A Day of Subterranean Wonders and Culinary Delights

After a restful night in Phong Nha, I was eager to explore the famed caves that this region is known for. Today's itinerary promised a deep dive into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, with visits to both Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave. I was also looking forward to experiencing the local cuisine, sampling the flavors that make Vietnamese food so unique.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. Situated along the Son River, the views were as delightful as the food. I enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese coffee, strong and sweet, alongside a plate of *bò né*, a sizzling beef dish with eggs and bread. Fuelled up and ready for adventure, I set off to explore the caves.

First on the agenda was Phong Nha Cave. To reach the cave entrance, I enjoyed a scenic boat ride along the Son River. The name 'Phong Nha' translates to 'Wind through Teeth', inspired by the eerie sound of the wind whistling through the cave's stalactites. As the boat glided into the cave's mouth, I was immediately struck by the coolness of the air and the stillness of the water. The cave is truly breathtaking, a mesmerizing labyrinth of underground passages adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. The boat journey took us deep into the cave, where the sunlight faded and the formations took on an otherworldly glow.

Exploring Phong Nha Cave felt like stepping into another world. The scale of the cave system is immense, with underground passageways stretching for kilometers. I learned that the cave system features underground passageways and river caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The stalagmites at the cave's entrance inspired its name “Wind and Teeth”. The cave is home to a 13,969-meter underground river, and scientists have surveyed 44.5 kilometers of passages, though tourists can only explore the first 1500 meters. I was in awe of the natural artistry on display, the intricate formations sculpted over millions of years.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest, darkest places.

After emerging from Phong Nha Cave, I made my way to Tien Son Cave, also known as the 'Dry Cave'. To reach the entrance, I climbed a series of steps carved into the mountainside. The climb was a bit strenuous, but the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape were well worth the effort.

Tien Son Cave is perched high on the mountainside, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Inside, I was greeted by a dazzling array of stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by the cave's lighting system. The cave is often referred to as a 'stalactite castle' due to its ethereal beauty. According to scientists, Tien Son Cave was created tens of millions of years ago when a water current holed the limestone mount. I learned that the cave was discovered by a local inhabitant in April 1935 and was initially called Tien (Fairy) Cave for its mysterious beauty.

The formations in Tien Son Cave were truly remarkable. Some resembled famous landmarks, while others took on the shapes of mythical creatures. Striking some of the formations even produced sounds resembling drums or gongs. The cave is said to have a mystical atmosphere, enhanced by local legends of fairies and brave heroes.

For lunch, I decided to try The Rice House, a local restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I opted for the tofu and eggplant claypot, a flavorful and comforting dish that perfectly showcased the region's fresh ingredients. It was absolutely delicious, and I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic flavors.

In the late afternoon, with the cave explorations complete, I sought out a place to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. I found myself at King Kong Bar Phong Nha, a lively spot known for its friendly atmosphere. I enjoyed a refreshing drink while chatting with fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences from our respective journeys.

As evening approached, I made my way to Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu was filled with traditional Vietnamese dishes. I decided to try the *Cà Ri*, a Vietnamese curry with chicken, lemongrass, and coconut milk. The curry was rich and flavorful, a perfect blend of spices and creamy coconut milk. It was a truly satisfying meal, a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a stroll along the Son River, enjoying the cool evening air and the peaceful ambiance of Phong Nha. The town was quiet, but there was a sense of warmth and community that I found incredibly appealing. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had today, the opportunity to explore such unique natural wonders and to immerse myself in the local culture.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Hang Sơn Đoòng, the largest cave in the world, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. I know that it will be a challenging journey, but I am eager to witness the beauty and grandeur of this natural wonder. I'm also looking forward to visiting the local shop, Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng, to pick up some regional specialties and perhaps a cup of coffee. It's moments like these, exploring new places and connecting with different cultures, that make travel so rewarding. I am excited to continue my journey in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and I look forward to sharing more of my experiences with you all.

In December, Phong Nha experiences mild temperatures, averaging around 18°C to 21.5°C. While rainfall is still common, it's less heavy than in the peak rainy season. I'm glad I packed a light jacket and an umbrella, just in case.

Reflecting on today, I realize that Phong Nha is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. The caves are magnificent, the food is delicious, and the people are warm and welcoming. It's a place where you can connect with nature, challenge yourself physically, and immerse yourself in a rich and vibrant culture. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more unforgettable adventures. I'm so glad I decided to extend my stay and explore this hidden gem in Vietnam.

I'm also grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences with Isabella, even though she couldn't be here with me. I know she would have loved exploring the caves and trying the local cuisine. I can't wait to tell her all about it when I get back to Edmonton. Perhaps we can plan a trip together someday, and she can experience the wonders of Phong Nha for herself.
