Echoes of the Past, Visions of Tomorrow
Today, Isabella and I embarked on a journey through Chefchaouen that felt like stepping back in time, while simultaneously being awestruck by the present beauty of this blue city. It was a day of exploring ancient landmarks and soaking in panoramic vistas. As we prepare for our final day here, I couldn't help but reflect on how much this trip has enriched our understanding of Moroccan culture and history.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Hajji. Having heard it was one of the oldest restaurants in Chefchaouen, dating back to the 1940s, we were eager to experience its traditional fare. I opted for a classic Moroccan tajine, while Isabella chose the couscous. Both were delicious, providing a perfect start to our day of exploration. The staff was incredibly welcoming, adding to the charm of the place.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was Bab el Mahrouk, a historically significant city gate. As we approached, the intricate details of the architecture immediately caught my eye. Built in 1204, this gate has witnessed centuries of Chefchaouen's history. I learned that it was once known as Bab ash-Shari'a, or 'Gate of Justice,' but later became known as Bab Mahrouk, or 'Gate of the Burnt,' after a local rebel was burned here. Standing there, I imagined the countless stories this gate could tell, the processions, the merchants, and the historical events that unfolded around it. Isabella, ever the historian, was fascinated by the blend of Berber and Arabic influences in the gate's design.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of ancient places.
After soaking in the history of Bab el Mahrouk, we decided to take a stroll through the medina, letting ourselves get lost in the labyrinthine alleyways. The vibrant blue hues of the buildings never cease to amaze me. We stumbled upon artisan shops selling colorful handicrafts, textiles, and pottery. Isabella, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, found a beautiful hand-painted bowl that she plans to use for serving maple syrup back in Edmonton – a little piece of Morocco to remind us of our travels.
For lunch, we ventured to Galitos, a restaurant recommended for its Mediterranean cuisine. I decided to try their mushroom pizza, while Isabella went for the spaghetti. The food was delicious, and the intimate atmosphere made it a perfect spot to relax and recharge. The service was also remarkable; the staff was attentive and gracious.

Our afternoon was dedicated to visiting the Bouzafer Mosque, perched atop a hill overlooking Chefchaouen. The climb was a bit challenging in the August heat, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. Built in the 15th century by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa, the mosque offers a remarkable historical and spiritual experience. Although it's no longer used for daily prayers, it still holds significant cultural and religious importance. From this vantage point, the entire blue city unfolded before us, a breathtaking sight that I tried to capture with my camera. The Rif Mountains in the backdrop added to the stunning scenery. According to some sources, the mosque is also known as the Spanish Mosque, built by the Spanish in the 1920s.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to BILMOS, a bar known for its location on the square with upstairs seating and nice views. We enjoyed a couple of drinks while watching the bustling activity below. The vibe was lively, and it was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Dinner was at مطعم يمي (Yami Restaurant). We had read it offered a beautiful view, and it didn't disappoint. I chose a traditional Moroccan dish, while Isabella opted for something different. The food was tasty, and the service was excellent. It was a perfect way to end our day, reflecting on all the incredible sights and experiences we had.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Moroccan adventure. According to the itinerary, we plan to visit Chefchaouen Gate and Bab El Ain. We intend to have breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream, lunch at Restaurant Jbaria, and a final dinner at Moulay Ali Ben Rached. We also plan to stop by B & H Art Shop for some last-minute souvenirs. I'm looking forward to soaking in every last moment of this enchanting city.
As I sit here writing, I can't help but feel grateful for this experience. Chefchaouen has captured a piece of my heart, and I know I'll cherish these memories for years to come. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a truly unique destination, one that I highly recommend to any adventurous traveler.
The weather today was typical for August, hot with clear skies, making it ideal for exploring. The sun was intense, but the occasional breeze provided some relief.
I am also happy to report I didn't forget any travel essentials today! We made sure to bring our sunscreen and water bottles, learning from our earlier oversight. It's the small victories that make travel smoother and more enjoyable.
Isabella and I are already discussing our next adventure. Perhaps South America, to explore my roots a bit more? Or maybe Southeast Asia? The world is full of possibilities, and we're excited to see where our travels take us next.
