Discover the beauty of Pelion with a scenic train ride and charming coastal village explorations. A perfect day of Greek delights.
All Aboard and Seaside Delights
Today was a delightful mix of picturesque coastal scenery and a nostalgic trip back in time aboard a vintage train. The kind of day that reminds me why I started this blog – to capture and share these simple yet profound travel experiences. It's days like these that make me appreciate the beauty of Pelion and the joy of exploring with friends.
Our day began in Portaria, where we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at Me Mostra. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the taste of local pastries set the perfect tone for the day. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the village of Manolas.

Manolas is a coastal gem that really took my breath away. The village itself is charming, but the real draw is the waterfront. We strolled along the harbor, watching the local fishermen bring in their daily catch. The vibrant colors of the boats bobbing in the azure water were a sight to behold. It felt like stepping back in time, a feeling I always cherish when discovering places like this. We spent a good hour just wandering, soaking in the atmosphere and snapping photos. I couldn't resist picking up a few nautical-themed souvenirs from a local shop – perfect mementos of our seaside adventure. I can already picture Lena displaying them in our Berlin apartment.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
Next on our agenda was the legendary Little Train of Pelion, also known as “Moutzouris”. To get to the train, we had to make our way towards Ano Lechonia. The route itself was something to marvel at, as we drove through lush greenery and traditional settlements. The train operates on a narrow-gauge railway, initially constructed to connect Volos with Milies. The train journey was a unique experience, chugging along the mountainous route, offering breathtaking views of the Pelion landscape. The train itself is a vintage marvel, and it felt like stepping back in time as we boarded. Sofia would have absolutely loved this experience!

The train journey included a brief stop at Ano Gatzea, where we had the chance to stretch our legs and explore a bit. The scenery along the way was stunning, with lush vegetation and picturesque views that stretched out as far as the eye could see. The combination of the vintage train and the natural beauty of Pelion made it a memorable experience. The railway itself sometimes doubles as a road, which was quite a unique sight.
After our railway adventure, it was time for a late lunch. We headed to Tavern Pelion Geuseis Portaria, a local favorite known for its traditional Greek cuisine. The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We indulged in a variety of local dishes, including succulent grilled meats, fresh seafood, and flavorful meze plates. Everything was prepared with locally sourced ingredients, giving us a genuine taste of the region. The lamb and pork dishes were particularly memorable.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to do some shopping. Apéritto in Portaria caught our eye – a charming gift shop brimming with local art and culture. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that I know Lena will adore. The shop assistant was incredibly helpful, sharing stories about the local artisans and the history behind the crafts. It’s these personal touches that make shopping in Pelion so special.

For dinner, we chose Pagasitikos Restaurant, located in Kala Nera. This family-run taverna has been around since 1934, and it’s clear why it’s so beloved. The restaurant is right next to the sea, offering stunning views as we dined. We savored a variety of local specialties, including barbequed meats and seafood. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, making it the perfect end to a busy day.

As the sun began to set, we reflected on our experiences. Pelion continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I'm looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit View point portaria and the Pelion Ski Centre. It will be interesting to see the landscape from a different vantage point, and I'm curious to explore the ski center even in the summer months. And of course, we'll be trying out some more local restaurants, including Anemolia for breakfast and To Kima • Seaside Family Restaurant for dinner. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of Pelion adventures.
