Finding Peace in the Unexpected Corners of Naoshima

Today was a day of quiet exploration, a chance to step away from the more crowded art installations and discover the subtle beauty that Naoshima holds. It's easy to get caught up in the big museums and famous artworks, but sometimes the most rewarding experiences come from wandering off the beaten path. Today, I embraced that spirit of adventure, and Naoshima delivered in ways I hadn't anticipated.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at EAT LOCAL 直島食堂. While I love trying new things, I couldn't resist ordering the grilled fish set again. There’s something so comforting about the simple, fresh flavors that sets me up perfectly for the day. After breakfast, I decided to head towards Kasaneiwa. The walk there was peaceful, a gentle uphill climb that offered glimpses of the Seto Inland Sea through the trees. It reminded me of the hikes back home in Fiji, where the ocean is always a constant presence.

Kasaneiwa itself was quite striking. These precariously balanced rocks have an almost mystical quality. Standing there, looking out at the sea, I couldn't help but wonder about the forces that put them there and the stories they hold. It’s amazing to think that these stones may have been used to build Osaka Castle.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of observation and reflection.

Next on my list was the Naoshima Fishing Park. Now, I’m not much of a fisherman myself, but I was drawn to the idea of spending some time by the water. I rented a bicycle – a much better choice than walking in this heat – and cycled over to the park. The park was surprisingly tranquil. Families were enjoying picnics, and a few serious anglers were casting their lines. I decided to simply sit by the water, enjoying the gentle breeze and watching the boats go by. It was a welcome change of pace, a chance to simply be present in the moment. I even treated myself to a salt soda pop from the shop, Mikazukishoten; the sweetness and saltiness was a surprisingly refreshing combination.

For lunch, I opted for the Terrace Restaurant. The views were, as the name suggests, fantastic. I enjoyed a light meal of seafood pasta while gazing out at the sparkling sea. It was the perfect spot to recharge before my next adventure.

In the late afternoon, I decided to visit Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno. While technically not *on* Naoshima, it’s a short ferry ride away and I had heard so much about it. The sculptures, made from recycled materials, were truly impressive. It's amazing how the artist transformed what would otherwise be trash into something so beautiful and thought-provoking. It reminded me of the importance of environmental conservation, a cause that's close to my heart. I was particularly struck by the intricate details and the clever use of everyday objects like umbrellas.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Naoshima. For dinner, I chose Yayoda. I wanted something comforting and familiar, and their traditional Japanese dishes hit the spot. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's experiences.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower for panoramic views and explore Les Archives du Cœur and La forêt des murmures. I’m particularly intrigued by the idea of listening to heartbeats from around the world. But for tonight, I'm content to simply relax and enjoy the peace of Naoshima. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, a chance to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with myself and the world around me.

Naoshima continues to surprise me. It's not just about the art; it's about the atmosphere, the people, and the unexpected discoveries that await around every corner. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, to appreciate the simple things, and to find beauty in the most unexpected places. Vinaka vakalevu, Naoshima, for another day of unforgettable experiences. This solo trip is exactly what I needed to recharge and find new perspectives.

I am really looking forward to what tomorrow brings!
