Day 8: A Day of Serenity and Tradition: Discovering Kyoto's Ancient Charms
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's timeless beauty with a visit to Kiyomizu-dera, a stroll through Sannenzaka, and delightful culinary experiences.
Kyoto's Gentle Embrace
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a serene immersion into the heart of Kyoto. Isabella and I embraced the city's timeless beauty, wandering through ancient temples and charming streets, savoring the flavors of traditional cuisine, and soaking in the unique atmosphere that makes Kyoto so special. It was a day of discovery, a day of connection, and a day that will forever be etched in our memories of this enchanting city.
Our day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. This charming restaurant, tucked away on a quiet backstreet of Kawaramachi, offered a peaceful start to our explorations. I opted for the organic brown rice bowl topped with fried soybeans in teriyaki sauce, while Isabella chose the heavenly vegan pancakes. It was a delicious and nourishing way to fuel our adventures.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to Kiyomizu-dera. The crisp winter air nipped at our cheeks as we ascended the winding path leading to the temple. The temple, founded in 778, stands as a testament to Kyoto's rich history and cultural heritage. As we approached the main hall, the iconic wooden stage came into view, offering a breathtaking panoramic vista of Kyoto. The view was nothing short of spectacular, a sprawling cityscape nestled amidst the rolling hills, a scene that whispered tales of centuries past.

The temple's history is fascinating. Founded by Enchin Shonin, Kiyomizu-dera, or 'Temple of the Pure Water Spring', has been a sacred site for over 1200 years. The main hall, a designated National Treasure of Japan, houses a statue of the bodhisattva of compassion, Kannon, a figure revered by many. Isabella and I took our time exploring the temple grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and soaking in the serene atmosphere. We paused at the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink from three separate streams, each said to grant health, longevity, or success in studies. I opted for the health stream, hoping for a long and adventurous life ahead.
Kyoto is a city that whispers stories of the past, inviting you to listen and learn.
Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down Sannenzaka, a charming stone-paved path lined with traditional shops and teahouses. The atmosphere was enchanting, a step back in time to old Kyoto. We browsed the various shops, admiring the local crafts and souvenirs. Isabella, with her keen eye for detail, was particularly drawn to the pottery stores, showcasing exquisite Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics. I found myself captivated by the intricate designs of the fans and etchings, each a testament to the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

Sannenzaka, also known as Three-Year Slope, has a curious legend associated with it. It is said that if you stumble and fall on this slope, you will die within three years. While I'm not one for superstitions, I couldn't help but tread carefully, ensuring that I kept my footing on the ancient stones.
For lunch, we ventured to Masayoshi Japanese Dining, eager to sample the local cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I opted for the steak lunch, while Isabella chose a traditional Japanese set meal. The food was exquisite, a delightful blend of flavors and textures that danced on our palates. It was a true culinary experience, a testament to the skill and artistry of Japanese chefs.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Fujiya for dinner, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto Kaiseki cuisine. The chef, Mr. Daisuke Endo, uses traditional craftmanship to create counter seats that simulate Fujitana, traditional cooking and innovative cooking at a Japanese modern table, and also uses Japanese beef, seafood, and Kyo vegetables for courses. We opted for the special course, eager to sample the chef's creations. The meal was a symphony of flavors, each dish carefully crafted with seasonal ingredients and presented with artistic flair. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every bite was a delight. The restaurant allowed children and also offered vegetarian and vegan options.

To cap off the evening, we decided to visit Bar Fishbowl, a chic Western-style bar known for its creative cocktails and English-speaking staff. The bar was lively and welcoming, a mix of locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. I ordered a Japanese whiskey, while Isabella chose a creative cocktail with a fun name. The drinks were expertly crafted, and the atmosphere was perfect for relaxing and reflecting on the day's adventures. I chatted with the bartender, Jesse, a welcoming man who was always up for a nice chat, about the bar's large selection of whiskeys.

As we sipped our drinks, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. We intend to visit the Kyoto International Manga Museum and the Kyoto Railway Museum. Isabella, with her librarian background, is particularly excited about the Manga Museum, while I am eager to explore the Railway Museum, a testament to Japan's technological prowess.
Reflecting on the day, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's beauty and charm. From the serene temples to the bustling streets, every moment was a treasure. As we prepare for our final day in this enchanting city, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that await. I'm also glad that I remembered to pack my camera, comfortable walking shoes, travel guidebook, and warm clothing for the winter season in Japan. I almost forgot my portable phone charger, which would have been a disaster.
Good night from Kyoto!
P.S. I'm already planning our next trip to Japan. Perhaps we'll explore the northern regions or venture to the southern islands. The possibilities are endless!
Until tomorrow!
