Day 2: Ancient Echoes and Culinary Delights: A Day of Discovery in Kyoto
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's rich tapestry of history and flavor, from vermilion gates to golden Buddhas and delightful cuisine.
Whispers of the Past
Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Kyoto, a journey that took Isabella and me through vibrant shrines, serene temples, and bustling culinary scenes. It was a day where the ancient whispers of Japan's history resonated with the delightful flavors of its modern gastronomy. We embraced the spirit of discovery, letting each moment unfold with a sense of wonder and gratitude.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arash's Kitchen. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for the adventures that lay ahead. Arash’s Kitchen, with its Persian and Indian Halal offerings, was quite a find. I enjoyed the flavorful naan, which reminded me of the flatbreads back home in Uruguay, while Isabella savored the spices of her curry. It was a cozy spot, and the friendly service made us feel right at home.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off for the Fushimi Inari Shrine. The train ride there was an experience in itself, watching the city transform into a landscape dotted with traditional houses and snow-dusted gardens. As we stepped off the train at Inari Station, the iconic vermilion torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine beckoned us.
The Fushimi Inari Shrine was nothing short of breathtaking. The seemingly endless path of vibrant orange torii gates snaking up the mountainside created a mesmerizing tunnel. Each gate, donated by individuals and companies, was a testament to the enduring faith and prosperity associated with Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Isabella and I walked hand in hand, marveling at the sight, occasionally stopping to capture the beauty with my camera. The crisp winter air and the soft sunlight filtering through the trees added to the magical ambiance. We only hiked a portion of the trail, but it was enough to feel the spiritual significance of this place. Foxes, believed to be Inari's messengers, were everywhere in the form of statues, each with a unique expression, guarding the shrine grounds.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet moments of reflection amidst the grandeur of history.
Next on our itinerary was the Sanjūsangendō Temple, a stark contrast to the vibrant energy of Fushimi Inari. This temple, with its seemingly unassuming exterior, houses a breathtaking sight within. Sanjūsangendō, officially known as Rengeō-in, is renowned for its 1,001 statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The temple was founded in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori for Emperor Go-Shirakawa. Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by the sheer scale and artistry of the statues. Each figure, crafted from Japanese cypress and covered in gold leaf, possessed a unique expression, a testament to the skill of the artisans who created them. The central statue of the 1000-armed Kannon was particularly awe-inspiring, flanked by rows upon rows of smaller Kannon statues, creating a sea of golden faces that seemed to watch over us. Photography was not allowed inside, but the image is forever etched in my memory.

For lunch, we ventured to Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, eager to sample their renowned tonkatsu. Finding the entrance was a mini-adventure in itself, tucked away in a small walkway. The restaurant had a cozy, traditional ambiance. I chose the premium pork cutlet, while Isabella opted for the chicken katsu. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the sesame seeds we ground ourselves added a personal touch to the meal. Isabella enjoyed her chicken katsu just as much. It was a satisfying and comforting meal that warmed us from the inside out.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. We made our way to Kyoto Star Bar, known for its expertly crafted cocktails and elegant atmosphere. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, greeted us warmly and guided us through their extensive menu. I selected a whisky-based cocktail, while Isabella chose a gin concoction. Sipping our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures, the echoes of ancient history mingling with the lively chatter of the bar. The Kyoto Star Bar offered a unique experience, a blend of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern mixology. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, we had reservations at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. The restaurant is set in a beautifully restored traditional building with a serene garden. The ambiance was elegant and romantic. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a variety of seasonal dishes. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The meal was a culinary journey, a celebration of Japanese ingredients and flavors. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As we walked back to The Hiramatsu Kyoto, the city was quiet, the streets illuminated by soft, warm light. The day had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and tastes, a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto's culture and history. Isabella and I talked about our favorite moments, already eager for what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Ryōan-ji, and perhaps find some unique souvenirs at the Kyoto Crafts Store. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the Zen garden at Ryōan-ji; I've read so much about it, and I'm keen to experience its tranquility firsthand. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for this incredible journey, for the opportunity to share it with my beloved Isabella, and for the memories we were creating together. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
