Suva's Embrace: A Day of Exploration
Today, Suva welcomed us with open arms, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and culinary adventures. From tranquil gardens to bustling marketplaces, every corner of this city tells a story. As we continue our journey to reconnect with our Fijian heritage, days like these remind us of the simple joys and profound connections that make this island nation so special. It was a day of discovery, a day of connection, and a day that will forever be etched in our memories.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the renowned Hot Bread Kitchen. The aroma of freshly baked goods wafted through the air as we stepped inside, a comforting reminder of the bakeries back in Navua. I remember as a young boy, the smell of freshly baked bread always drew me in, and this place was no different. The family and I enjoyed some delicious meat pies and coconut buns, a perfect start to our Suva adventure. It's amazing how a simple meal can evoke such strong memories and a sense of belonging.

Fueled and ready, we made our way to Thurston Gardens, a green oasis in the heart of the city. As we strolled through the gardens, I couldn't help but marvel at the vibrant flora and the meticulously manicured lawns. Sailosi was particularly fascinated by the diverse collection of palm trees, each one seemingly reaching for the sky. Mere pointed out various medicinal plants, sharing stories passed down from her grandmother about their healing properties. It was a beautiful reminder of the traditional knowledge that has been preserved through generations.

The Fiji Museum, nestled within Thurston Gardens, was our next stop. The exhibits offered a captivating journey through Fiji's history, from its ancient origins to its colonial past and its journey to independence. I was particularly moved by the displays showcasing traditional Fijian artifacts, including intricately carved canoes and ceremonial weapons. It was a poignant reminder of the resilience and ingenuity of our ancestors. Sailosi was captivated by the exhibits on cannibalism, a practice that, while unsettling, is an important part of Fiji's complex history.

Exploring Suva is like peeling back layers of history and culture, each revealing a deeper understanding of what it means to be Fijian.

After immersing ourselves in history and nature, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to An Pho, a Vietnamese restaurant that had been recommended by a friend back in Vancouver. The restaurant was a welcome change of pace, offering a fusion of flavors that was both familiar and exotic. I opted for a steaming bowl of pho, while Mere savored the fresh spring rolls. Sailosi, ever the adventurous eater, tried the banh mi and declared it a new favorite. It was a delightful culinary experience that transported us to Southeast Asia without leaving Fiji.

With our bellies full, we decided to take a leisurely stroll along the Suva Sea Wall. The sea breeze was refreshing, and the views of the harbor were simply breathtaking. We watched as local fishermen cast their nets, their silhouettes against the setting sun creating a picturesque scene. The Sea Wall was bustling with activity, with families picnicking, joggers exercising, and couples enjoying a romantic evening walk. It was a vibrant snapshot of Suva's community life.

As we walked, we noticed the ongoing renovations to extend the Sea Wall, a testament to the city's commitment to protecting its coastline. I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of preserving our natural environment for future generations. It's a responsibility we all share, and it's heartening to see Suva taking proactive steps to address the challenges of climate change.

Before dinner, we stopped by Daulato Arts Fiji, a local shop showcasing Fijian handicrafts. I was immediately drawn to the intricate wood carvings and the vibrant paintings, each one telling a story of Fijian culture and heritage. Mere purchased a beautiful tapa cloth, while Sailosi picked out a small wooden carving of a turtle. It was a wonderful opportunity to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Fiji's artistic spirit.

For dinner, we decided to try Phoenix Bar & Restaurant, known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. The restaurant was buzzing with activity, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the evening. I ordered a traditional Fijian dish of Kokoda, while Mere opted for the grilled fish. Sailosi, predictably, went for the pizza. The food was excellent, and the service was warm and friendly. It was the perfect way to end our day in Suva.
