Oasis of Inspiration

Today was a vibrant exploration of Marrakech, diving deep into its artistic soul and savoring its culinary treasures. It was a day filled with colors, history, and flavors that painted a vivid picture of this captivating city. From the tranquil gardens to the thought-provoking photography, every moment was a new discovery.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at L'mida Marrakech. Isabela had read rave reviews about their modern take on Moroccan cuisine, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant had a lovely, warm atmosphere, and the staff were super friendly, which made for a great start to the day. I particularly enjoyed the chicken skewers, while my friends opted for the traditional méchoui. The fresh juices were also a hit, setting us up perfectly for our artistic adventures.

Our first stop was the Jardin Majorelle, a place I had been eagerly anticipating since planning this trip. As someone who appreciates blending architecture with natural beauty, I knew this garden would be special. The moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a kaleidoscope of colors and exotic plants. The intense Majorelle blue of the buildings against the lush greenery was simply breathtaking. It felt like stepping into a living painting.

The garden was created by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, who moved to Marrakech in 1919 and began developing the garden in 1923. It became his passion project, filled with plants from around the world. Later, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé acquired the garden in 1980, saving it from potential development and restoring it to its former glory. The garden is home to over 300 plant species from five continents. Wandering through the winding paths, we discovered hidden fountains, tranquil ponds, and a stunning array of cacti, palms, and bamboo. The air was filled with the sweet scent of jasmine and the sounds of birds singing.

Color is everthing, color is vibration like music; everything is vibration.

After immersing ourselves in the beauty of Jardin Majorelle, we headed next door to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. As someone with a keen interest in cultural exchange, I was eager to explore the connection between the iconic designer and Morocco. The museum itself is a modern architectural marvel, designed by Studio KO. The exterior, with its intricate brickwork, evokes the weaves of fabric, blending seamlessly with its surroundings.

Inside, the museum showcases the life and work of Yves Saint Laurent, highlighting his deep connection to Marrakech. There were photos, sketches, and garments from Saint Laurent's personal collections. One hall was dedicated to Jacques Majorelle, further emphasizing the link between the garden and the designer's creative vision. The museum also had temporary exhibitions. The Berber Art Museum is a must-see, showcasing the rich panorama of Morocco's indigenous inhabitants through displays of jewelry, arms, and carpets.

Leaving the YSL Museum, we were ready for lunch and made our way to Bazaar Cafe. This place had a fantastic vibe with an elegant and intimate interior. We headed straight to the rooftop terrace, which offered a cool retreat from the afternoon heat. The menu was diverse, with plenty of vegetarian options, and the food was delicious. I opted for a traditional tagine, while some of my friends tried the hummus and tapas. With reasonable prices for the area, it was an affordable fine dining spot.

In the afternoon, we visited the House of Photography. Housed in a beautifully restored riad, the museum presents a remarkable collection of photographs spanning from the 1870s to the 1950s. Founded by Patrick Manac'h and Hamid Mergani, the museum aims to preserve and showcase Morocco's visual history. Wandering through the riad, we discovered documentary photos, art photos, and moving portraits that captured the essence of Moroccan life during that period. The rooftop terrace provided a panoramic view of Marrakech, making it a perfect spot to reflect on the images we had seen.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Pepe Nero for dinner. Located in the old Medina, this restaurant is a hidden gem with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The decor was enchanting, reflecting the beauty of the place and its high-level gastronomy. The menu offered a journey of different tastes and options, blending Italian and Moroccan cuisines. I started with king prawns, followed by the lamb shoulder, which was cooked to perfection. The cool staff worked hard, making the experience wonderful. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with art, culture, and culinary delights.

To cap off the evening, we decided to experience Marrakech's nightlife at the Churchill Bar. Located in the La Mamounia hotel, this bar oozes British refinement and celebrates the art of living. The oak-lined interior was styled after a vintage Pullman railway carriage, offering a cozy and glamorous setting. We indulged in exceptional champagnes and spirits, savoring classic vintages. The staff shared tales of the hotel's celebrated guests, from Winston Churchill to the Rolling Stones, adding to the bar's allure. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore El Badi Palace, Madrasa Ben Youssef, and Musée Boucharouite, diving deeper into the history and architecture of Marrakech. I’m also looking forward to visiting 33 RUE MAJORELLE, a shop that I’ve heard offers a unique selection of local crafts and designs. As the city quiets down, I am filled with anticipation for another day of exploration and discovery in this magical city.

The weather in Marrakech in April is quite pleasant, with comfortable temperatures ranging from 55°F to 77°F. We had about 9 hours of sunshine today, which was perfect for exploring the gardens and museums. I was also glad I had packed a light jacket, as the evenings can get a bit cooler.

Today was more than just a sightseeing tour; it was an immersion into the heart and soul of Marrakech. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this city with my friends and look forward to sharing more of our adventures in the days to come.

It is experiences like this that remind me why I love to travel. They broaden my perspective, deepen my understanding of different cultures, and create lasting memories. As I continue this journey through Marrakech, I am excited to see what other treasures this city holds. The blend of history, art, and culture is truly captivating, and I am eager to uncover more of its secrets.

As I reflect on the day, I am reminded of a quote by Yves Saint Laurent:

Fashions fade, style is eternal.

This quote encapsulates the essence of Marrakech, a city where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern influences, creating a timeless style that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul.
