Whispers of the Past
Today was all about embracing the quiet corners of Shirakawa-go, stepping away from the bustling main streets and finding solace in its hidden gems. Isabella and I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to uncover the stories woven into this timeless village. Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand landmarks, but in the gentle whispers of nature and the simple rhythms of daily life.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Nomura. I opted for the soba noodle set, eager to taste the local specialty. Isabella, ever the adventurous one, chose a selection of small, traditional dishes that offered a delightful array of flavors. The family-run atmosphere of Nomura made the experience even more special; it felt like we were being welcomed into their home. Sipping on green tea, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the chance to experience such authentic Japanese hospitality. It reminded me of the warmth I feel back in Edmonton, sharing mate with friends on a cold winter evening.
With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Wooden Walkway. It was easy to find from the Shirakawa-go Information Center. We headed south on Route 156, then took a right onto the path that led towards the river. The walkway meandered alongside the Shogawa River, offering stunning views of the surrounding gassho-zukuri farmhouses nestled amidst the lush greenery. The gentle murmur of the river and the rustling of leaves created a soothing soundtrack to our stroll. We paused frequently to snap photos, trying to capture the essence of this idyllic scene. Isabella, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the intricate craftsmanship of the wooden structures, marveling at the way they blended seamlessly with the natural landscape. I thought about the maple syrup production back home, and how we also strive to work in harmony with nature, respecting the land that provides for us.

The beauty of Shirakawa-go lies not just in its iconic farmhouses, but in the serene moments of connection with nature and the warm embrace of its local culture.
Next on our itinerary was Midorigaike Pond. We walked for about 10-15 minutes along the marked paths to reach the pond. The pond's emerald-green waters were mesmerizing, reflecting the surrounding trees like a mirror. It was so peaceful there. It felt like we had stepped into a different world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life. I learned that in medieval times, Midorigaike Pond was considered a dwelling of the mountain deity, and legend had it that drinking its water would extend one's life span. While I didn't dare to test the legend, I certainly felt a sense of rejuvenation simply by being there.

Isabella and I spent a good hour simply sitting by the pond, soaking in the tranquility. We talked about our families, our dreams, and the simple joys of life. These are the moments I cherish most when traveling with Isabella – the quiet conversations, the shared laughter, and the unspoken connection that transcends words. It's like when we're hiking in the Canadian Rockies, finding a quiet spot to simply be present in nature's grandeur.
As lunchtime approached, we made our way to Hakusuien, a restaurant housed in a traditional gassho-style building. I was intrigued by their specialty, the “oyaji wazen (Japanese hot pot with bear meat),” but opted for the Hida beef hoba miso wazen, a regional dish featuring Hida beef grilled on a hoba leaf with miso. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water. Isabella chose a set meal with assorted traditional Japanese dishes. The Hida beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, the miso adding a rich, umami depth. Isabella enjoyed her meal, finding it a delightful introduction to the local cuisine. We learned that Hakusuien has been around for almost 50 years. It's amazing to see local businesses like this thrive and share their culture with visitors from around the globe.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Kobikiya, a charming souvenir shop next to the Wada House. Kobikiya was filled with local crafts, snacks, and sake. Isabella was immediately drawn to the crepe sarubobo dolls, unique to the shop and available in a rainbow of colors. I picked up a bottle of doburoku, a local unrefined sake, eager to share it with friends back home. The shop itself was a treasure trove of traditional architecture, with its thatched roof and wooden beams. It felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by the artistry of generations past. The owner, Mr. Shigeji, was outside sawing wood and greeted us with a smile [Kobikiya; Shirakawa-go Tourist Association].

Our final stop of the day was Masuzono Bunsuke for dinner. We were both eager to try their river fish dishes. The restaurant itself had a rustic charm. We sat overlooking a small garden. I opted for the Masuen set menu, which included grilled salted char, rainbow trout cooked in sweet sauce and sashimi, and fried masu trout. Isabella chose the Iwana set menu, featuring various dishes made with char. The fish was incredibly fresh, the flavors delicate and nuanced. It was a perfect way to end our day of culinary exploration, savoring the authentic tastes of Shirakawa-go. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The restaurant embodies the essence of traditional Japanese dining, offering an array of delicious dishes that highlight the region's culinary heritage.

As we walked back to our accommodation, the village was bathed in the soft glow of twilight. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this timeless village with Isabella. It's these simple moments, away from the crowds and the tourist traps, that truly capture the essence of a place and create lasting memories. It reminded me of the quiet evenings we spend at our cabin in Alberta, watching the sunset over the lake, a sense of peace washing over us.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Hatotani Hachiman Shrine and Shirakawago Three Houses, continuing our exploration of Shirakawa-go's cultural heritage. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us, and to share those experiences with you all. Until then, may your own travels be filled with moments of serenity and discovery.
One thing I've learned on this trip is the importance of having the right gear. I realized I forgot my portable power bank and travel adapter! Thankfully, Isabella had a spare adapter, but I'll definitely need to pick up a power bank soon. It's a good reminder that even the most seasoned travelers can overlook the essentials.
I'm also keeping an eye out for any local events happening during our stay. It would be amazing to witness a traditional festival or celebration. I'll be sure to share any exciting discoveries with you all.
Good night from Shirakawa-go! I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you tomorrow.
