Friday Adventures in the Blue City
Today was a day of wandering, of getting lost in the blue labyrinth of Chefchaouen, and of discovering hidden gems around every corner. Isabella and I set out with no particular agenda other than to soak in the atmosphere and capture the essence of this magical place. It’s amazing how a simple stroll can turn into an unforgettable experience when you’re surrounded by such unique beauty.
Our day began, as most do on vacation, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured to Restaurant Bab Ssour, enticed by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. The morning air was crisp, a welcome change from the Edmonton summer we left behind, as we found a cozy spot on their terrace. I opted for the traditional Baisara, a fava bean soup seasoned with cumin and paprika, while Isabella chose the lentil soup. Both were served with warm, crusty bread, perfect for dipping. The friendly staff made the experience even better, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the local cuisine. It was the perfect start to our day. I felt right at home, reminiscing about the simple, hearty meals I grew up with in Trinidad, Uruguay.
With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to find the famed Sidi Bouchouka photo spot. As we navigated the winding alleyways, each turn revealed a new vista of blue hues. The city was already bustling with activity, locals going about their daily routines and tourists snapping photos at every corner. We finally arrived at Sidi Bouchouka, and it was even more enchanting than the pictures suggested. The blue walls were adorned with colorful mosaic tiles and flower pots, creating a vibrant contrast. I took a few shots, trying to capture the essence of the scene, while Isabella admired the intricate details.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply allow yourself to wander and discover.
Next on our list was Rue Ibn Asskar, another iconic street known for its picturesque charm. As we strolled along, we were captivated by the unique architecture and the vibrant atmosphere. The street was lined with shops selling everything from traditional Moroccan crafts to spices and textiles. Isabella, ever the librarian, was fascinated by the ancient doors and the stories they seemed to tell. I couldn't help but imagine the countless people who had walked these streets before us, each with their own stories and experiences.

After our morning of exploration, our stomachs started to rumble again. For lunch, we decided to try MIDO'S, a small eatery known for its delicious and affordable food. It was a tiny place, with only a few tables, but the queue outside was a testament to its popularity. We managed to snag a spot and ordered their famous Mido’s burger and some falafel. The food was simple but incredibly tasty, and the owners were friendly and welcoming. It felt like a true local experience, a far cry from the tourist traps we sometimes stumble upon. Isabella was thrilled to find vegan options, a testament to the restaurant's accommodating nature.

With renewed energy, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Bazar Ahmed. The shop was a treasure trove of Moroccan handicrafts, from colorful ceramics to intricate metalwork. I was on the hunt for a unique piece of pottery to bring back home, while Isabella was drawn to the vibrant textiles. We spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, chatting with the owner, and learning about the history and craftsmanship behind each item. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted bowl, a perfect reminder of our time in Chefchaouen.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Casa Arina for dinner. This restaurant was recommended to us for its authentic Moroccan dishes and its vibrant atmosphere. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with colorful lanterns and traditional Moroccan furniture. I ordered a tagine, while Isabella opted for grilled chicken skewers. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Chefchaouen.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Dar Antonio Chefchaouen and Dar Meziana, hoping to uncover more of the city's hidden stories. We’ll also be having breakfast at Traditional kitchen, lunch at Restaurant Ali Baba, and dinner at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ. And, if we have time, we might even check out Assaada, a local bar. I'm eager to see what other treasures this blue city holds, and I’m sure Isabella is too.
