A Day in Siena: Stepping Back in Time

Today, Isabella and I ventured into the heart of Siena, a city that seems to have paused in the medieval era. The air was thick with history, and every corner we turned revealed another postcard-perfect scene. It was a day filled with architectural wonders, artistic masterpieces, and panoramic views that stretched across the Tuscan landscape.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at E Lucevan le Stelle - Wine Bar Bistro. Though the name suggests a focus on wine, their breakfast offerings were delightful. Isabella enjoyed a cappuccino with a flaky pastry, while I opted for a strong espresso and a slice of local cake. Fueled up, we set off to explore the city's main attractions.

Piazza del Campo: The Heart of Siena

Our first stop was the Piazza del Campo, Siena's principal public space. This vast, shell-shaped square is truly the heart of the city. As we stepped into the piazza, I was immediately struck by its unique design and the palpable energy that filled the air. The ochre-colored buildings that surround the square create a warm, inviting atmosphere. I could almost hear the echoes of historical events that had unfolded here over the centuries.

I couldn't help but imagine the Palio di Siena, the famous horse race that takes place here twice every summer. The thought of the square transformed into a race track, with horses thundering around the perimeter, was exhilarating. I made a mental note to try and witness this spectacle someday.

We took some time to simply sit and soak in the atmosphere. The piazza was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn to its undeniable charm. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the sound of Italian chatter filled the air. It was the perfect place to people-watch and appreciate the beauty of everyday life in Siena. I remember back in Trinidad, Uruguay, the town square was always the center of activity, a place where everyone gathered. This felt similar, yet grander, more steeped in history.

The beauty of Siena lies not just in its monuments, but in the way it has preserved its history and traditions.

Siena Cathedral: A Masterpiece of Gothic Architecture

Next on our list was the Siena Cathedral, also known as the Duomo di Siena. As we approached the cathedral, I was awestruck by its intricate facade of white, green, and red marble. The level of detail was simply incredible, a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who built it. The Duomo is an imposing structure that dominates the Siena skyline. Construction began in the 12th century, with additions and modifications continuing well into the 19th century. The exterior combines Romanesque and Gothic elements.

Inside, the cathedral was equally impressive. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The black and white marble stripes, symbolic of Siena, added a unique touch. We spent a long time wandering through the interior, marveling at the sculptures by Donatello and other famous artists.

One of the highlights was the Piccolomini Library, a stunning room adorned with vibrant frescoes by Pinturicchio. The frescoes depict scenes from the life of Pope Pius II and are incredibly detailed and colorful. It felt like stepping back in time as we gazed upon these masterpieces. The inlaid marble floor of the cathedral is also a unique marvel, featuring 56 panels depicting stories of Christian and Roman origin.

The Duomo was originally intended to be even larger, but the Black Death in the 14th century brought construction to a halt. The half-finished walls of the Duomo Nuovo still stand as a reminder of Siena's grand ambitions. Climbing to the upper gallery provided panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

Torre del Mangia: Climbing to New Heights

Our final attraction of the day was the Torre del Mangia, a slender tower that rises above the Piazza del Campo. Named after its first bell ringer, who apparently had a habit of squandering his money, the tower stands as tall as the Siena Cathedral, symbolizing the equal power of the church and the state.

The climb to the top was not for the faint of heart. The narrow, winding staircase seemed to go on forever, with over 400 steps to conquer. There were moments when I questioned my decision, but the thought of the view from the top kept me going. Isabella, ever the supportive wife, encouraged me every step of the way. I remember hiking in the Rockies back home, and this climb felt just as challenging, but with the added element of history surrounding us.

Finally, we reached the summit, and the view was more than worth the effort. From 87 meters high, we could see the entire city of Siena spread out before us, a tapestry of red rooftops and winding streets. The Tuscan countryside stretched out in the distance, a sea of rolling hills and vineyards. It was a truly breathtaking sight.

I learned that the Torre del Mangia was built between 1338 and 1348. The views from the top were 360 degrees of Siena and the surrounding countryside. The climb cost 10 euros, and children under 11 were free.

Evening Delights

After our descent from the Torre del Mangia, we were both ready for a relaxing evening. We strolled through the streets of Siena, soaking in the atmosphere and searching for a place to have dinner. We chose Cucina Tipica Toscana for lunch. The restaurant offered a menu inspired by seasonal products.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Opificio 16 - Enoteca & Wine Bar. This cozy wine bar had an inviting atmosphere, and we were eager to sample some local wines. Isabella, with her refined palate, carefully selected a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, while I opted for a glass of Chianti Classico. We savored each sip, enjoying the flavors and aromas of Tuscany. The bar also offered artisanal cheeses and cured meats, which perfectly complemented the wine.

For dinner, we decided on Rosso Rubino Trattoria. The restaurant had a modern decor and a calm atmosphere. The prices were attractive, and the staff was competent. We shared a plate of tortellini, ragout, and gnocchi. For dessert, we had chocolate cake and panna cotta.

As we walked back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had experienced. Siena had truly captured my heart, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. It was a day that I would cherish forever.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Val d'Orcia, Pienza Cathedral, and the Piccolomini Library. I am excited to see what adventures await us in this beautiful region of Tuscany.

It’s funny, before I left Edmonton, I was coordinating shipments of maple syrup, and now I’m wandering through medieval streets, sipping wine, and soaking up the Tuscan sun. Life truly is an adventure!
