Explore Naoshima's Art House Project, savor local flavors, and find tranquility in Honmura. A day of art, food, and reflection.
Honmura's Hidden Treasures
Today was a day of wandering through Honmura, the charming village on Naoshima Island, and it felt like stepping into a world where art and daily life intertwine. It's amazing how much creativity and history can be found tucked away in this corner of the island. After three days of exploring, it felt good to slow down and enjoy a more relaxed pace.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at APRON CAFE. Finding it was a mini-adventure in itself, tucked away in one of Honmura's narrow pedestrian alleyways. The cafe's black wood facade, designed by Abake Studio, was easy to spot. The cafe was buzzing with a mix of locals and tourists, all eager to start their day with a good meal. I opted for the seasonal special lunch set, a vibrant plate of locally sourced ingredients that not only tasted amazing but was also a feast for the eyes. I made sure to take my time, savouring each bite and enjoying the cozy atmosphere.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the Art House Project. This initiative, which transforms abandoned houses and buildings into art installations, is scattered throughout the Honmura district. My first stop was Kadoya, the first house transformed as part of the project. Inside, Tatsuo Miyajima's Sea of Time '98 was mesmerizing. The LED counters submerged in water, each counting at different speeds, created a sense of the unique passage of time, especially poignant as the counters were set by island residents of all ages. It was a truly immersive experience.

Art isn't just something you look at; it's something that changes how you see the world.
Next on the list was the iconic Red Pumpkin, greeting visitors near the Miyanoura Port. I had seen photos of it, but nothing prepared me for the actual experience of standing before Yayoi Kusama's creation. The contrast of the red pumpkin against the backdrop of the blue sea was striking. I even ventured inside, peering out through the polka-dot openings, feeling like I was part of the artwork itself. It's a playful and thought-provoking piece that perfectly captures the spirit of Naoshima.

Lunch was at Ebisukamo, a delightful Japanese restaurant known for its fresh, seasonal ingredients. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the menu showcased a variety of traditional dishes prepared with care and artistry. I decided on the sashimi set, and the seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant had a tranquil vibe, with soft lighting and tasteful decor that made it the perfect spot to relax and recharge.

After lunch, I made my way to the Walking Ark, nestled in the picturesque town of Ogicho. This open-air museum features a collection of sculptures and artistic exhibits integrated into the natural landscape. Walking through the curated paths, I was struck by how art and nature intertwined, creating a serene and inspirational environment. The sculptures often reflected themes of community and culture, sparking contemplation and offering visual delight. The Walking Ark provided a peaceful retreat, and I spent a good hour wandering around.

As the afternoon waned, I found myself at Kon'nichiwa, a charming cafe near Honmura Port. It had a rustic, welcoming vibe. After taking off my shoes at the entrance, as is customary, I rang the bell and called out Kon'nichiwa! I settled into a cozy spot with tatami mats and enjoyed a cup of coffee, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to unwind.

For dinner, I returned to Aisunao, a restaurant I had been wanting to try since arriving on Naoshima. Aisunao is known for its flavorful dishes featuring organically grown rice and vegetables. The restaurant is in a converted traditional house, easily recognized by the blue entrance curtain with a cute rice bowl design. The vegan options were plentiful, and I enjoyed a delicious and healthy meal, savoring the flavors of the island.

I enjoyed a local beer, chatting with some fellow travelers and soaking in the laid-back atmosphere. It was a great way to end the day.
