A Day of Artistic Immersion

Today was a day of wandering, of letting the art and the island guide me. It’s funny how a place can seep into your soul, leaving you feeling both grounded and uplifted. Naoshima has that effect, a quiet power that resonates long after you’ve left its shores. I can already tell that this solo trip is exactly what I needed to recharge and reflect.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. It’s a cozy spot, the kind of place where you feel instantly welcomed. The aroma of freshly brewed Japanese coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of traditional snacks. I savored every bite, watching as locals and tourists alike gathered to start their day. It reminded me of the small coffee shop back in Navua, Fiji, where everyone knows your name and a friendly chat is always on the menu. It's the simple things, really, that make a place feel like home, no matter where you are in the world.

Fueled up and ready to explore, I decided to head towards Tsunosaki. The walk itself was a journey, with the island's natural beauty unfolding at every turn. The coastal views were breathtaking, the Seto Inland Sea shimmering under the morning sun. I could have spent hours simply sitting there, sketchbook in hand, trying to capture the essence of the scene. As I wandered, I thought about Mere and Sailosi back home. I imagined Mere would love the tranquility of this place, a perfect escape from her busy days at the hospital. Sailosi, on the other hand, would probably be more interested in climbing the rocks and exploring the hidden coves. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this little slice of paradise with my family.

Art doesn't transform. It just plain forms.

After soaking in the coastal views, it was time for a change of pace. I ventured to the Art House Project: Haisha, the former dentist's residence transformed into an art space. It was an experience that challenged my perceptions and sparked my imagination. The eclectic mix of styles, from paintings to collages, created a dreamlike atmosphere. The replica of the Statue of Liberty inside was unexpected, a quirky touch that made me smile. It was a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places, and that sometimes, the most profound experiences come from stepping outside your comfort zone. The transformation of a mundane space into something extraordinary resonated deeply with me. In my work as a Community Engagement Coordinator, I often see how spaces can be repurposed and reimagined to serve the community in new and innovative ways. This project was a testament to the power of creativity and the potential for art to transform lives.

Lunch was at NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda, a charming eatery known for its fresh seafood. I opted for the grilled fish set meal, a delicious assortment of local delicacies. The fish was cooked to perfection, the flavors enhanced by the simple yet skillful preparation. It was a culinary experience that celebrated the island's bounty and the chef's dedication to preserving traditional Japanese cuisine. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to taste the authentic flavors of Naoshima. It reminded me of the seafood feasts back in Fiji, where the ocean's treasures are celebrated with every meal.

In the afternoon, I decided to embrace the local culture and partake in a traditional tea ceremony. It was a serene and meditative experience, a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty of the moment. The gentle movements of the tea master, the delicate flavors of the matcha, and the quiet contemplation of the surroundings created a sense of harmony and peace. It was a reminder to be present, to savor the small joys in life, and to find beauty in simplicity. I reflected on my life back in Vancouver, the hustle and bustle of city living, and the constant demands on my time and energy. This tea ceremony was a gentle nudge to prioritize mindfulness and to seek moments of stillness amidst the chaos.

As the sun began to set, I found myself drawn to Cin.na.mon, a cozy bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and creative cocktails. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I sipped on a local craft beer, chatting with fellow travelers and locals alike. The conversations were easy and engaging, a testament to the welcoming spirit of Naoshima. The bar had a funky ambiance, with traditional tatami rooms adding to its charm. As I sat there, surrounded by the warmth of good company and the gentle murmur of conversation, I felt a sense of belonging, a connection to this island and its people. It reminded me of the kava ceremonies back in Fiji, where storytelling and shared experiences create a sense of community and connection.

For dinner, I treated myself to sushi at New Olympia. It was a culinary masterpiece, each piece of sushi a work of art in itself. The freshness of the fish, the precision of the knife work, and the artistry of the presentation were all testament to the chef's skill and dedication. It was a dining experience that engaged all my senses, a celebration of Japanese culinary traditions. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such exquisite cuisine. It was a reminder that food is not just sustenance, but a form of art, a way to connect with culture and tradition.
