Day 5: Art and Industry Collide: Discovering Hidden Gems in Naoshima's Miyanoura District
Explore Naoshima's Miyanoura district, where art installations blend seamlessly with the island's industrial heritage and local culture.
Naoshima's Unexpected Charms
Another day, another adventure unfolding on this captivating art island! Today, I decided to delve deeper into the Miyanoura district, eager to uncover more of Naoshima's unique blend of art and local life. It's amazing how art is woven into the very fabric of this island, and I was excited to see what hidden gems I could find.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Yuunagi. Located near the port, it was the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of exploring. I opted for their famous flounder set meal, a local delicacy that was absolutely delicious. I must admit, as someone who grew up on seafood in Fiji, I have high standards, and Yuunagi did not disappoint! The flounder was cooked to perfection, and the set meal came with a variety of traditional Japanese sides that were equally delightful.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore the Shipyard Works by Shinro Otake. The integration of art with the island's industrial past is truly remarkable. It's fascinating how Otake has repurposed elements of the shipyard, transforming them into striking works of art. As I wandered through the exhibit, I couldn't help but reflect on how art can breathe new life into forgotten spaces, giving them a new narrative and purpose.

Art has the power to transform the mundane into the extraordinary, offering new perspectives and challenging our perceptions of the world around us.
Next on my list was the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This park is a serene retreat where art and nature intertwine harmoniously. The installations and sculptures are thoughtfully placed within the landscape, inviting contemplation and connection. I spent some time simply wandering through the pathways, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the gentle breeze. It was a welcome escape from the summer heat and a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

For lunch, I ventured to Okonomiyaki Umikko, a charming family-run restaurant known for its savory pancakes. The okonomiyaki was cooked right in front of me, and I could customize it with various toppings. I went for the Umikko Special, which was a delightful mix of seafood, vegetables, and meat. The owners were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt like I was dining in someone's home, which added to the authenticity of the experience. Mere would have loved this place, I thought to myself, she always appreciates a good, hearty meal.

After lunch, I made my way to Miyanoura Gallery 6. This gallery is housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, a former amusement arcade that was once a popular gathering place for locals. Architect Taira Nishizawa has transformed the space into a modern art gallery while preserving elements of its past. The juxtaposition of the old and the new creates a unique and thought-provoking environment. The gallery features works that change with the seasons, offering a fresh perspective each time you visit. It was a great reminder of how art can repurpose and revitalize spaces, blending the past with the present.

Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at Shimacoya, a unique café and variety store. This place is a hidden gem, offering a blend of art, literature, and local crafts. I browsed through the used books, sipped on a refreshing coffee, and picked up a few souvenirs to take back home. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, surrounded by creativity and inspiration. I even found a book on Fijian legends, a little piece of home to bring back to Vancouver.

As evening approached, I headed to Nagomi for dinner. Located in the town's welfare center, this restaurant offers a taste of community and local flavors. I opted for one of their set meals, which featured fresh, seasonal ingredients prepared in traditional styles. The communal canteen-like environment made it easy to connect with locals, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the residents over dinner. It was a reminder of the importance of community and the power of food to bring people together. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes for Sailosi, who always enjoys trying new foods.

From the Shipyard Works to Miyanoura Gallery 6, each attraction tells a story of transformation and renewal. And the local restaurants and shops provide a glimpse into the heart and soul of Naoshima.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Honmura district and the Art House Project. I'm excited to see how artists have transformed abandoned houses into unique art spaces, blending traditional architecture with contemporary art. I might even check out Cin.na.mon bar for a nightcap. It's going to be another day of discovery and inspiration, and I can't wait to share it with you all!
