A Day of Discovery in Levuka

Today was a day of diving deep into Levuka's historical heart, a journey that brought me closer to understanding my Fijian heritage. Walking through this UNESCO World Heritage site with my family, I felt a profound connection to the stories etched into its streets and buildings. It was a day of simple pleasures, cultural immersion, and heartfelt moments that I'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Getaway Fastfood and Coffee Shop. It's a local favorite, and I could see why. The coffee was strong, just how I like it, and the Fijian-style pastries gave us a delicious start to our explorations. It's these small, local experiences that really make a trip memorable.

Levuka Public School: A Glimpse into Fiji's Educational Past

Our first stop was the Levuka Public School. Established in 1879, it holds the distinction of being the first public school in Fiji. Standing before its historic buildings, I couldn't help but imagine the generations of Fijian leaders who walked these halls, shaping the future of our nation. The school's architecture, a blend of colonial and Fijian styles, is a testament to Levuka's unique history. Sailosi was particularly intrigued by the old photographs and stories the caretaker shared about the school's past. It’s amazing to think that this school, which started with just 58 students, has played such a pivotal role in Fiji's education system.

Honoring Ratu Sukuna: A Monument of Leadership

Next, we visited the Ratu Sukuna Monument. Although the most well known Ratu Sukuna Monument is in Suva, I was happy to find one here in Levuka. Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna was a towering figure in Fijian history, a statesman, scholar, and soldier who dedicated his life to the betterment of Fiji. Standing before the monument, I felt a surge of pride and gratitude for his contributions. The monument itself is a simple yet powerful tribute, set against the backdrop of Levuka's serene landscape. I took the time to explain to Sailosi the significance of Ratu Sukuna's legacy, emphasizing his role in preserving Fijian land rights and promoting education. It's important for the younger generation to understand and appreciate the sacrifices and achievements of our leaders.

Sweet Laisa's Kitchen: A Taste of Home

For lunch, we headed to Sweet Laisa's Kitchen. This place is a gem! The aroma of traditional Fijian dishes filled the air as we stepped inside. We ordered a variety of dishes, from Kokoda (Fijian ceviche) to Lovo (food cooked in an underground oven). Each dish was bursting with flavor and reminded me of the meals my grandmother used to make back in Navua. Mere and Sailosi particularly enjoyed the Kokoda, while I savored the smoky taste of the Lovo. It was a true taste of home, a culinary journey that connected us to our roots. I even managed to get Laisa to share a few cooking tips, which I'm eager to try out back in Vancouver.

Retail Therapy at Treehouse Boutique

After lunch, we decided to do a little shopping at Treehouse Boutique. I had heard great things about this place, and it didn't disappoint. The boutique is a treasure trove of Fijian crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. Mere found a beautiful hand-printed sulu (Fijian sarong), while Sailosi picked out a carved wooden war club. I couldn't resist buying a few small trinkets for my friends back in Vancouver. It's always nice to bring back a piece of Fiji to share with those who couldn't make the trip. The owner of the boutique was incredibly friendly and shared stories about the local artisans who created the items. It's these personal connections that make shopping in Levuka so special.

The Hideout Restaurant and Bar: A Relaxing End to the Day

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Hideout Restaurant and Bar for dinner. This place is known for its stunning views of the ocean and its delicious seafood. We sat on the outdoor deck, enjoying the cool breeze and the sound of the waves. The seafood platter was a feast for the senses, with fresh fish, prawns, and lobster grilled to perfection. Sailosi, who usually isn't a fan of seafood, surprised us all by devouring the prawns. The Hideout is the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. As I sipped my Fiji Bitter, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with my family.
