Today was all about diving deep into the cultural heart of Tetouan. From modern art that challenged my perspectives to ancient artifacts whispering stories of civilizations long past, Tetouan offered a rich tapestry of experiences that Lena and I, along with our friends, were eager to explore. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with history and art in ways that simply aren't possible from my Berlin apartment.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at HERMANOS. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, a perfect start before diving into a day of exploration. It reminded me of the simple, comforting breakfasts back in Turrialba, Costa Rica, where the day always started with the promise of adventure. It's funny how food can transport you across continents and evoke such vivid memories. I had read online that they serve a complimentary local cuisine breakfast, which made the experience even better!

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to the Tetuan Modern Art Center. Housed in what was once the city's railway station, the building itself is a piece of art, blending New Arab style architecture with modern sensibilities. The transformation of a transportation hub into a cultural complex is a testament to Tetouan's commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing contemporary expression. The center is a symbol of the artistic memory shared between Morocco and Spain. Inside, we wandered through the exhibition rooms, each dedicated to different generations of artists from northern Morocco. I was particularly drawn to the works of the first generation, led by Mariano Bertucci, the founder of the first school of fine arts in Morocco. His pieces resonated with a sense of tradition and innovation, a theme that seemed to echo throughout the entire center. The center displays over 200 paintings and 19 sculptures, representing the artistic experience that Tetouan has hosted throughout the history of Moroccan visual arts.

The narrow, winding streets, a UNESCO World Heritage site, were a maze of vibrant colors, sounds, and smells. Every corner revealed a new aspect of Tetouan's rich heritage, from the whitewashed buildings with their colorful tiles to the intricate wooden doors that adorned each home. As we wandered deeper into the Medina, the tantalizing aromas of local delicacies wafted through the air, tempting us to sample traditional dishes like tagine and couscous. The bustling souks were a feast for the senses, with local artisans displaying their crafts, from handmade pottery to exquisite textiles. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs, each a tangible reminder of our journey through this enchanting city. It was easy to get lost in the labyrinthine streets, but that was part of the charm. With every wrong turn, we discovered hidden gems – a quiet courtyard, a bustling marketplace, a friendly face eager to share a story. The Medina was more than just a collection of buildings; it was a living, breathing testament to Tetouan's rich history and culture. I made sure to wear comfortable shoes, as I had read online that the Medina's streets can be uneven and winding.

After working up an appetite exploring the Medina, we stopped for lunch at Restaurant populaire. The name says it all – a local favorite serving up hearty, traditional Moroccan fare. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists alike gathered to enjoy a midday meal. I opted for the tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables that was bursting with flavor. Lena, ever the adventurous foodie, tried the couscous, a staple of Moroccan cuisine. We shared our dishes, savoring each bite and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere around us. It was a simple meal, but it was one of the most memorable of the trip – a true taste of Tetouan's culinary heritage.

In the afternoon, we visited the Archeological Museum, eager to delve into the ancient history of the region. The museum's collection spans from prehistoric times to the Islamic era, showcasing artifacts from various sites in northern Morocco. As we walked through the exhibits, I was struck by the continuity of human experience. The tools, pottery, and art on display were tangible reminders of the people who had lived and thrived in this region for centuries. The museum contains artifacts from three different eras: prehistoric, antique, and Islamic, from several sites and monuments of northern Morocco, in particular Lixus, Kaf Taht L'ghar, M'zora, Tamuda, and Ksar Es Sghir. I found myself particularly drawn to the Roman artifacts, remnants of a time when this region was part of a vast empire. It's humbling to stand in the presence of such history, to realize that we are just one small chapter in a much larger story. The figurine collection that is on display is extremely important as most of the figurines date back to first century A.D.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Restaurant Terrasse Djebli. The restaurant's terrace offered stunning views of the city, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. The menu featured a mix of Moroccan and international dishes, but we opted for the traditional fare, eager to savor one last taste of Moroccan cuisine. As we ate, we reflected on the day's adventures, sharing our favorite moments and discoveries. The terrace seating offered a breathtaking view of the Rif Mountains, making it an ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploring the city. The restaurant is particularly famous for its grilled meats, which are marinated to perfection and served alongside flavorful dips and breads. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day – a reminder of the beauty and richness that travel brings into our lives.

Before heading back to our riad, we made a quick stop at B & H Art Shop. Though I wasn't necessarily looking to buy anything, I always enjoy browsing local art shops, getting a sense of the artistic pulse of a city. The shop was filled with a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and crafts, each reflecting the unique cultural heritage of Tetouan. It was inspiring to see the passion and creativity of the local artists, their works a testament to the enduring power of art. I ended up buying a small painting, a vibrant depiction of the Medina that will serve as a lasting reminder of our time in Tetouan.

Tomorrow, we're venturing into the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve and Grande Cascade D'akchour, trading the city streets for the tranquility of nature. I'm looking forward to the change of pace, to breathing in the fresh mountain air and exploring the natural beauty of this region. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, to let the art, history, and culture of Tetouan settle into my soul.
