Kanazawa's Secrets Unveiled

Today was a day of delving into the intricate tapestry of Kanazawa's history and spirituality. From the cleverly disguised defenses of a 'Ninja Temple' to the serene and eclectic beauty of a shrine dedicated to a powerful lord, each location whispered tales of a bygone era. The day was a reminder of how architecture can be a silent narrator, telling stories of innovation, faith, and resilience.

My day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. I ventured out to Nyumba, a local spot known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious morning fare. It was a great way to fuel up before embarking on a day of exploration. The city was slowly coming to life, the air still cool and crisp – a perfect start to a day dedicated to uncovering Kanazawa’s hidden gems. As I savored my breakfast, I couldn't help but reflect on how much I enjoy these solitary culinary experiences, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the local flavors and observe the subtle nuances of daily life in Kanazawa.

First on the itinerary was Myouryuji, famously known as the Ninja Temple. Now, I know what you're thinking: ninjas in a temple? While it's true that this temple has no direct connection to those stealthy warriors, the nickname is well-earned. Myouryuji is a marvel of architectural ingenuity, designed with a complex network of hidden tunnels, secret rooms, and deceptive defenses.

The temple was founded in 1643 as a secret armed outpost by the Maeda lords. At the time, the Tokugawa shogunate had banned military defensive structures, so the Maeda family cleverly circumvented this restriction by constructing a network of temples that could act as a line of defense. Myouryuji, in particular, was designed to appear as a two-story building from the outside, but it actually has four stories, 23 rooms, 29 staircases, and a concealed watchtower.

Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.

I joined a guided tour of the temple, and even though it was conducted in Japanese, I was given a folder with pictures and explanations in English. As someone passionate about historical building restoration, I was completely captivated by the temple's design. The hidden tunnels, trapdoors, and secret rooms were not just whimsical features but integral components of a sophisticated defense system. According to legend, there is even a secret passageway from the temple well that leads to Kanazawa Castle. It’s this kind of intricate planning and attention to detail that truly excites me.

After immersing myself in the ingenious architecture of Myouryuji Temple, I was ready for a change of pace. For lunch, I headed to Iki-iki Tei in Omicho Market. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, with vendors hawking fresh seafood, produce, and local delicacies. Iki-iki Tei is a small, popular spot that specializes in incredibly fresh sashimi and seafood bowls. I decided on the Tokusen Hokuriku Don, a bowl piled high with various types of sashimi. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were simply divine. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration.

With my stomach full and my spirits high, I made my way to Oyama Shrine. This Shinto shrine is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga Domain, and his wife, Maeda Matsu. The shrine was originally established in 1599 on Mount Utatsu but was moved to its current location in 1873.

One of the most striking features of Oyama Shrine is its unique main gate, which was completed in 1875. This gate is a fascinating blend of Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural elements. Designed with the help of a Dutch architect, the gate features Dutch-style stained-glass windows on its third floor, which is said to have once functioned as a lighthouse. As I approached the shrine, the gate stood majestically against the sky, a testament to Kanazawa's openness to different cultures and ideas. The fusion of styles was remarkable, and I found myself captivated by the intricate details and symbolism.

The shrine grounds are also home to a beautiful strolling garden with ponds and bridges. I took my time wandering through the garden, enjoying the peace and tranquility. The design of the garden is said to resemble harps and lutes, adding a touch of whimsy to the serene atmosphere. I paused for a moment to admire a statue of Lord Toshiie on horseback, a symbol of the Maeda family's power and influence.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a special dinner at Kanazawa Temakizushi Coil. This restaurant offers a unique do-it-yourself sushi experience, where you can create your own hand rolls from a variety of fresh ingredients. The interior of the restaurant is bright and minimalist, with a modern Japanese sensibility. I chose a selection of fillings, including fresh fish, vegetables, and sauces, and then carefully rolled my own hosomaki. It was a fun and interactive dining experience, and the sushi was absolutely delicious. The tempura that came with the set was also amazing, with a light and crisp batter.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to FURANSU COCKTAIL BAR フランス. This stylish bar is run by French-Japanese brothers and is known for its creative cocktails and relaxed atmosphere. With bottles from all over the world and paintings by local artists adorning the walls, the bar exudes a unique charm. I ordered a custom cocktail, and the bartender crafted a delicious concoction based on my preferences. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Sipping my drink, I thought about the blend of tradition and modernity that defines Kanazawa.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Kanazawa Castle and the Nagamachi District, eager to delve deeper into the city's rich history and culture. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Kanazawa Castle, rebuilt after fires in the Edo period, and strolling through the Nagamachi District, envisioning samurai life in the preserved streets. Before that though, I'm looking forward to breakfast at Itaru.

Reflecting on today, I am reminded of how travel enriches our understanding of history and culture. Each experience, from the ingenious design of Myouryuji to the serene beauty of Oyama Shrine, offers a unique perspective on the past. As a historical building restoration consultant, I am constantly inspired by the ingenuity and craftsmanship of previous generations. These experiences reinforce my commitment to preserving our built heritage for future generations to appreciate and learn from. Tonight, as I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Kanazawa.
