Echoes of the Past in Shirakawa-go
Today, Isabella and I delved deeper into the heart of Shirakawa-go, eager to uncover more of its hidden treasures. After a restful night at Shirakawago Onyado Yuinosho, we were ready to immerse ourselves in the local culture and history. I made sure to bring my camera, hoping to capture the essence of this timeless village, though I did regret not packing that Japanese phrasebook – a mental note for future trips!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yamamotoya. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Isabella chose a more Western-style meal. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the iconic Shirakawago Three Houses.

Shirakawago Three Houses
The Shirakawago Three Houses offered a captivating glimpse into Japan's rural heritage. These gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with their steeply pitched thatched roofs, are truly a sight to behold. As we walked along the charming streets, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and resilience of the people who built and lived in these homes. The surrounding mountains provided a stunning backdrop, making it a photographer's dream. We spent a good couple of hours wandering around, taking photos, and simply soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
Lunch at Tenshukaku
For lunch, we headed to Tenshukaku, drawn by its promise of panoramic views. Perched atop a hill, the cafeteria offered a stunning vista of the entire village. I savored a delicious Hida beef set meal while Isabella enjoyed a wild vegetable miso set. The food was excellent, but the breathtaking scenery truly elevated the dining experience.

Myozenji Museum
After lunch, we visited the Myozenji Museum, a temple of the Buddhist Jodo School. This temple-museum is the largest structure in the village. Founded in 1744, it is located in the village of Ogimachi. The main hall, Honden, is covered with a majestic thatched roof. Inside, the lavish decoration contrasts with the sober aspect of the monks’ residence. The monks’ residence, Kuri, was built two hundred years ago by the area's carpenters. The five-story construction was built without nails or screws, using cypress and zelkova pillars. Exploring the museum, we gained a deeper understanding of the spiritual and cultural life of the region. The serene atmosphere and beautiful architecture made it a truly memorable experience.

Dinner at Tanaka-ya
As evening approached, we made our way to Tanaka-ya for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional local dishes and warm atmosphere. I opted for the Hoba Miso, a regional specialty of miso grilled on a magnolia leaf, while Isabella enjoyed a hearty bowl of udon. The meal was delicious and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

A Nightcap at Shiraogi
Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to stop by Shiraogi for a nightcap. The bar had a cozy and welcoming vibe. I enjoyed a glass of local sake, while Isabella sipped on a plum wine. It was a relaxing end to a full day, chatting with locals and fellow travelers.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Shirakawa-go. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses, the serene temples, and the warm hospitality of the locals had all left a lasting impression. I was also glad that Isabella and I could share this experience together, strengthening our bond as we explored the world.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Hatotani Hachiman Shrine and Midorigaike Pond, seeking more of Shirakawa-go's hidden gems. I’m also hoping to find a Japanese phrasebook at the Mamekichi Honpo Shirakawago shop – it’s time I learned more than just “Konnichiwa!”
