A Day of Cultural Immersion

Today was a day of diving deep into the cultural heart of the Japanese Alps. Isabella and I set out with a plan to experience the art, traditions, and flavors of this unique region, and I must say, it exceeded all expectations. From the serene museums to the bustling souvenir shops, every moment felt like a step further into the soul of Japan.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tanaka-ya. The soba was delicious, and it gave us the energy we needed for the day ahead. Tanaka-ya had a very traditional feel to it. It was a great way to start the day.

First on our itinerary was the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. As we approached, the architecture itself was a sight to behold. The museum houses an impressive collection of European Art Nouveau glassware, furniture, and objects. I was particularly captivated by the delicate vases and paste jewelry by Tiffany, Lalique, Daum, and Gallé. Isabella, with her librarian's eye for detail, was fascinated by the Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibit, drawing parallels to his architectural work in Glasgow. The highlight for both of us was Lalique's monumental glass fountain, which once graced the Champs-Élysées in Paris. It’s incredible to think that something so beautiful was lost and then rediscovered in a shed in Paris! I found myself completely lost in the artistry and craftsmanship. It reminded me of the dedication and passion that goes into creating the perfect batch of maple syrup back home in Edmonton – a different art form, perhaps, but driven by the same pursuit of excellence.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing ourselves in art, we journeyed back towards Shirakawa-go, eager to experience more of the local culture. For lunch, we stopped at Hidaji, a charming little place known for its Hida beef croquettes. The croquettes were indeed satisfyingly filling and delicious, a perfect quick bite as we continued our exploration. Isabella enjoyed a warm bowl of soba, remarking on the subtle differences in flavor compared to what we've had elsewhere. I couldn’t help but think how much the simple, hearty flavors of the Hida region reminded me of the traditional Uruguayan dishes my abuela used to make. Simple, but full of love and tradition.

Our next stop was the Ishikawa Prefectural Noh Theater, and it was an experience unlike any other. Noh is a classical form of Japanese dance-drama, characterized by its slow, stylized movements and the use of masks. I'll admit, I didn't know much about Noh before today, but I was immediately drawn in by the artistry and symbolism of the performance. The theater itself was a beautiful space, designed to preserve and promote this unique art form. Isabella, with her background in literature and history, was particularly interested in the historical context of Noh and its significance in Japanese culture. We learned about the intricate movements, the symbolic masks, and the chanting that accompanies the performance. It was a truly mesmerizing experience, offering a glimpse into a world far removed from our own.

After the performance, we took some time to explore the Kodaijin Souvenir Store. I always enjoy browsing local shops, looking for unique items that capture the essence of a place. Isabella, of course, was on the hunt for books about Japanese folklore and mythology. We found a few lovely pieces of pottery and some beautifully crafted wooden toys for our friends' children back home. I even picked up a small bottle of local sake, thinking it would be a nice addition to our collection back in Edmonton. We chatted with the shop owner, who shared some interesting stories about the history of Shirakawa-go and the traditions of the region. It's these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding.

As evening approached, we made our way to Gassho for dinner. Gassho is known for its traditional gassho-style architecture and its delicious local cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, rustic atmosphere. We ordered a selection of local specialties, including Hoba miso, grilled river fish, and mountain vegetables. The Hoba miso was particularly memorable, with its rich, savory flavor and the aroma of miso grilling on a magnolia leaf. Isabella, always the adventurous foodie, tried everything with gusto, exclaiming over the unique flavors and textures. I savored each bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic and delicious food. The meal was a perfect end to a perfect day, a culinary journey that complemented our cultural explorations.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the beauty and richness of Japanese culture. From the serene museums to the bustling souvenir shops, every moment felt like a step further into the soul of Japan. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Isabella. Her curiosity, her enthusiasm, and her love of learning make every adventure even more special. As we walked back to our accommodation, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Nishi Chaya District and the Gokayama Folklore Museum, continuing our exploration of this fascinating region. We're also hoping to find a cozy bar called Tenkara, Shirakawa to wind down in the evening. Until then, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting village of Shirakawa-go, where the past and present blend seamlessly, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

The summer in Shirakawa-go is proving to be a stunning backdrop to our adventures, with the lush greenery contrasting beautifully with the traditional architecture. It is hard to imagine what it must be like in the winter, but I am sure it is just as magical. I am so glad that we decided to come here, and I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
