Exploring the Hidden Gems of Pelion with Friends
Day 3: A Journey Through Time and Taste: Pelion's Charms Unveiled
Experience Pelion's scenic train, the peaceful Sycamore Square, and delightful Greek cuisine. A day filled with history, nature, and culinary delights.
Riding Rails and Finding Peace in Pelion
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the rhythmic chug of a historic train with the serene stillness of a centuries-old sycamore tree. It’s funny how travel can surprise you; sometimes the most profound experiences are the ones you least expect. Today was a reminder to slow down, appreciate the journey, and savor every moment, especially when shared with good company.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pelion Plaza Εστιατόριο. I went for the local specialty, a savory pie filled with greens and feta. Fuelled up, we were ready for our adventure on the Train of Pilio.

The Train of Pilio, or Moutzouris as the locals affectionately call it, promised a scenic journey through the heart of Pelion, and it didn't disappoint. As the little train chugged along, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. The views were incredible, a tapestry of olive groves, chestnut forests, and stone bridges. Sofia was absolutely thrilled, her face pressed against the window, pointing out every goat and sheep we passed. Even Lena, who usually prefers modern conveniences, was captivated by the old-world charm of the train.
The journey from Ano Lechonia to Milies took about 90 minutes, with a brief stop in Ano Gatzea. It was a chance to stretch our legs, grab a quick coffee, and admire the vintage locomotive. The Pelion peninsula is a hidden gem, and I feel lucky to experience it with my family and friends. The train itself is a masterpiece of engineering, and it travels through some of the narrowest railway lines in the world.
Sometimes, the best journeys are those that take you back in time, allowing you to appreciate the simple beauty of a bygone era.
Arriving in Milies, we followed a cobbled path to the central square. It was time for lunch, and cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO in Makrinitsa was calling our names. The reviews were stellar, and I was eager to try their traditional Greek dishes. After a scenic drive through winding mountain roads, we arrived in Makrinitsa, known as the balcony of Pelion. The village is perched on the mountainside, offering breathtaking views of the Pagasetic Gulf.

Cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO lived up to its reputation. We started with a selection of mezes, including the recommended beef cheek with orzo, and hilopites with beef and mushroom. The service was fast, and the staff were incredibly kind. Lena was particularly impressed with the mushrooms and halloumi cheese with tomato marmalade. Sofia, surprisingly, devoured the veal, while I savored every bite of the oven-cooked goat in lemon sauce. The food was delicious, and the view from our table was simply breathtaking.
After lunch, we strolled through the village, eventually arriving at the Sycamore of Peace Square. The square is home to a massive sycamore tree, its branches providing shade and a sense of tranquility. According to Dandy Villas Tsagkarada Green Apple Complex, the sycamore trunk is enough to leave you in awe. We spent some time relaxing under the tree, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Sofia chased pigeons, while Lena and I admired the traditional stone architecture of Makrinitsa. The Sycamore of Peace Square is a testament to the region's rich history and cultural heritage. The village itself is known for its traditional buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and stunning views of the Pagasetic Gulf. The Sycamore of Peace Square acts as a focal point, drawing you into the heart of the community.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back down the mountain, our hearts full of the day's experiences. It was time for dinner, and 1701 Wine Restaurant in Volos was our destination. I was intrigued by the restaurant's fusion of Spanish and Afro-Caribbean cuisine. The restaurant specializes in gourmet Sunday all-inclusive brunch, tasting memberships, social gatherings, and special events. The seasonal menus feature organic produce and sustainable proteins.

1701 Wine Restaurant offered a unique culinary experience. We started with some tapas, including the spicy chicken chorizo wrapped in masa meal. For our main courses, Lena chose the charred romaine, while I opted for the hot honey chicken. The food was flavorful, and the wine pairings were spot on. The atmosphere was lively, and the service was attentive.
To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Red Nose Bar in Volos. The bar is known for its exceptional cocktails and cozy atmosphere. Red Nose Bar is a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists alike. As a versatile venue, this establishment seamlessly combines the charm of a cocktail bar with the warmth of a café and the laid-back ambiance of a brunch restaurant. The bar is located in a stone neoclassical building in the green, inner courtyard of the space. The friendly staff is known for their exceptional service and personalized recommendations.
