Matsuyama's Charms: A Day of Discovery

Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Matsuyama. Lena and I explored a historic castle, soaked in Japan's oldest hot spring, and savored local flavors. It was a day of contrasts – from the stoic strength of Matsuyama Castle to the soothing waters of Dogo Onsen – and I'm excited to share our experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Inonakanokawazu. The traditional Japanese breakfast set the tone for a day steeped in culture. Fuelled up, we made our way to the imposing Matsuyama Castle.

Conquering Matsuyama Castle

Perched atop Mount Katsuyama, Matsuyama Castle is a sight to behold. We opted for the scenic route, taking the ropeway up the mountain. The panoramic views of Matsuyama sprawling beneath us were breathtaking. As we ascended, I couldn't help but think about the generations who had defended this fortress. It’s amazing to think that this castle is one of only twelve original castle keeps in Japan that have survived since the Edo period.

Exploring the castle grounds was like stepping back in time. The intricate stonework, hidden gates, and towering walls spoke volumes about the castle's strategic importance. Inside the keep, we explored exhibits showcasing samurai armor, weaponry, and historical blueprints. Lena was particularly fascinated by the displays of haiku poetry, a nod to the region's rich literary history.

A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.

The views from the top of the castle keep were simply stunning. We could see the city stretching out towards the Seto Inland Sea and the distant Shikoku Mountains. It was easy to imagine the feudal lords of the past surveying their domain from this very spot. The castle grounds are also known for their cherry blossoms, and while we were a bit past peak bloom, there were still hints of pink adding to the beauty.

Before leaving the area, we took a leisurely stroll through Shiroyama Park at the base of the mountain. The park offered a peaceful respite and even more stunning views of the castle. We also explored the Ninomaru Historical Garden, imagining what life must have been like in this secondary area of the castle.

A Soothing Soak at Dogo Onsen

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for some relaxation at Dogo Onsen Main Building.

This ancient hot spring is said to be one of the oldest in Japan, with a history stretching back some 3,000 years. Legend has it that the waters healed a deity's illness in ancient times. The grand, three-story wooden building is an iconic symbol of Matsuyama, and I could see why it’s such a popular destination.

The Dogo Onsen is said to have inspired the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's film 'Spirited Away'. While I can see the resemblance, the real experience is so much more tangible. We wandered through the labyrinthine passageways, soaking up the lively, yet relaxed atmosphere.

We chose one of the more affordable bathing options, which allowed us access to the main bath. The mineral-rich waters were incredibly soothing, and I could feel my muscles relaxing after our morning of exploration. After our bath, we indulged in 'Botchan dango,' a sweet dumpling treat that's a local specialty.

Local Flavors and Hidden Gems

For lunch, we ventured to Kohanyu, a charming restaurant that promised a taste of local cuisine.

The menu highlighted regional ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. I opted for a set lunch featuring fresh seafood and local vegetables – a true delight. Lena enjoyed a vegetarian dish that was equally flavorful.

In the afternoon, we explored Shikoku Shop 88, a treasure trove of local products.

From regional snacks to crafts, the shop offered a glimpse into the diverse culture of Shikoku. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs for friends and family back in Berlin. Lena, ever the practical one, found a beautiful handcrafted bowl for our kitchen.

As evening approached, we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at Tosa Rokkon.

This restaurant is known for its modern take on traditional flavors, and we were not disappointed. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff was incredibly friendly. We savored each dish, reflecting on the day's adventures.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the streets of Matsuyama. The city was alive with activity, and we soaked up the vibrant atmosphere. We stumbled upon a small concert at Hasucafe featuring Kenta Hayashi. The music was lively, and the crowd was enthusiastic. It was the perfect way to end our day.

As I sit here writing, I'm filled with a sense of contentment. Matsuyama has charmed us with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Tomorrow, we're off to explore the Todoroki Falls and Iya Valley. I'm excited to see what adventures await us in the heart of Shikoku. I'm also making a mental note to buy an adapter, so I can charge all my devices! I completely forgot about it when packing in Berlin.

Tomorrow's Adventure Awaits

Tomorrow promises a venture into the wilder side of Shikoku, as we plan to visit the Todoroki Falls and explore the remote Iya Valley. After breakfast at Kohanyu, we will head out for a day of hiking and natural beauty. I've heard the Iya Valley is particularly stunning, with its vine bridges and dramatic landscapes. I'm looking forward to sharing those experiences with you all soon!

I'm also excited to try some new restaurants. We plan to have lunch at Eki-mae Shokudo and dinner at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. I'm looking forward to experiencing the local cuisine in these new places. Before heading to bed, we might check out the tone dining bar for a nightcap.

It's nights like these that I am thankful for Lena and our shared love for exploration. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
