Journey to Uji: A Day of Discovery

Today's adventure took me to Uji, a charming city just south of Kyoto, known for its exquisite temples and lush green spaces. As a historical building restoration consultant, I was particularly excited to explore the architectural marvels and historical sites that Uji has to offer. The crisp air and clear skies made it a perfect day for wandering and soaking in the serene atmosphere.

My day began with a visit to Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that truly embodies the beauty of Buddhist Pure Land architecture. The Phoenix Hall, with its elegant design and intricate details, was a sight to behold. It's incredible to think that this structure has stood for centuries, surviving fires and calamities. As I stood there, admiring the reflection of the hall in the pond, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The hall is so iconic that it is featured on the back of the Japanese ten-yen coin. I took a guided tour of the Phoenix Hall's interior. It was fascinating to learn about the history and significance of this sacred place. Inside, the statue of Amida Buddha exuded a sense of calm and enlightenment.

The beauty of a building is not just in its structure, but in the stories it holds and the emotions it evokes.

After Byodoin, I strolled through Uji Park, a delightful green space perfect for a leisurely walk. The park is situated on a small island in the Uji River, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The cherry blossoms were just starting to bloom, adding a touch of pink to the scenery. I sat on a bench, watching the river flow by, and felt a deep connection to nature and the history of this place. The park connects to the Tale of Genji Museum. Uji has a rich literary history, being the setting for the final chapters of *The Tale of Genji*, considered one of the world's first novels. I made a mental note to bring Isabela and Mateus here one day; they would absolutely love the scenery and the cultural significance.

Next on my itinerary was Ujigami Jinja, believed to be the oldest standing shrine in Japan. This Shinto shrine, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, exuded a sense of ancient history and spiritual energy. The main hall, built in the nagare-zukuri architectural style, was a testament to the craftsmanship of the past. I learned that Ujigami Jinja was closely linked to Byodoin Temple, serving as its guardian shrine. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin and his sons. I found it particularly interesting that Ujigami Jinja is associated with rabbit motifs, stemming from a myth about a divine rabbit guiding a lost prince. I explored the grounds, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and admiring the intricate details of the shrine. It's amazing to think that this sacred place has been standing for over a thousand years.

For lunch, I decided to try Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, a restaurant known for its delicious tonkatsu. The restaurant was tucked away in a small alley, giving it a hidden gem vibe. I ordered their signature dish, the *tonkatsu* set, and was not disappointed. The pork cutlet was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the set came with rice, miso soup, and pickles. It was the perfect comfort food after a day of exploring. I followed a group of people through a tiny walkway that lead to this restaurant and it turned out to be one of the best things I ever did because I had some of the best tonkatsu ever. The entrance to the restaurant is subtle, but the store is quite large. I was able to choose the part of the pig and add rice and cabbage.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Bar Fishbowl for a relaxing evening drink. The bar had a unique atmosphere, with fish tanks adorning the walls, creating a tranquil and mesmerizing ambiance. I ordered a Japanese whiskey and sat back, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The bar had a wide selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. The atmosphere was excellent and relaxing, with the fish tanks adding to the ambiance. I chatted with some locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. It was a perfect way to end a day of cultural exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate the opportunity to travel and immerse myself in different cultures. Uji, with its serene temples, beautiful parks, and delicious food, had captured my heart. It was a day of discovery, reflection, and connection to the past. As I head back to Kyoto, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, which will take me to Kawaramachi-dori Street, Shinkyogoku Shopping Street Union, and Pontocho Park. I'm excited to explore these vibrant areas and experience more of what Kyoto has to offer.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the vibrant Kawaramachi-dori Street and the bustling Shinkyogoku Shopping Street Union. I am also hoping to take a relaxing stroll through Pontocho Park. I have heard great things about the Kikunoi Roan restaurant and am hoping to try it out.

I am also planning to visit Kyoto LOFT to do some shopping and pick up souvenirs for Isabela and Mateus. It's always nice to bring back a little piece of the places I visit for them to enjoy.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took a moment to appreciate the beauty of the night sky over Kyoto. The stars seemed brighter here, perhaps because of the peacefulness of the city. I felt grateful for the experiences of the day and excited for what tomorrow would bring. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding and fulfilling.

Uji had offered a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, leaving me with a sense of peace and inspiration. It was a day well spent, and I knew that the memories of this journey would stay with me for a long time. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of ancient temples, flowing rivers, and the gentle sway of cherry blossoms in the wind. I was ready for whatever adventures awaited me in Kyoto tomorrow.

The city of Uji is rich in both historical and cultural resources that include world heritages, such as Ujikami Shrine and Byodoin Temple, and the beautiful sight of Ujigawa River that keeps streaming after 1,000 years. Sometimes as a battlefield, and at other times as a center of cultures, Uji has always been closely associated with the Japanese history. Historic remains in Uji City pass on the breath of each period and attract us to travel back in time and experience the history and culture of Uji City.
