Join José and Isabella as they hike Jebel El-Kelaa, explore Callejón de Sidi Bouchouka, and savor Chefchaouen's culinary delights.
Reaching New Heights and Discovering Hidden Gems
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of physical challenge and cultural immersion here in Chefchaouen. We started with a hearty breakfast, conquered a mountain, wandered through a picturesque alleyway, and ended the day with delicious Moroccan food and lively conversation. It's days like these that make traveling so rewarding, pushing us out of our comfort zones and opening our eyes to new perspectives.
Our morning began at Restaurant Bab Kasaba. Isabella and I fueled up with a traditional Moroccan breakfast. I opted for the chicken lemon tajin, while Isabella went for the margherita pizza. The food was amazing and the prices were affordable. Suleiman's service was excellent. After breakfast, we felt ready to tackle the day’s adventures.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to conquer Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. The hike was described as moderately difficult, and I was eager to test my limits. As someone who enjoys hiking in the Canadian Rockies, I was curious to see how this mountain compared. Isabella, ever the supportive wife, laced up her hiking shoes and joined me.

The initial part of the trail was a steady incline, winding through rocky paths. The air was crisp and clean, and the views of Chefchaouen shrinking below were already stunning. We passed local vegetation and even saw some farmers along the way. About three hours into the hike, the trail became rugged, with rocks strewn across the path.
The panoramic views from the top were more than worth the effort.
As we ascended, the views became increasingly panoramic. The blue city sprawled beneath us, a mesmerizing contrast against the rugged Rif Mountains. I paused to catch my breath and soak it all in. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – the feeling of being on top of the world, surrounded by natural beauty.
The final stretch to the summit was challenging. There was some scrambling over large boulders, as well as up loose gravel, before reaching the peak. But when we finally reached the top, the view was magnificent. From 1616 meters high, I could see the entirety of Chefchaouen spread out below. We took some photos to capture the unforgettable views.
The descent offered fresh perspectives of the region. We followed a different path that wound its way back down the mountain. The tranquility of the mountains was palpable, a welcome escape from the bustling medina below.
After the invigorating hike, we decided to immerse ourselves in the heart of Chefchaouen’s medina. Our destination: Callejón de Sidi Bouchouka. This picturesque alleyway is known for its iconic blue-washed walls, colorful mosaics, and vibrant atmosphere.
As we entered the alleyway, we were immediately struck by the explosion of color. The blue walls were adorned with red flower pots, painted lanterns, and crimson accents. It was a photographer’s dream, and Isabella and I couldn’t resist snapping photos at every turn.

We strolled through the narrow passage, surrounded by artisanal shops selling traditional crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The air was filled with the aromas of local cuisine wafting from nearby cafes and eateries. We paused to admire the stunning murals and artwork that adorned the walls, capturing the essence of Chefchaouen’s artistic spirit.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Terrasse Djebli. This restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and stunning views of the Rif Mountains. I ordered the goat tagine, while Isabella opted for the chicken couscous. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. The mint tea brought extra comfort to the experience.

After lunch, we decided to relax and soak in the atmosphere at Cafe Clock. This cafe is a cultural hub, offering more than just food and drinks. It hosts storytelling nights, live music, and cooking workshops. We enjoyed fresh mint lemonade on the roof terrace overlooking the city. The multicultural atmosphere was vibrant. We chatted with some fellow travelers and shared stories about our adventures.
