Family Adventure in the Blue Pearl of Morocco
Day 8: Farewell to the Blue Pearl: Reflecting on Our Family's Moroccan Journey
Saying goodbye to Chefchaouen, reminiscing about blue streets, kasbah explorations, and delicious Moroccan meals during our family adventure.
A Fond Farewell to Chefchaouen
As our family adventure in Chefchaouen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared in this mesmerizing blue city. From the enchanting streets to the warm hospitality of the locals, Chefchaouen has captured a special place in our hearts. It’s hard to believe our eight-day journey is already at its end, but the memories we’ve created here will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Our final day began, as many others did, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Chourafa. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air as we enjoyed our meal, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the past week. Sofia, of course, couldn't stop talking about the friendly cats she'd met throughout the Medina. Lena and I savored the last tastes of Moroccan hospitality, knowing we'd soon be trading it for the familiar comforts of our Berlin apartment.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set out to explore the Kasbah. This historic fortress, situated in the heart of Chefchaouen, offered a glimpse into the city's rich past. We wandered through its Andalusian-style garden, admiring the lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere. The Kasbah Museum provided fascinating insights into Chefchaouen's cultural heritage, with exhibits showcasing ancient weapons, historical photographs, and traditional textiles. Sofia was particularly intrigued by the displays of old weaponry, imagining herself as a brave warrior defending the city.

Travel is not reward for working, it's education for living.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. As the oldest mosque in the city, it holds significant religious and historical importance. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, we admired its architecture from the outside, taking in the unique octagonal minaret that distinguishes it from other mosques in Morocco. The mosque's history dates back to the 15th century, shortly after the city's founding, and it has served as a central place of worship and community gathering for centuries.

After soaking in the historical sights, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Jabir Shop Chefchaouen. This charming gift shop is known for its collection of handmade Moroccan crafts, including pottery, textiles, and local art. We spent a delightful hour browsing the shop's wares, chatting with the friendly owner, and admiring the intricate craftsmanship. Lena picked up a beautiful handwoven blanket to remind us of our time in the Rif Mountains, while Sofia chose a colorful ceramic bowl for her collection.

Lunchtime found us at Restaurant Paloma, a local favorite known for its delicious Moroccan and French cuisine. We savored a flavorful tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and indulged in a refreshing glass of mint tea. The restaurant's relaxed atmosphere and charming decor made for a perfect midday break. Sofia surprised us all by devouring a whole plate of couscous, a testament to her growing appreciation for Moroccan flavors.

As the afternoon wore on, we strolled through the blue-washed streets of the Medina one last time. The city's unique charm never ceased to captivate us, with its vibrant colors, winding alleyways, and friendly locals. We paused to admire the intricate tilework, the colorful doorways, and the cascading bougainvillea that adorned many of the buildings. Sofia, ever the curious explorer, insisted on leading us down every hidden passageway, eager to discover new treasures.
For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Restaurant Dar El Salam. This charming eatery is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. We feasted on a variety of traditional dishes, including couscous, tagines, and flavorful salads. The restaurant's staff treated us like family, sharing stories and laughter as we savored our meal. As the sun began to set, casting a magical glow over the blue walls of Chefchaouen, we raised our glasses in a toast to this unforgettable city.

As I reflect on our time in Chefchaouen, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared as a family. We've explored ancient landmarks, savored delicious cuisine, and immersed ourselves in a vibrant culture. We’ve also learned a few things about traveling as a family, like always packing extra snacks and being prepared for unexpected detours. These are the moments that make traveling with family so special, even if Lena did have to remind me to pack sunglasses at the last minute.
Chefchaouen has not only provided us with incredible memories but has also broadened our perspectives and deepened our appreciation for the world around us. It's a place that will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and one that we hope to return to someday.
Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Berlin, carrying with us the sights, sounds, and flavors of Morocco. While I am sad to leave this enchanting blue city, I am also excited to return home and share our adventures with friends and family. And, of course, to catch up on work at the tech startup – vacation is great, but those lines of code aren’t going to write themselves!
Thank you, Chefchaouen, for the unforgettable memories. Until we meet again!
As we prepare to leave, I can't help but feel a tinge of sadness. But I know that the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. Chefchaouen has given us a new perspective on life, a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity, and a stronger bond as a family. It's a place that I will always cherish and recommend to anyone seeking an authentic and enriching travel experience. I am already looking forward to planning our next adventure, perhaps exploring the Brandenburg countryside or revisiting some of Berlin's hidden gems. But for now, it's time to say goodbye to the Blue Pearl of Morocco and head back to our cozy apartment in Prenzlauer Berg. Until next time, Chefchaouen!
P.S. I almost forgot! I did manage to pick up a few extra souvenirs at Jabir Shop. Lena might say I went a little overboard, but I couldn’t resist the beautiful craftsmanship. I’m already planning how to incorporate these treasures into our home decor, adding a touch of Moroccan flair to our Berlin apartment.
The weather in Chefchaouen in September is generally mild and pleasant. The average high temperature is around 82°F (28°C), while the average low temperature is around 59°F (15°C). There is a low chance of rain, and the humidity is moderate. It is a good time to visit because the weather is comfortable for exploring the city and surrounding areas.
I’m already anticipating our return and thinking of all the things we still want to experience. From hiking in the Rif Mountains to taking a cooking class and learning to make traditional Moroccan dishes, there’s so much more to discover in this magical place. Until then, I’ll keep dreaming of blue streets and the warm smiles of the Chaouen locals.
And who knows, maybe next time we’ll convince Lena to try the camel burger at Cafe Clock!
Until our next adventure!
