Echoes of the Past in Iya Valley

Today, Lena and I ventured deep into the heart of Shikoku Island, a place where time seems to slow down and the whispers of ancient history linger in the air. Our destination was the Iya Valley, a remote and mountainous region known for its stunning natural beauty and its iconic vine bridges. I was particularly excited, as I had read about this place for years and seen countless photos, but nothing truly prepares you for the experience of being there.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant&Cafe Riina. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of pickled vegetables. Lena, ever the fan of pastries, chose a flaky croissant and a strong cup of coffee. Fuelled up, we set off towards the Iya Valley.

The drive itself was an adventure. The roads snaked and wound their way through dense forests and alongside crystal-clear rivers. Every turn revealed a new vista, a more breathtaking view than the last. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the natural landscape. It reminded me of the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, albeit with a distinctly Japanese flavor. I found myself missing surfing back home, but the mountains of Shikoku were quickly winning me over.

Our first stop was the famed Vine Bridge in the Iya Valley. As we approached, I could see the bridge stretching across the Iya River, a delicate-looking structure of woven vines suspended high above the water. It looked like something straight out of an Indiana Jones movie. We paid the admission fee and cautiously stepped onto the bridge.

The experience was exhilarating, to say the least. The bridge swayed with every step, and the gaps between the wooden slats offered a dizzying view of the river below. Lena, who usually isn't afraid of heights, gripped my hand tightly as we made our way across. I couldn't help but grin, feeling a thrill of adventure mixed with a healthy dose of respect for the ingenuity of the people who built this bridge so long ago.

In the heart of Iya Valley, history isn't just something you read about; it's something you feel with every step you take across the swaying vine bridge.

According to local legend, the vine bridges were originally built by the Heike clan, who sought refuge in the Iya Valley after their defeat in the Genpei War. The bridges were designed to be easily cut down in case of enemy pursuit, a testament to the resourcefulness and resilience of these ancient warriors. As I walked across the bridge, I imagined what it must have been like to live in this remote valley centuries ago, cut off from the rest of the world and relying on these precarious structures to navigate the rugged terrain.

After crossing the bridge, we explored the surrounding area, discovering a beautiful waterfall called Biwa Waterfall. The cascading water created a refreshing mist, and the sound of the falls was incredibly soothing. Lena took some amazing photos, capturing the beauty of the natural landscape. We also passed by a restaurant, which served grilled river fish, but we decided to hold out for lunch in a local eatery.

For lunch, we stopped at Eki-mae Shokudo, a small restaurant near a train station. I decided to try the local specialty which was a hearty bowl of udon noodles with mountain vegetables. Lena opted for a tempura set, complete with crispy fried shrimp and vegetables. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

After lunch, we visited Island Mishima, a local shop where we browsed a variety of local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a small wooden carving of a tanuki, a mythical creature said to bring good luck. Lena found a beautiful hand-painted fan, which she plans to use as a decoration in our apartment in Berlin.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Osusowake Shokudo Mado for dinner. This restaurant was recommended to us by a local we met earlier in the day. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the valley, and the atmosphere was cozy and intimate. We shared a selection of local dishes, including grilled chicken, pickled vegetables, and a savory rice dish. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the conversation flowed easily as we recounted the highlights of our day.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the unique charm and beauty of the Iya Valley. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience. The vine bridge was definitely a highlight, but the entire valley is filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this remote corner of Japan with Lena by my side.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Ōboke Gorge and visit the Ryugado Museum [Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I am excited to see what other hidden treasures Shikoku Island has in store for us. I think after the museum, we can relax a bit in the tone dining bar.

For now, I'm signing off from the Iya Valley, feeling a sense of peace and contentment. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
