Stepping Back in Time in Kyoto

Kyoto, a city that breathes history, has a way of transporting you to another era. Today, I fully embraced this magical quality, allowing myself to be swept away by the charm of ancient temples, bustling markets, and streets whispering tales of centuries past. It was a day of exploration and discovery, a deep dive into the heart of traditional Japan, and I can't wait to share every moment.

My day began with a visit to the magnificent Kiyomizu-dera. The crisp morning air carried the scent of incense as I approached the temple, perched on the hillside overlooking Kyoto. The sheer scale of the wooden stage, jutting out from the main hall, was breathtaking. It's incredible to think that this structure was built without the use of any nails! As I stood on the stage, the panoramic view of Kyoto unfolded before me, a tapestry of traditional houses nestled amidst the rolling hills. The bare trees, still holding onto the last vestiges of winter, added a stark beauty to the landscape.

Kiyomizu-dera, founded in 778, has a rich history. Originally associated with the Hosso sect of Buddhism, it later formed its own Kita Hosso sect. Over the centuries, the temple has been rebuilt several times, most recently in the 17th century. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Kyoto, a beacon of cultural and historical significance.

Inside the main hall, I admired the small statue of the eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon, the temple's primary object of worship. It's said that the temple was founded by Enchin Shonin, a priest who had a vision directing him to a spring, the Otowa spring, which gives the site its name. Even now, the Otowa Waterfall flows at the base of the main hall, its waters divided into three streams, each said to grant a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. I chose to drink from the stream promising longevity, hoping for many more years to explore and appreciate the world's wonders.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way it seamlessly blends the past and the present.

After Kiyomizu-dera, I wandered down the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These historic streets, lined with traditional wooden buildings, offer a glimpse into Kyoto's past. Originally developed to serve Kiyomizu-dera Temple, they are now filled with shops selling local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. It was a delight to stroll along the cobblestone paths, admiring the architecture and soaking up the atmosphere. The absence of power lines and cars added to the sense of stepping back in time.

Sannenzaka, meaning slope of three years, and Ninenzaka, meaning slope of two years, have a fascinating history. Legend has it that if you fall on either of these streets, you will die within three or two years, respectively. Whether or not you believe the legend, it's a good reminder to watch your step on the sometimes-steep slopes!

I couldn't resist stopping at a few of the shops along the way. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted fan for Isabela, knowing she would appreciate its delicate design and craftsmanship. I also sampled some local sweets, including nama yatsuhashi, a Kyoto specialty made from mochi dough filled with red bean paste. The subtle sweetness and chewy texture were a delightful treat.

As lunchtime approached, I made my way to Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto's Kitchen. This bustling market is a narrow, five-block-long street lined with over a hundred shops and stalls selling everything from fresh seafood and produce to kitchenware and Kyoto specialties. The energy of the market was infectious, a vibrant mix of sights, sounds, and smells.

I wandered through the market, marveling at the variety of foods on offer. There were stalls piled high with colorful pickles, glistening seafood, and an array of Japanese sweets. Many of the shops offered samples, and I happily indulged in trying different delicacies. I tasted fresh oysters, grilled squid, and a variety of pickled vegetables, each bursting with unique flavors.

I stopped at a stall selling tamagoyaki, a Japanese rolled omelet, and watched as the vendor skillfully prepared it on a hot griddle. The omelet was sweet and savory, a perfect combination of flavors. I also sampled some matcha ice cream, a Kyoto specialty made with green tea powder. The bitterness of the matcha was balanced by the sweetness of the ice cream, creating a refreshing and delicious treat.

For lunch, I decided on Komefuku, drawn in by the promise of authentic tempura. I was not disappointed, the tempura was incredibly fresh and expertly prepared. The seafood salad with sashimi was also a highlight, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and skillful preparation. The polite and helpful staff only enhanced the experience.

In the evening, I sought out a memorable dining experience and chose The Cellar Kyoto. Finding it felt like discovering a hidden gem, tucked away and exuding an exclusive atmosphere. The food was exquisite, and the wine pairings elevated the meal to another level. The ambiance was perfect for a solo traveler seeking a sophisticated yet relaxed setting.

Alternatively, I considered Gion Mikaku, a long-standing wagyu specialty restaurant along the Shirakawa River. The idea of savoring high-quality Wagyu beef while enjoying the breathtaking seasonal views was certainly appealing. However, the allure of The Cellar Kyoto's hidden ambiance won out this time.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences. I felt a deep connection to Kyoto's history and culture, a sense of having truly immersed myself in the city's essence. From the grandeur of Kiyomizu-dera to the charm of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and the vibrancy of Nishiki Market, every moment was a treasure.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Kyoto, visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tofuku-ji Temple, and Chionin Temple. I'm particularly excited to see the thousands of vermilion torii gates at Fushimi Inari, a sight I've long dreamed of experiencing. I might also check out L'Escamoteur, a bar recommended for its unique atmosphere.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took a final stroll through the streets of Kyoto, savoring the quiet beauty of the evening. The city was bathed in a soft glow, the temples and traditional houses silhouetted against the night sky. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place, a city that truly captures the heart and soul.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Kyoto has so much to offer, and I'm eager to discover more of its hidden treasures. I wonder what tomorrow will bring, what new experiences and insights await me. One thing is certain: my journey through Kyoto is far from over, and I'm excited to see where it leads.

This trip reminds me of my early days exploring Ouro Preto. It's not just about seeing the sights, but about feeling the history, tasting the culture, and connecting with the spirit of a place. And Kyoto, with its ancient temples, bustling markets, and timeless streets, has a spirit all its own.

I am so glad that I remembered to bring my camera, but I forgot my umbrella and an extra memory card for the camera. Tomorrow I will make sure to buy these items to make sure that I can capture the beauty of Kyoto.

As I drifted off to sleep, I was already dreaming of torii gates, serene gardens, and the countless wonders that Kyoto holds. Tomorrow can't come soon enough!

The air is crisp, carrying the scent of plum blossoms, a sure sign that spring is on its way, even if winter still has a bit of a hold. I am falling in love with Kyoto!
