Day 5: A Stroll Through Serenity: Discovering Kyoto's Spiritual Side
Wander through Kyoto's tranquil paths, ancient temples, and savor exquisite cuisine, experiencing the city's serene beauty and rich heritage.
Whispers of Ancient Footsteps
Today was all about embracing the quieter, more contemplative side of Kyoto. Leaving the tech startup in Berlin feels a world away as I lose myself in the beauty of Zen gardens and historic temples. It's amazing how a change of scenery can shift your perspective. Today was a journey of the soul, a chance to reflect and recharge amidst the stunning backdrop of Kyoto.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, and the grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly cooked rice were a fantastic way to fuel up for a day of walking. The restaurant had a cozy, local vibe, and I enjoyed watching the chefs meticulously prepare each dish. It reminded me of the precision and dedication that goes into both Japanese cuisine and coding – a connection that always brings a smile to my face.
First on the itinerary was the Philosopher's Path. The path, a serene canal-side walk, lived up to all expectations. Though the cherry blossoms were yet to be in full bloom, the early signs of spring were in the air, with plum blossoms adding delicate color along the way. The gentle sound of the water flowing alongside the path was incredibly soothing, creating a perfect atmosphere for reflection. I took my time, enjoying the quiet moments and the occasional glimpses of traditional houses and gardens. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Berlin, a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple things.

The beauty of simplicity is often found in the quiet moments of reflection.
As I strolled along, I couldn't help but think about Lena and Sofia. They would have loved this peaceful walk. I imagined Sofia chasing butterflies along the path, her laughter echoing through the trees. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday, to share this tranquility with my family. Perhaps next year we can come during the peak of the cherry blossom season.
My walk along the Philosopher's Path led me to Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. Unlike its golden counterpart, Ginkaku-ji isn't covered in silver. Instead, it embodies a more understated elegance, perfectly reflecting the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi – finding beauty in imperfection. The meticulously raked sand garden, known as the Sea of Silver Sand, was particularly impressive, a testament to the artistry and attention to detail that permeates Japanese culture. The views from the upper garden offered a panoramic vista of Kyoto, a reminder of the city's rich history and natural beauty.

From Ginkaku-ji, I made my way to Nanzen-ji Temple, a sprawling Zen complex nestled at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains. The sheer scale of the temple was awe-inspiring, from the towering Sanmon Gate to the intricate details of the Hojo garden. I wandered through the various sub-temples, each with its own unique charm and character. The Suirokaku Aqueduct, a brick structure that carries water through the temple grounds, was an unexpected sight, a blend of Japanese and European influences that added to the temple's unique atmosphere. I paid a small fee to climb the Sanmon Gate, and the panoramic view of Kyoto was well worth the effort. It was easy to imagine the monks of centuries past, meditating in this serene setting.

Lunch was a delightful experience at Kinmata, a traditional Kyoto restaurant housed in a beautifully preserved machiya (traditional wooden townhouse). The restaurant itself is a tangible cultural heritage of Kyoto, providing an authentic setting for the exquisite Kaiseki cuisine. The chef's mastery of Kyoto vegetables was evident in every dish, and the presentation was as beautiful as it was delicious. I savored each bite, appreciating the fresh, seasonal ingredients and the delicate flavors.

As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred Kaiseki restaurant. It was an unforgettable culinary journey. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the chef's creativity and skill. The restaurant's commitment to using only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients was evident in every bite. The flavors were complex and nuanced, a testament to the chef's deep understanding of Japanese cuisine. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. It was a truly special dining experience, one that I will cherish for a long time.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Bar K6, a renowned Kyoto bar known for its sophisticated atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails. The bar had a classic, old-world charm, and the bartenders were true professionals. I ordered a signature cocktail, and it was a perfect blend of flavors, a testament to the bartender's skill and creativity. It was a great place to unwind after a day of exploring, to soak in the atmosphere and reflect on my experiences. I chatted with some locals, learning more about Kyoto's history and culture. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Nijo Castle, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. I’m also looking forward to trying Goichi Pizza for lunch and Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION for dinner. Before heading back to the hotel, I might check out the Daimaru Kyoto Store for some souvenirs.
As I walked back to my Hotel Wing International Premium Kyoto Sanjo, the city was quiet, the temples and gardens bathed in moonlight. The day had been a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with Kyoto's spiritual side and to appreciate the beauty of simplicity. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible city, to immerse myself in its culture and history. It was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, of taking the time to appreciate the world around us. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that tomorrow would bring new adventures, new discoveries, and new memories to cherish.

The Rain Prayer Festival (Amagoi Sai) at Kifune Shrine was held today, March 9th, but I was unable to attend. However, I read that this festival is a traditional event to pray for favorable weather, blessings of water, and a bountiful harvest for the year. I'll try to attend it next time I'm in Kyoto.
