Day 6: Unearthing Ancient Secrets and Savoring Tuscan Flavors in Montepulciano
Discover Montepulciano's hidden underground city, taste exquisite wines at Palazzone, and explore the historic Castello di Montegualandro.
A Day of Discovery Beneath and Above Montepulciano
Today was a day of delving deep into history and savoring the incredible flavors that Montepulciano has to offer. Isabella and I embarked on a journey that took us from the depths of Etruscan cellars to the heights of medieval castles, all while soaking in the stunning Tuscan scenery. I always find it fascinating to uncover the layers of history embedded in these ancient towns, and today was no exception.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Lalma Cafe & Tearoom. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of Tuscan pastries was the perfect start. I opted for a cappuccino, while Isabella enjoyed a selection of herbal teas. The cafe had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and it was easy to see why it's a local favorite. It's conveniently located near some apartments, which might be worth considering for future trips.
Fueled and ready, we headed to our first adventure: the Ercolani Cellars - Underground City and Museum. This was an experience unlike any other. As we descended into the depths, we were immediately transported back in time. The cellars are a labyrinth of Etruscan tunnels, used for storing and aging their renowned Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the cellars and how they have been used for centuries. The free tour was informative, though it did feel a bit rushed at the end with the wine tasting. Still, it was a unique opportunity to explore the hidden depths beneath Montepulciano. The wines themselves were quite good, with a range of flavors from dark fruits to hints of chocolate and oak.

After emerging from the underground city, we made our way to Azienda Agricola Palazzone. This winery offered a different perspective, focusing on the art of winemaking with a commitment to sustainability. The views from the winery were breathtaking, overlooking the rolling hills of Tuscany. We opted for a wine tasting, and it was an experience to remember. The sommelier guided us through a selection of their best wines, explaining the nuances of each vintage. Isabella, with her keen interest in the environment, was particularly impressed by Palazzone's dedication to organic and sustainable practices. We learned about their unique approach to winemaking, which combines traditional techniques with modern innovations. I even considered adopting an olive tree through their Club 100 project, which Isabella thought was a fantastic idea.

For lunch, we chose Baccano Hostarìa Montepulciano, a charming spot known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. The climb up the hill to get there was well worth it, as the hostaria offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with local specialties. I decided to try the pici all'aglione, a classic Tuscan pasta dish with a rich tomato and garlic sauce. Isabella opted for the ribollita, a hearty bread and vegetable soup. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and we savored every bite. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore Castello di Montegualandro. Although technically located in Umbria, its proximity to Montepulciano made it an irresistible destination. As we drove towards the castle, the landscape transformed into a picturesque countryside dotted with olive groves and vineyards. The castle itself is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of Lake Trasimeno. The history of Castello di Montegualandro is fascinating, dating back to Etruscan times and even serving as a strategic point for Hannibal during the Battle of Lake Trasimeno. Over the centuries, it has been owned by various noble families and has witnessed countless historical events. Unfortunately, we couldn't go inside as it is now a private residence. However, admiring its imposing walls and imagining its storied past was an experience in itself. I couldn't help but picture Hannibal's troops camped on those very grounds, planning their ambush against the Romans.

Before heading back to Montepulciano, we stopped at Voltaia28 Montepulciano. This shop specializes in handcrafted leather goods made in Italy. I was looking for a new travel bag, and Isabella, with her impeccable taste, helped me choose a beautiful leather duffel bag. The quality of the leather was exceptional, and I knew it would be a cherished travel companion for years to come. The shop owner was passionate about his craft, and it was a pleasure to support a local artisan.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Montepulciano for dinner at Ristorante degli Archi. This restaurant is tucked away in a charming alley in the historic center. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic, with exposed wooden beams and warm lighting. I started with the gnocchi ripieni di pecorino con fonduta al tartufo, while Isabella chose the pici with carbonara senese al tartufo. For our main courses, we opted for the chef's recommendations, which were both exquisite. The service was attentive and the food was simply divine. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and indulgence.

Tomorrow, we're off to Siena! We plan to visit Piazza del Campo, Siena Cathedral, and Torre del Mangia. I'm particularly excited to see the Piazza del Campo, as I've read so much about its history and beauty. We'll also be sure to sample some of Siena's culinary delights, with planned stops at E Lucevan le Stelle - Wine Bar Bistro for breakfast, Cucina Tipica Toscana for lunch, and Rosso Rubino Trattoria for dinner. To cap off the evening, we might visit Opificio 16 - Enoteca & Wine Bar for a nightcap. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in Tuscany. I am also glad that I packed all of my essentials, even though I forgot the European power adapter and an umbrella.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate these moments of shared discovery with Isabella. Her enthusiasm and curiosity always add a special dimension to our travels. It's these shared experiences that create lasting memories and strengthen our bond. Plus, her knack for finding the best local shops always comes in handy!
I am also reminded of how travel broadens one's perspective, connecting me to different cultures and ways of life. As a Maple Syrup Coordinator from Edmonton, stepping into these ancient cellars and sampling world-class wines feels like a world away from my daily routine. Yet, it's these contrasts that make travel so enriching. It's a reminder that there's so much to see and learn beyond our own backyards.
I am looking forward to more adventures, and I am glad to be sharing them with you all. Until tomorrow!
