Finding Peace in Higashiyama: A Kyoto Story
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet reflection in Kyoto's Higashiyama district. As a historical building restoration consultant, I often find myself drawn to places where the past whispers through the present. Higashiyama, with its temples, gardens, and traditional shops, is precisely such a place. Leaving behind the modern comforts of Hotel KADO Gosho - Minami Kyoto, I ventured out, eager to immerse myself in the beauty and history that awaited.

My first stop was Kodaiji Temple, a place steeped in history and tranquility. The temple, established in 1606 by Kita no Mandokoro, also known as Nene, in memory of her late husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's great unifiers, exudes a sense of peace that's palpable. As I walked through the grounds, I couldn't help but think of Isabela and Mateus, and how much they would have loved the serene atmosphere. Perhaps on our next trip, we can all come here together.

The main hall, rebuilt in 1912 after several fires, stands as a testament to the temple's resilience. The gardens, designed by Kobori Enshu, are a masterpiece of landscape architecture. I spent a considerable amount of time wandering through the rock garden, a vast expanse of raked gravel representing the ocean. The precision and artistry were truly inspiring. I was particularly fascinated by the Kodaiji Makie, a special lacquerwork featuring designs of powdered gold and silver set in lacquer. The craftsmanship was simply exquisite, a true reflection of the Momoyama period's artistic flair.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its grand temples and gardens but also in the subtle details that reveal the city's rich history and artistic heritage.
From Kodaiji Temple, I strolled through Maruyama Park, a green oasis nestled in the heart of Kyoto. Although February isn't the peak season for cherry blossoms, the park still held a certain charm. I could imagine how stunning it must be in late March or early April when the cherry trees are in full bloom. Even now, the park offered a tranquil escape from the bustling city. I found a quiet spot to sit and sketch, capturing the essence of the winter landscape in my notebook. The bare trees, the subtle hues of the winter sky, and the gentle breeze created a scene of understated beauty.

After my visit to the park, I decided to explore the local shops. I ventured into Kazari Nishiki, a store in Nishiki Market offering seasonal Japanese goods and Western clothing with a Kyoto touch. The shop was a treasure trove of unique items, from delicate ceramics to beautifully crafted textiles. I picked up a small, hand-painted fan as a souvenir for Isabela, knowing she would appreciate its intricate design and artistry. The owner of the store, who clearly has a keen eye for detail, changes the store's looks and product mix each month with the seasons of Kyoto in mind. It was fascinating to see how she incorporated the atmosphere of Kyoto into even the smallest details.

For lunch, I wanted to experience authentic Kyoto cuisine. I chose Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura, a restaurant specializing in set meals made with fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with both counter seating and traditional tatami mat rooms. I opted for the counter, eager to watch the chef at work. The meal was a culinary delight, each dish meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a true reflection of Kyoto's culinary heritage. I savored every bite, appreciating the chef's skill and dedication to his craft. I was also intrigued by the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option during lunch, featuring six to seven kinds of Obanzai that match well with rice such as pumpkin, taro root, bean curd lees, hijiki seaweed.

In the afternoon, I found myself drawn back to Kodai-ji Temple. There's something incredibly soothing about the atmosphere there, a sense of timelessness that resonates deeply with me. I spent more time exploring the gardens, discovering hidden corners and appreciating the intricate details of the landscape design. The bamboo grove, with its towering stalks and dappled sunlight, was particularly enchanting. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I walked through the grove, listening to the gentle rustling of the leaves.
As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a special dinner. I considered Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a steak restaurant located along the Takase River, but ultimately decided on THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, an Italian restaurant known for its elegant setting and exquisite cuisine. Located in a building that was once the residence of a famous Japanese painter, the restaurant exuded an atmosphere of refined elegance. The menu featured a range of Italian dishes with a Kyoto twist, using local ingredients to create unique and flavorful combinations. I opted for the tasting menu, eager to sample a variety of the chef's creations. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, making me feel like a truly valued guest.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Higashiyama, soaking up the atmosphere of the neighborhood. The traditional wooden buildings, the narrow alleyways, and the soft glow of lanterns created a scene of timeless beauty. I paused to admire the architecture of the buildings, noting the intricate details and the craftsmanship that had gone into their construction. As a historical building restoration consultant, I couldn't help but appreciate the care and attention that had been given to preserving these historic structures.
Tomorrow, I plan to venture further afield, exploring Byodoin, Uji Park, and Ujigami Jinja. I'm particularly excited to visit Byodoin, with its iconic Phoenix Hall, a masterpiece of Heian period architecture. I also hope to relax and have a drink at Bar Fishbowl. But for now, I'm content to reflect on the day's experiences, grateful for the opportunity to explore the beauty and history of Kyoto. The city has a way of captivating the soul, leaving a lasting impression that lingers long after you've departed. I'm already looking forward to my next adventure here, hopefully with Isabela and Mateus by my side.
The events of today have served as a reminder of the importance of preserving our architectural heritage. It is so important to preserve these buildings and locations, as it is preserving our history and our story. It is something I am proud to do, and something I will continue to do.
