Sunday Serenity in Levuka
Today was a day of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and delicious food – a perfect blend that defines our family's Fijian adventure. From the refreshing cascade of Nabukavesi Waterfall, a serene natural wonder in Fiji perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers, to the communal spirit of Mago Kava Bar, we embraced the heart of Levuka. It’s days like these that remind me why we embarked on this journey to reconnect with our roots.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ivans Hot Bread Kitchen & Cafe. The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air, a comforting scent that reminded me of my own childhood in Navua. Mere and Sailosi were particularly excited about the coconut buns, a local favorite. I opted for a simple roti and curry, a classic Fijian breakfast that never disappoints. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of Levuka's culinary traditions. It's amazing how a simple meal can bring people together, bridging cultures and creating shared moments of joy. It was a great way to fuel up for our adventure to Nabukavesi Waterfall.
The drive to the waterfall was an experience in itself. The road wound through lush green hills, offering breathtaking views of the coastline. Sailosi was glued to the window, pointing out every cow and chicken we passed. As we neared the waterfall, the air grew cooler, and the sound of rushing water filled our ears. The anticipation was palpable. We parked the car and began our trek through the forest. The path was a bit muddy from the recent rain, but nothing our trusty walking shoes couldn't handle. I had forgotten insect repellent, though, a rookie error! Luckily, Mere had a small bottle in her bag.
Finally, we arrived at Nabukavesi Waterfall, and it was even more stunning than the pictures had suggested. The water cascaded down the rocks into a crystal-clear pool, surrounded by lush greenery. It felt like stepping into a hidden paradise. Sailosi was the first to jump in, his laughter echoing through the forest. Mere and I followed suit, braving the chilly water. It was incredibly refreshing, washing away the stresses of everyday life. We spent a good hour swimming and playing under the waterfall, feeling completely rejuvenated. It was a perfect family moment, one that I know we'll cherish for years to come.

After our refreshing swim, we hiked back to the car, our stomachs rumbling. It was time for lunch, and we had heard great things about The Grillenium Grub House. Located a short drive away, this eatery is known for its diverse menu, blending traditional Fijian dishes with international favorites. I decided to try the grilled fish, while Mere opted for the Kokoda, a traditional Fijian dish made with raw fish marinated in coconut cream and lime juice. Sailosi, of course, went for the classic fish and chips. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. The Grillenium Grub House definitely lived up to its reputation. It was a great spot to refuel after our waterfall adventure.

Back in town, we took a leisurely stroll through the historic streets of Levuka. The colonial architecture is truly captivating, a reminder of Fiji's rich history. We passed by the Heritage Guest House, a charming B&B that seemed to blend perfectly with the town's historic charm. We popped in to ask about availability, as it could be a good option for future trips with friends or family. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the guest house exuded a sense of tranquility. It's definitely on our list for future stays.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Mago Kava Bar. I was eager to experience a traditional kava ceremony, something I hadn't done since I was a young boy in Navua. Mere and Sailosi were a bit hesitant, but I assured them it was a must-do in Fiji. The bar was buzzing with locals, all gathered to share stories and laughter over a bowl of kava. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and we were quickly welcomed into the fold. I explained to Sailosi the cultural significance of kava, how it's a symbol of unity and respect in Fijian society.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.”
The kava itself had a slightly earthy taste, a bit different from what I remembered, but still enjoyable. We shared a few bowls with the locals, listening to their stories and learning about their lives. It was a truly immersive experience, one that connected us to the heart of Fijian culture. Sailosi even tried a small sip, his face scrunching up in a mix of curiosity and mild distaste. Mere, on the other hand, politely declined, opting for a glass of water instead. I remember when Mere and I first met at a Fijian community event back in Vancouver. We bonded over our shared heritage and dreams of one day returning to Fiji. Now, here we are, living that dream.
As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to our relatives' home, our hearts full of gratitude for the day's experiences. It was a Sunday well spent, a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and family bonding. These are the moments that make our Fijian journey so special, the memories that we'll carry with us long after we return to Vancouver.
Tomorrow, we're planning a trip to Suva. We’ll be visiting Thurston Gardens and the Suva Sea Wall, hoping to soak in more of Fiji's urban beauty. We're also planning to grab a bite at Hot Bread Kitchen for breakfast, An Pho for lunch, and Phoenix Bar & Restaurant for dinner. And of course, a little shopping at Daulato Arts Fiji. Looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery!
