A Day of Exploration and Discovery

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serenity of nature with the vibrant energy of Chefchaouen's artisan scene. It's amazing how a single day can offer such diverse experiences, leaving you feeling both refreshed and culturally enriched. I was excited to delve deeper into what this charming blue city has to offer, and today certainly didn't disappoint.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Clock. The kids were excited to try Moroccan pancakes, while Lena and I opted for something a bit more traditional. I enjoyed a flavorful tagine, savoring the spices that are so characteristic of Moroccan cuisine. The atmosphere was lively, with music playing softly in the background and the aroma of fresh coffee filling the air. It was the perfect way to start our day.

After breakfast, we set off for Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. The drive itself was stunning, with the landscape transforming as we ascended into the Rif Mountains. The air grew crisper, and the views became more panoramic. Sofia was particularly excited, pointing out the different rock formations and the occasional goat herder tending to their flock.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that take you off the beaten path.

Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve is a hidden gem. Spanning over 33,000 hectares, it's a haven for biodiversity, with diverse flora and fauna. We spent hours hiking along the trails, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. The park is home to various species of oak, maritime pine, and cedar. I learned that it also houses 33 species of mammals, 91 species of birds, and 29 species of reptiles. While we didn't spot any Barbary macaques, we did see several interesting birds, which Lena, with her museum curator's eye, was quick to identify.

We made our way to a viewpoint that offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From there, we could see Chefchaouen nestled in the valley below, a sea of blue against the backdrop of the mountains. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to appreciate the beauty of nature and the tranquility of our surroundings. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice.

After our nature excursion, we drove back to Chefchaouen for lunch at Amigo. This cozy restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagine, couscous, and sardine. Sofia, surprisingly, loved the couscous, devouring it with gusto. The food was delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. It was a perfect spot for a family lunch, a chance to refuel and recharge before our next adventure.

With our bellies full, we decided to explore the artisan scene of Chefchaouen. The medina is filled with shops selling colorful shawls, scarves, carpets, ceramics, and leather goods. We wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the craftsmanship and the vibrant colors. Sofia was particularly drawn to the blue pottery, a distinctive feature of Chefchaouen.

I found myself drawn to a shop called Chefchaouen crafts, a treasure trove of local artisan products. The shop was filled with vibrant textiles, intricate pottery, and unique jewelry. The scent of traditional Moroccan spices filled the air, adding to the sensory experience. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug, a piece that I knew would remind us of our time in Chefchaouen for years to come.

Lena, with her keen eye for detail, found a set of handcrafted metalwork lanterns. The intricate designs and the warm glow they emitted captivated her. She envisioned them hanging in our Berlin apartment, adding a touch of Moroccan charm to our home.

Sofia, of course, wanted a souvenir of her own. After much deliberation, she chose a small, blue ceramic cat. She named it Chefchaouen and vowed to take it everywhere with her.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Al Wiam for dinner. This restaurant is known for its tasty Moroccan dishes and its convenient location. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening air and the stunning views of the mountains. I ordered a traditional tagine, while Lena opted for seafood. Sofia, ever adventurous, tried the Moroccan chicken. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Morocco under the starlit sky.
