Chasing Waterfalls and Exploring Ancient Valleys

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the raw, untouched beauty of Shikoku. Leaving behind the comforts of city life, Lena and I ventured deep into the heart of the island, eager to witness the majestic Todoroki Falls and explore the mysterious Iya Valley. It was a day of breathtaking landscapes, thrilling adventures, and delicious local flavors that truly captured the essence of this hidden gem.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Kohanyu. Fuelled up, we set our GPS for Todoroki Falls. The drive itself was an experience, winding through lush, green hills and past quaint villages that seemed untouched by time. As we approached the falls, the air grew cooler and the sound of rushing water filled the air. The anticipation was palpable.

Todoroki Falls is known as Shikoku's largest waterfall and is also one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. The crystal-clear Kaifu River crashes 58 meters over a cliff, creating a stunning spectacle. The mist from the falls kissed our faces as we stood in awe of its power and beauty. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment. Lena, ever the nature enthusiast, was already planning our next hike in the area. Apparently, there are 98 other waterfalls to discover around Todoroki Falls.

After spending a good hour soaking in the beauty of Todoroki Falls, we hopped back in the car and set off towards the Iya Valley. This remote, mountainous valley is known as one of Japan's hidden regions. As we drove deeper into the valley, the landscape transformed into steep mountain slopes and deep, rocky gorges. The roads became narrower and winding, adding to the sense of adventure.

Driving through the winding roads of the Iya valley and standing on the edge of a deep gorge watching the river rush by, you can't help but feel like you've been let in on a well-kept secret.

The Iya Valley has a fascinating history. Because of its remoteness, it served as a refuge for members of the Taira Clan who escaped to the region after losing the Gempei War in the late 12th century. Today, their descendants can still be found in the area, adding to the valley's mystique.

One of the highlights of the Iya Valley is its vine bridges, known as Kazurabashi. These bridges were once the only way to cross the river and are made from woven vines suspended high above the water. Only three remain today. We decided to visit the Iya Kazurabashi, the most famous and easily accessible of the three.

Crossing the Iya Kazurabashi was an exhilarating experience. The bridge swayed with each step, and the gaps between the vines offered a dizzying view of the river below. Lena, fearless as always, walked across with a smile, while I clung to the ropes for dear life. It was a true test of courage, but the sense of accomplishment afterwards was well worth it. I can say that it is not advisable for people with a fear of heights.

After our thrilling bridge crossing, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Eki-mae Shokudo, a charming restaurant in Otoyo known for its authentic Japanese regional cuisine. I had a delicious bowl of ramen, while Lena opted for a traditional set meal with rice, miso soup, and grilled fish. The food was simple but incredibly flavorful, made with fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect way to refuel after our adventures.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we continued our exploration of the Iya Valley. We made a stop at the peeing boy statue, a quirky landmark perched 200 meters above sea level. The statue is said to have been erected because local boys and tourists couldn't resist the urge to prove their manliness by relieving themselves off the cliff.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back towards Miyoshi, where we planned to have dinner. We chose Osusowake Shokudo Mado, a unique cafeteria in Kami City known for its heartwarming concept of sharing and community. The name Osusowake means to share something with others, and the cafeteria embodies this spirit by sourcing ingredients from local farmers and offering affordable meals to children and families.

The atmosphere at Osusowake Shokudo Mado was warm and inviting. We ordered a variety of dishes, including chicken piccata, seasonal vegetables, and rice bowls. The food was delicious and comforting, and it felt good to support a place that was making a positive impact on the community. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, was incredibly kind and welcoming, sharing stories about the cafeteria's mission and the people it served.

For a nightcap, we decided to check out tone dining bar in Miyoshi. This cozy bar had a great selection of local beers and creative cocktails. I tried a unique concoction made with sake and yuzu, while Lena enjoyed a glass of local plum wine. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and we chatted with the bartender about the local culture and attractions.

As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the majestic Todoroki Falls to the thrilling Iya Valley and the heartwarming Osusowake Shokudo Mado, Shikoku had truly captured our hearts. It was a day of adventure, discovery, and connection, reminding us of the simple joys of travel and the beauty of human connection.

Tomorrow, we are heading to Shikoku Karst and the Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall & Anpanman Museum. I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow brings!

I am also starting to think about what I forgot to pack for this trip. I really wish I had brought an adapter for Japanese outlets and an extra memory card for my camera. I am going to have to get those tomorrow.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we grabbed a late-night snack at a local convenience store. I couldn't resist trying a melon pan, a sweet bread with a crispy, cookie-like crust. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Back at our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Shikoku had surprised us with its natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. It was a reminder that the best travel experiences are often found in the unexpected places, far away from the crowds and the tourist traps. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what other hidden gems Shikoku had in store for us. I am sure Lena is already planning our next adventure.

I am also thinking about my job back in Berlin. It is nice to get away from the computer screen for a while and experience the real world. Maybe I should consider a career change when I get back. But for now, I am just going to enjoy the moment and soak in the beauty of Shikoku.

The real journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

I am so grateful to be sharing this experience with Lena. She is the perfect travel partner, always up for anything and always seeing the best in every situation. I love her adventurous spirit and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I am so lucky to have her in my life.

As I close my eyes, I can still hear the sound of the rushing water, feel the sway of the vine bridge, and taste the delicious flavors of Shikoku. It was a day I will never forget, a day that reminded me of the beauty and wonder of the world and the importance of cherishing every moment. I hope that my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures, to seek out the hidden gems, and to embrace the unexpected.

Good night from Shikoku! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that today is May 15th. I wonder if there are any local festivals happening in Shikoku today. I will have to do some research and see if we can catch one before we leave. That would be an amazing experience!
