Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 7: Naoshima's Hidden Gems: Serenity and Surprises
Discover Naoshima's serene side: Danyama views, Honmura's art, Yokobou Park's tranquility, and local flavors. A perfect solo escape.
A Day of Discoveries Beyond the Art
Today was about peeling back another layer of Naoshima, venturing beyond the celebrated museums and installations to find the island's quieter, more personal corners. It’s easy to get caught up in the big names and iconic artworks, but I wanted to experience the island's soul, the places where art and everyday life intertwine. I was eager to explore the island’s natural beauty and local culture, and today was the perfect opportunity to do just that.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE in Honmura. Finding it was a little adventure in itself, tucked away in one of the narrow pedestrian alleyways. The cafe is located in a renovated traditional Japanese house, and the atmosphere was incredibly cozy and inviting. I ordered their seasonal breakfast set, which featured local Setouchi ingredients. It was delicious and nutritious, the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I must admit, I had seconds of their 'Happy Scones'. It was a real treat to start the day with such a wholesome meal.

The owner, Maki, was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the cafe's connection to local artists and designers. It felt like a true community hub, a place where creativity and good food come together. Turns out that APRON CAFE is known for using seasonal ingredients sourced locally. I am a big supporter of any establishment that supports local farmers and suppliers.
From APRON CAFE, I decided to hike up to Danyama. The walk itself was a treat, winding through quiet residential streets and offering glimpses of the sea. As I climbed higher, the panoramic views began to unfold, and the Seto Inland Sea sparkled in the morning sun. The hike was quite manageable, even in the summer heat, and the reward at the top was well worth the effort. It was so peaceful, and I could see for miles in every direction. Danyama offers a breathtaking 360-degree vista, showcasing the islands scattered across the Inland Sea.

The true essence of travel lies not just in seeing new sights, but in discovering new perspectives.
Reaching the summit, I was struck by the simplicity and beauty of the landscape. Teshima, another art island, was visible in the distance. Knowing that Danyama's spring water irrigates Teshima's fields added another layer of appreciation. I took some time to sketch in my notebook, capturing the scene's tranquility. I really enjoyed the hike to Danyama. It was a great way to stretch my legs and immerse myself in the natural beauty of the island. The views from the top were simply stunning.
Next on my list was the Honmura Lounge & Archive. Housed in a renovated agricultural cooperative supermarket, the lounge was designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa, preserving much of the original structure. It was a great place to relax, browse local crafts, and learn more about the Art House Project. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing information about the various art sites and offering insights into the island's history. This lounge serves as a hub for the Art House Project, offering tickets and information. It's fascinating how this space has been transformed from a supermarket into a cultural center.

I spent some time exploring the Honmura district, wandering through its narrow streets and admiring the traditional Japanese houses. It’s a stark contrast to the modern art installations, but that’s what makes Naoshima so unique. The blend of old and new, traditional and contemporary, creates a captivating atmosphere. It was fascinating to see how the Art House Project integrates art into these everyday spaces, turning entire houses into works of art. It really blurs the line between art and life.
For lunch, I stopped at maimai, a charming cafe known for its gourmet hamburgers. I opted for the Naoshima Burger, which featured a crispy fried local fish and a generous helping of vegetables. It was delicious and satisfying, the perfect mid-day meal. I was really impressed with the quality of the ingredients. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. Maimai is known for its Naoshima burger, which features local fish. It was a delicious and satisfying meal.

The cafe itself was adorned with artistic touches, reflecting the island’s vibrant culture. The cozy ambiance made it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the surroundings. It’s a popular spot among both locals and tourists, and I can see why. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s an experience.
In the afternoon, I made my way to Yokobou Park. This park offered a serene retreat, with lush greenery and peaceful walking paths. It was a welcome escape from the summer heat, a place to unwind and reconnect with nature. The park is beautifully maintained, and the atmosphere is incredibly calming. It’s a perfect spot for meditation or simply enjoying the tranquility of the island.

As I strolled through the park, I came across a small group of locals practicing traditional Japanese dance. I stopped to watch for a while, captivated by their graceful movements and the rhythmic music. It was a beautiful reminder of the island’s rich cultural heritage. Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I stopped by Kobata, a local shop known for its artisanal ice cream. I decided to try their rum raisin flavor, which was absolutely divine. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring. I enjoyed my ice cream while watching the sunset, reflecting on the day’s adventures. Kobata is known for its handmade ice cream and offers a variety of unique flavors.

Today was a reminder that Naoshima is more than just an art island; it’s a place with a vibrant culture, stunning natural beauty, and a warm, welcoming community. I'm starting to feel quite at home here on Naoshima. Tomorrow, I’m planning to explore Kasaneiwa, Naoshima Fishing Park, and Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. I am looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and experiencing the island’s diverse offerings.
As I walked back, the sky was ablaze with color, the setting sun painting the sea in hues of orange and pink. The air was filled with the sounds of cicadas, a soothing soundtrack to the end of another perfect day. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique island and to share my journey with you.
Tomorrow I plan to continue my exploration, visiting Kasaneiwa, Naoshima Fishing Park, and perhaps trying my luck at catching Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at EAT LOCAL 直島食堂, lunch at Terrace Restaurant, and dinner at Yayoda. And of course, a stop at Mikazukishoten for some local crafts.
Until then, sayonara from Naoshima!
