Chasing Curves and Capturing Culture in Dades Valley

The Moroccan sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink as I set out for another day of exploration in the Dades Valley. After two days of soaking in the sights, I was excited to see what new adventures this stunning landscape held. Today's itinerary promised a mix of natural wonders and local encounters, a perfect blend for a curious traveler like myself.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Achaf. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in the valley. Over a steaming cup of traditional mint tea and some freshly baked bread, I planned my route. First up: the famous Tisderine bends.

As I drove, the landscape transformed into a dramatic canvas of reds and oranges. The road snaked its way through the valley, following the path carved by the Dades River over millennia. It wasn't long before I reached the viewpoint overlooking the Tisderine bends. I parked the car and stepped out, camera in hand, ready to capture the scene. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. The road, a ribbon of asphalt, twisted and turned in a series of hairpin bends, creating a mesmerizing pattern against the backdrop of the rugged mountains.

I spent a good hour at the viewpoint, snapping photos and simply soaking in the beauty. The sun climbed higher, casting long shadows across the valley. It was a photographer's dream, and I felt grateful to be there, witnessing such a stunning display of nature's artistry. The air was clean and crisp, carrying the scent of wildflowers and distant villages. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of why I traded my Berlin office for this solo adventure.

Driving down the bends was an experience in itself. Each turn offered a new perspective, a different angle on the landscape. I could see why they called it the 'Snake Road'. The road demanded focus and precision, but the views were well worth the effort. I pulled over at several spots along the way, just to take it all in. Local kids waved as I passed, their smiles as warm as the desert sun.

My next stop was Kefroun, also known as the Turtle's Back. This unique rock formation, resembling a turtle's shell, was another highlight of the Dades Valley. The drive to Kefroun took me through more of the valley's stunning scenery. I passed small Berber villages, their mud-brick houses blending seamlessly into the landscape. I even spotted a few shepherds tending to their flocks, their silhouettes stark against the hillsides.

Reaching Kefroun, I parked and took a short walk to get a better view. The rock formation was indeed remarkable, a testament to the geological forces that shaped this region over millions of years. I climbed a small hill nearby, which gave me a panoramic view of the valley. From there, I could see the winding Dades River, the patchwork of fields, and the distant peaks of the Atlas Mountains.

The beauty of the Dades Valley lies not just in its landscapes, but in the way it slows you down, inviting you to connect with nature and the simple rhythms of life.

By now, I was starting to feel peckish, so I decided to head to Auberge Restaurant Oued Dades for lunch. This charming auberge, nestled in the heart of the valley, offered a welcome respite from the sun. I sat on the terrace, overlooking a lush garden, and ordered a traditional tagine. The flavors were incredible – a mix of sweet and savory, with tender meat and fragrant spices. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventures.

After lunch, I felt a desire to explore the local culture. I decided to visit ORINO SHOP, a local shop in the area. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Lena and Sofia. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from handwoven carpets to intricate jewelry. I spent some time browsing, chatting with the owner about the history of the crafts and the traditions of the Dades Valley. I finally settled on a beautiful Berber rug for our living room in Berlin and a small silver bracelet for Sofia.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Kasbah Planète Bleue Dades for dinner. This kasbah-turned-restaurant offered a truly authentic Moroccan dining experience. The ambiance was magical, with traditional music and candlelight creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I savored a delicious meal of couscous and grilled meats, accompanied by local wine. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day’s adventures, I realized how much I had seen and experienced. From the dramatic curves of the Tisderine bends to the unique rock formations of Kefroun, the Dades Valley had revealed its natural beauty. And beyond the landscapes, I had also connected with the local culture, through the food, the crafts, and the people.

As I drove back to my guesthouse, the stars began to appear in the night sky. The air was cool and still, carrying the distant sound of drums from a nearby village. I felt a sense of peace and contentment. This solo journey was turning out to be everything I had hoped for – a chance to escape the ordinary, to discover new places, and to connect with myself.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Chemin du Canyon and the Gorges Dadés. I’ve heard that the hiking there is incredible, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the valley’s stunning landscapes. I might even stop by CAFÉ RESTAURANT GROTTE DADES for a drink, if I have time. Until then, I’ll rest up and dream of the adventures to come. Goodnight from Dades Valley!
