Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today in Montepulciano, Isabella and I found ourselves wandering through layers of history, from the imposing Fortezza Medicea to the bustling Piazza Grande, and even glimpsing the darker side of the past at the Museo della Tortura. It was a day filled with exploration, contemplation, and, of course, delightful Tuscan flavors.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Corte Dell' Ulivo. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. After a simple yet satisfying meal of local pastries and cappuccino, we set off to conquer the Fortezza Medicea.

The Fortezza, a military fortress built in 1261, has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. As we approached its imposing walls, I couldn't help but imagine the countless battles and power struggles that had played out here over the centuries. Climbing to the top, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia. The rolling hills, dotted with vineyards and cypress trees, stretched out before us in a breathtaking display of Tuscan beauty. Isabella, ever the historian, pointed out landmarks in the distance, recounting tales of medieval skirmishes and Renaissance intrigue. The fortress itself is a blend of history and modernity, housing not only historical exhibits but also classrooms for Kennesaw State University. It's a unique blend that speaks to Montepulciano's ability to embrace the future while honoring its past.
The stones of Montepulciano whisper stories of power, art, and resilience, inviting every traveler to become part of its timeless narrative.

Next on our itinerary was Piazza Grande, the heart of Montepulciano. As we stepped into the square, we were immediately struck by its grandeur. The Palazzo Comunale, with its miniature version of Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, stood proudly on one side, while the elegant Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi and the Duomo framed the square. The architectural harmony of the space was captivating, a testament to the Renaissance vision that shaped Montepulciano.

Piazza Grande is more than just a pretty square; it's the center of Montepulciano's social and civic life. Though we didn't stumble upon any major festivals today, the energy of the square was palpable. People strolled, chatted, and soaked in the atmosphere, and I imagined the square filled with music and celebration. I learned that Piazza Grande has also served as a film set, lending its timeless beauty to movies like *New Moon*. It's easy to see why; the square exudes a dramatic charm that's perfect for the silver screen.
For lunch, we ventured to Porta di Bacco, a charming osteria known for its home-style Tuscan cooking. We shared a plate of *pici* pasta, a local specialty, and savored the rich flavors of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the region's culinary delights. Isabella, of course, struck up a conversation with the owner, learning about the history of the restaurant and the secrets to making the perfect *pici*.

After lunch, we decided to visit the Museo della Tortura di Montepulciano. I admit, I was a bit hesitant. Museums of this kind can be disturbing, but I also believe it's important to confront the darker aspects of history.

The museum is housed in Palazzo Bellarmino, and the collection is a chilling reminder of human cruelty. Instruments of torture from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Era were displayed with historical context and explanations. While disturbing, the exhibit was also thought-provoking, prompting reflection on the importance of human rights and the dangers of intolerance. As we walked through the museum, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease, a reminder of the potential for darkness that exists within us all.
As the afternoon waned, we sought solace in the E Lucevan le Stelle - Wine Bar Bistro. This cozy spot, with its outdoor deck and Tuscan hill views, was the perfect place to unwind after a heavy museum visit. We ordered a cheese plate and a couple of glasses of sparkling rosé, and watched as the sun began to dip below the horizon. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories.

For dinner, we indulged in a memorable meal at Ristorante Logge Vasari. The restaurant, known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine and elegant ambiance, did not disappoint. We savored a delicious meal of grilled Florentine steak and roasted vegetables, paired with a robust red wine. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was both refined and welcoming.

As we sipped our *digestivi*, we reflected on the day's adventures. Montepulciano had revealed itself to be a town of contrasts – a place where medieval echoes mingled with Renaissance splendor, where dark histories were juxtaposed with the warmth of Tuscan hospitality. It was a day that engaged our minds, stirred our emotions, and delighted our senses.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the underground city at Ercolani Cellars, visit the Azienda Agricola Palazzone, and perhaps even venture to Castello di Montegualandro. I'm eager to see what other treasures Montepulciano has in store for us. Until then, *salute*!

And for those of you who might be visiting Montepulciano around the same time next year, mark your calendars for the Rosè Wine Day at Tenuta Torciano Winery on June 14, 2026. It sounds like a delightful way to celebrate the Tuscan summer!

Also, something I would love to witness is the Bravìo delle Botti, an uphill wine barrel race between the eight districts of Montepulciano. The race always takes place on the last Sunday of August. I read that before each race, important and evocative ritual ceremonies take place, such as the drawing to determine the start order, fire branding, the Town Hall's delivery of the “panno” to the Districts Magistrate, and the votive wax offerings to San Giovanni in the cathedral. I will definitely try to plan a trip around that time in the future to witness this event.
