Exploring Shirakawa-go: A Journey Through Japan's Timeless Village
Day 5: A Day of Art, Tranquility, and Culinary Delights in Shirakawa-go
Discover art at Jin Homura, serenity at Water Lily Pond, and savor local flavors at Masuzono Bunsuke—a perfect day in Shirakawa-go.
Finding Beauty in Every Corner of Shirakawa-go
Today was a day of contrasts, blending artistic inspiration with serene natural beauty and, of course, the unforgettable flavors of Shirakawa-go. Isabella and I set out to explore some of the village's hidden gems, and it turned out to be one of those days where everything just clicked perfectly.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Masuzono Bunsuke. The restaurant is a short walk from the main town, offering a quiet escape from the usual tourist bustle. It's a quaint, family-run establishment known for its fresh river fish. I opted for the Masuen set meal, which included grilled rainbow trout, sashimi, and sweet simmered fish. The fish was incredibly fresh; they even catch it from their own pond right after you order. Isabella, always the adventurous one, tried the Iwana set meal, featuring char prepared in various ways. We both agreed that the flavors were exceptional, a testament to the restaurant's dedication to quality and tradition. The setting, in a traditional gassho-zukuri building overlooking a peaceful garden, added to the charm. It was a delightful start to our day.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments.
Fueled and ready, our next stop was the Jin Homura Art Museum.
Explore the Jin Homura Art Museum in Shirakawa, where traditional and contemporary Japanese art come together in a stunning cultural experience.
Nestled beside the village parking lot, the museum itself is housed in a beautiful gassho-style building. It showcases the works of Jin Homura, an artist known for his vibrant colors and thought-provoking themes. Homura, after using Shirakawa-go as his studio for two decades, donated his works and the building to the village. The contrast between the contemporary art and the traditional architecture was striking. I was particularly drawn to his pieces that explored the intersection of societal matters and artistic expression. Isabella, with her librarian's eye, appreciated the way the museum harmonized with the surrounding landscape. The museum wasn't large, but it was filled with pieces that resonated deeply with both of us.
After the art museum, we sought a bit of tranquility at the Water Lily Pond.

Located near the Ogimachi bus stop and next to the Wada House, it's a serene spot that offers a different perspective on the village. The water lilies were in full bloom, creating a stunning display of color against the backdrop of the traditional houses. We took our time, strolling along the boardwalk and capturing photos of the picturesque scenery. Isabella was particularly enchanted by the reflections of the gassho-zukuri houses in the water. It was a perfect moment of peace, a chance to simply soak in the beauty of Shirakawa-go.
In the late afternoon, we decided to do some shopping at Sanrakudo.

This charming souvenir shop offered a variety of handcrafted treasures and local delicacies. I was on the hunt for a special memento of our trip, and Isabella was eager to find some unique gifts for our friends back home. The shop was filled with an array of traditional crafts, from pottery and wooden carvings to intricate textiles. We spent a good hour browsing the shelves, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted fan, while Isabella picked out a selection of local sweets and snacks. The shopkeeper, a friendly local born in Ogimachi, shared some interesting stories about the village and its traditions. It was a delightful experience, adding another layer to our appreciation of Shirakawa-go.
For dinner, we ventured to Hidaji, a restaurant known for its soba noodles.

Nestled in a tranquil location, Hidaji offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere. We both ordered the Hida beef soba, a local specialty that combined the delicate flavors of the noodles with the rich, savory taste of the beef. The meal was exceptional, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time, savoring the food and enjoying the company.
As we walked back to our accommodation, the village was quiet and peaceful. The stars were out, and the air was crisp and clean. We reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Shirakawa-go.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Gyokusenin Maru Garden and Nature Forest, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Kita no Sho in the evening. It’s hard to believe we only have a few days left here. Time really does fly when you're immersed in such a magical place.
Tonight, as I sit here writing, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Shirakawa-go has a way of capturing your heart, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It's a place where tradition and nature intertwine, creating an experience that is both enriching and unforgettable. And I'm so glad I get to share it all with Isabella.
