Day 15: Farewell to Chefchaouen: Reflecting on the Blue Pearl's Magic
Reflecting on our final day in Chefchaouen, Morocco, filled with vibrant colors, artistic discoveries, and culinary delights with Isabella.
A Blue Farewell
As our Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on our time in Chefchaouen, the enchanting 'Blue Pearl'. Today marked our final day in this captivating city, and Isabella and I were determined to soak up every last bit of its magic. From exploring ancient gates to savoring local flavors, it was a day filled with unforgettable moments. I’m already anticipating sharing our memories with friends back in Edmonton, perhaps over some maple-infused Moroccan mint tea!
Our day began, as many do, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. I had heard great things about their crepes, and they certainly didn't disappoint. I opted for a savory crepe filled with local cheese and herbs, while Isabella, with her ever-present sweet tooth, chose a Nutella and banana crepe. Sipping on strong Moroccan coffee, we watched the town slowly come to life. It was the perfect start to our last day in Chefchaouen.

With our appetites sated, we set out to explore some of the city's historical landmarks. Our first stop was the Chefchaouen Gate. This imposing structure stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Walking through the gate, I couldn't help but imagine the countless travelers who had passed through it over the centuries. The gate provided a fantastic photo opportunity, with its intricate details and the vibrant blue of the city as a backdrop.

Next, we made our way to Bab El Ain, another significant gate in Chefchaouen. As we approached, we were struck by the serene atmosphere of the surrounding area. Locals were going about their daily routines, children were playing, and the air was filled with the gentle sounds of the city. It was a moment that truly encapsulated the essence of Chefchaouen.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its blue-washed walls but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.
After our historical explorations, it was time for a bit of retail therapy. We strolled through the medina, eventually finding ourselves drawn to B & H Art Shop. This charming shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and artwork. Isabella, with her keen eye for unique pieces, spent ages browsing the displays. I was particularly taken by the intricate woodwork and the vibrant colors of the textiles. We ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-painted bowl as a memento of our time in Chefchaouen.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Jbaria, recommended by several locals. This cozy restaurant offered traditional Moroccan cuisine, and we were eager to sample some authentic dishes. I opted for a tagine, a slow-cooked stew with meat and vegetables, while Isabella chose couscous, a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill of the chef and the quality of the local ingredients. The restaurant itself was a delight, with traditional Moroccan decor and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

As the day drew to a close, we sought out a final culinary experience at Moulay Ali Ben Rached for dinner. This restaurant was known for its stunning views and delicious seafood. We secured a table on the terrace and watched as the sun began to set over the city. The sky was ablaze with color, casting a warm glow over the blue-washed walls of Chefchaouen. I savored grilled calamari, while Isabella enjoyed a flavorful fish tagine. It was the perfect way to end our Moroccan culinary journey.

Reflecting on our time here, I realize how much Chefchaouen has captured our hearts. The city’s tranquil ambiance and the warmth of its people have provided a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of our daily lives back in Edmonton. Isabella, ever the bookworm, has already started planning a scrapbook filled with photos and mementos from our trip. I’m looking forward to sharing our stories with friends and family, perhaps even inspiring them to embark on their own Moroccan adventure. I'll make sure to highlight that August is a great time to visit Chefchaouen, as the mountain air provides a refreshing escape from the summer heat.
As we prepare to leave Chefchaouen tomorrow, heading back to Tangier for our flight home, I know that a part of us will remain here, amidst the blue-washed walls and the winding alleyways. This trip has not only been a journey of discovery but also a reminder of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. I’m bringing back a renewed sense of curiosity and a deeper appreciation for different cultures. And, of course, a suitcase full of souvenirs and spices!
Until next time, Chefchaouen. Thank you for the memories.
