A Whirlwind Start in Marrakech

Today marked the beginning of our Moroccan adventure, and what a start it was! Marrakech immediately enveloped us in a sensory tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. From the towering Koutoubia Mosque to the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the serene Le Jardin Secret, our first day was a whirlwind of unforgettable experiences. I'm excited to share every moment with you, as we dive headfirst into the heart of Moroccan culture.



The journey here with my friends was smooth, though long, with our connecting flight through Europe. Stepping out of the airport, the warm April air, a balmy 26°C (79°F) during the day and a cooler 12°C (54°F) at night, was a welcome change from Kingston's lingering chill. We quickly found our pre-arranged transportation to Riad Linda, our home for the next ten days. The drive was an introduction to the organized chaos of Marrakech traffic, a dance of scooters, cars, and horse-drawn carriages, all vying for space on the bustling streets.

After settling into our riad, a charming oasis of tranquility, we ventured out to explore. Our first stop was the Koutoubia Mosque, a towering symbol of Marrakech. Its minaret, a magnificent example of Almohad architecture, dominates the city's skyline. I learned that the mosque was built in the 12th century, commissioned by the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min, and its name comes from the Arabic word for booksellers, a nod to the area's history as a marketplace for manuscripts. While non-Muslims can't enter the mosque itself, the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful respite from the city's hustle and bustle. We strolled through the gardens, admiring the intricate tile work and the serene atmosphere. The Koutoubia's influence is undeniable; I discovered that its design served as a model for the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat. As a historical building restoration consultant, I was particularly impressed by the mosque's enduring presence and its role in shaping Moroccan architecture. It's truly a monumental beacon of Islamic architecture and faith.

Next, we plunged into the heart of Marrakech: Jemaa el-Fnaa. This bustling square is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the epicenter of Marrakech's vibrant street life. As we approached, the square exploded with a cacophony of sounds – the rhythmic beat of drums, the hypnotic melodies of snake charmers, and the animated chatter of locals and tourists alike. The air was thick with the aroma of spices, grilled meats, and freshly squeezed orange juice. It was an assault on the senses, but in the best possible way. I felt like I had stepped into a scene from One Thousand and One Nights. There were storytellers captivating their audiences with ancient tales, vendors selling everything from traditional crafts to medicinal herbs, and food stalls offering a tantalizing array of Moroccan delicacies. I even saw a traditional water seller, dressed in colorful attire, offering refreshing drinks from his ornate brass cups.

I tried to capture the energy of the square with my camera, wanting to document every detail of this incredible spectacle. As someone who appreciates cultural exchange, I was fascinated by the way Jemaa el-Fnaa brings together people from all walks of life. The square is open 24/7, but it truly comes alive in the evening, when the crowds swell, and the atmosphere becomes electric. The square was alive with music from great international artists, and the weekly fair offered an array of art. I was also quite impressed to learn that Marrakech brilliantly made history by entering the Guinness Book of Records for 80 hours of non-stop storytelling at Jemaa El-Fna! We spent hours wandering through the square, soaking in the atmosphere and sampling some of the local delicacies. I couldn't resist trying a freshly grilled kebab, bursting with flavor, and a glass of sweet mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality. Isabela would have loved the energy of the square, and I made a mental note to bring her here someday.



Seeking a respite from the frenzy of Jemaa el-Fnaa, we retreated to Le Jardin Secret, a hidden oasis of tranquility in the heart of the Medina. This 19th-century palace complex is a testament to traditional Islamic architecture and design. As we stepped through the intricately carved doors, we were transported to a world of serene beauty. The garden is divided into two distinct spaces: an exotic garden, showcasing plants from around the world, and an Islamic garden, reflecting traditional Moroccan design. The Islamic garden, with its symmetrical layout and tranquil water features, was particularly captivating. The sound of trickling water created a calming atmosphere, a welcome contrast to the bustling streets outside. I learned that the garden is fed by a restored khettara, an ancient underground irrigation system, which was only discovered during the riad's restoration. As someone who appreciates the importance of water in historical contexts, I found this fascinating. The exotic garden was equally enchanting, with its vibrant colors and diverse collection of plants. We climbed the panoramic tower, one of the highest points in the Medina, and were rewarded with breathtaking views of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains in the distance. The tower is definitely worth climbing for the incredible panoramic views of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains. Le Jardin Secret truly is a mesmerizing palace complex. It was the perfect place to reflect on our first day in Marrakech, a moment of calm amidst the vibrant chaos.

For breakfast, we enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal at Dar Cherifa, a charming restaurant known for its authentic cuisine and beautiful setting. The restaurant is located in a 500-year-old riad, considered the oldest in Marrakech, and its courtyard is a tranquil oasis of orange pillars, rose petal fountains, and candlelit tables. I opted for a classic Moroccan breakfast, consisting of msemen (buttery flatbread), honey, and mint tea. The flavors were simple but delicious, and the setting was truly magical. Dar Cherifa has a romantic and exotic terrace. The prices are slightly higher than other places, but reasonable for such a beautiful setting and delicious food.

For lunch, we headed to Nomad Marrakech, a rooftop restaurant overlooking the spice market. The views were stunning, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. Nomad is a Marrakech institution, with a bustling rooftop terrace overlooking the spice market. I ordered the lamb tagine, a slow-cooked stew with tender lamb, vegetables, and aromatic spices. The dish was flavorful and satisfying, and the portion was generous. The service was attentive, and the prices were reasonable. Nomad is a bit pricey, but is the perfect place to spend a relaxing evening with a good atmosphere. We were recommended Nomad several times before and during our time in Marrakech and it did not disappoint. We had a delightful experience and the food was wonderful. The menu is a modern take on traditional Moroccan food and has a great vegan selection and staff are accommodating.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Dar Yacout for dinner, a renowned restaurant housed in a palatial riad. The restaurant is famous for its opulent décor, traditional Moroccan cuisine, and enchanting atmosphere. The Yacout is a landmark of Marrakesh and was amongst the first restaurants created around thirty years ago in the medina. We were greeted with a glass of mint tea and escorted to the rooftop terrace, where we enjoyed panoramic views of the city as the sky turned a fiery orange. Later, we were led to our table in the courtyard, a lavish space adorned with intricate tile work, ornate wood carvings, and lush greenery. The set menu included a variety of Moroccan salads, a chicken and olives dish, shoulder of lamb with couscous, and an assortment of desserts. The food was abundant and flavorful, and the service was impeccable. The setting and the service were top class and the food was abundant but the main dishes need a taste upgrade. Dar Yacout offers an unforgettable dining experience where the magic of Marrakech comes alive through its exceptional food, luxurious setting, and impeccable service. The restaurant is perfect to celebrate any special occasion.

As a final treat, we headed to Le Salama Sky-bar for a nightcap. This rooftop bar offers stunning views of the city, a lively atmosphere, and a wide selection of cocktails. Le Salama Sky-bar is a must-visit for anyone looking for a luxurious dining experience in Marrakech. The staff were friendly and the menu offerings were diverse and innovative. I savored a refreshing cocktail as I watched the city lights twinkle below. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day. The combination of delicious food, stunning views, and excellent service make it a top-notch eatery in the city.

I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. I'm also hoping for a bit more sunshine, even though April is known to be one of the wetter months in Marrakech. However, even with a bit of rain, the city's charm is undeniable. I'm also looking forward to exploring the Souk Semmarine, a bustling marketplace known for its leather goods, spices, and traditional crafts.
