Finding Peace in Takamatsu's Gems

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the tranquil beauty and rich history that Takamatsu has to offer. From meticulously landscaped gardens to a village showcasing the island's heritage, it was a day of serene exploration. It’s funny how sometimes the best travel days are the ones where you allow yourself to be led by the destination itself, rather than sticking rigidly to a plan.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ombelico [i]. Lena and I shared some pastries and coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. I always appreciate a good cup of coffee to kickstart my mornings, especially when I know we have a lot of walking ahead of us. It reminded me of the cozy cafes back in Berlin, but with a Japanese twist.

Ritsurin Garden: A Stroll Through Paradise

The first stop on our itinerary was Ritsurin Garden, a place I'd heard so much about. As we stepped through the entrance, we were immediately transported to a world of manicured landscapes, serene ponds, and meticulously shaped pine trees. The garden is vast, covering 16 hectares, and it's designed as a strolling garden, offering new perspectives with every step.

We followed one of the recommended walking tours, which lasted about an hour and covered the southern part of the garden. The air was fresh, and the sounds of nature surrounded us – birds chirping, water flowing, and the gentle rustling of leaves. It was a welcome change from the bustling city life I'm used to in Berlin.

One of the highlights was Nanko Pond, the garden's centerpiece. We even considered taking a boat ride around the pond, but decided to explore the area by foot instead. We strolled across wooden arch bridges and zigzag bridges, each offering unique views of the carefully arranged islets.

Ritsurin Garden is a place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to savor each moment and appreciate the beauty of nature.

I was particularly impressed by the 1400 pine trees spread throughout the garden. Some of them, like the Neagari Goyo-matsu Pine, have been growing since the Edo era, showcasing incredible artistry and care. It's amazing to think about the generations of gardeners who have dedicated their lives to maintaining this tranquil paradise.

Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was captivated by the intricate details and the way the light played across the water and foliage. She snapped countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this serene landscape. I tried my best to capture some of the beauty with my camera as well, hoping to do justice to the stunning scenery.

We took a moment to relax at one of the teahouses, Kikugetsu-tei, and enjoyed some matcha while gazing at the garden. It was a truly luxurious experience, imagining feudal lords of generations past enjoying the same view. Sipping the tea, I felt a deep connection to the history and culture of this place.

Shikoku Village: A Journey Through Time

After immersing ourselves in the beauty of Ritsurin Garden, we headed to Shikoku Village, an open-air museum showcasing traditional homes and buildings from around Shikoku Island. It’s like stepping back in time, wandering through meticulously preserved structures that offer a glimpse into the island's past.

As we entered Shikoku Village, we were greeted by a charming landscape of relocated and restored buildings. The village features homes and daily necessities from the Edo to Taisho eras, providing a tangible sense of history. It was fascinating to see how people lived in Shikoku centuries ago.

Lena and I explored various workshops, including those for making paper, sugar, and soy sauce. It was incredible to witness these traditional crafts still being practiced today. I found myself particularly drawn to the paper-making workshop, where I learned about the intricate process of creating washi paper.

The village is set in a beautiful natural environment, with hiking trails connecting the different buildings. Despite not being fully prepared for a hike, we managed to explore most of the village, taking advantage of the resting spots along the way. Fortunately, the weather was pleasant, making the walk even more enjoyable.

One of the highlights was discovering contemporary artworks integrated into the historical setting as part of the Setouchi Triennale. It was a unique blend of old and new, showcasing the region's artistic spirit. We also visited a modern museum building designed by Tadao Ando, adding another layer of architectural appreciation to the experience.

For lunch, we decided to try the Yuzuan Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its quirky decor and local cuisine. The interior was filled with interesting objects and statues, creating a whimsical atmosphere. We enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties, including what they claimed was the biggest fried shrimp in Japan! It was definitely an experience to remember.

The pub had a cozy and inviting ambiance, with friendly staff and a good selection of drinks. We enjoyed a couple of beers and chatted with some locals, learning more about the city and its culture. It was a great way to relax and soak in the local atmosphere.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we grabbed dinner at Dining Room Hibari. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of local dishes. We enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh seafood and local vegetables, savoring the flavors of Shikoku.
