Finding the Heart of Chefchaouen

Today, I truly felt like I connected with Chefchaouen. It wasn't just about seeing the sights; it was about experiencing the soul of this blue city. From panoramic views to hidden corners, every moment felt like a discovery. I'm excited to share the highlights of our day, filled with history, culture, and of course, plenty of that iconic blue.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Chez Aziz, conveniently located at our Maison D'hôtes Afassi. The spread was fantastic, a mix of local pastries and fresh fruit, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Lena particularly enjoyed the traditional Moroccan pancakes, while I couldn't get enough of the strong, sweet mint tea. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to find the City View Point. The walk itself was an experience, navigating through the maze-like streets, each turn revealing a new shade of blue. I swear, my camera was working overtime trying to capture it all. The view from the top was breathtaking. From our vantage point, the entire city unfolded before us, a sea of blue rooftops cascading down the hillside. It was the perfect spot to get our bearings and appreciate the sheer beauty of Chefchaouen.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its color, but in the stories etched into its walls and the warmth of its people.

Next on our list was the Kasbah, a historic fortress that stands as a testament to Chefchaouen's rich past. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. The tranquil gardens provided a welcome escape from the bustling streets, and the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the city's history and culture. I was particularly intrigued by the exhibits showcasing traditional crafts and costumes. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was captivated by the intricate tilework and architectural details.

After the Kasbah, we ventured into El Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. It was a stark contrast to the blue-washed streets we had grown accustomed to, with its own unique character and charm. The architecture was noticeably different, with many buildings featuring intricate ironwork and ornate balconies. Wandering through its narrow alleyways, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like for the Jewish community that once called this place home. It's a reminder that Chefchaouen, like many places, is a melting pot of cultures and traditions.

Lunchtime found us at Restaurant Morisco, a popular spot known for its delicious Moroccan cuisine and stunning views of Place Outa el Hammam. We snagged a table on the terrace and ordered a feast of tagines, couscous, and grilled meats. The food was incredible, bursting with flavor and spices. Lena, being a vegetarian, was delighted to find several delicious plant-based options on the menu. As we savored our meal, we watched the world go by below, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the square.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Sunset at sunset, a bar known for its panoramic views and relaxed vibe. We ordered a round of mint tea and settled in to watch the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. As the stars began to twinkle above us, we raised our glasses in a toast to Chefchaouen, a city that had captured our hearts with its beauty and charm. The bar was filled with fellow travelers, all eager to share their experiences and recommendations. It's moments like these that remind me why I love traveling – the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life and share in the joy of discovery.

Tonight, we dined at Restaurant Dar El Salam, a recommendation from a local we met at Sunset at sunset. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina, offering a more intimate and authentic dining experience. The food was exceptional, some of the best we've had so far. I opted for the traditional tagine with lamb and prunes, while Lena went for a vegetarian couscous dish. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of sweet and savory. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with soft lighting and traditional Moroccan music playing in the background.

As I sit here writing this, reflecting on our day, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Chefchaouen with my friends. It's a city that has a way of captivating you, drawing you in with its beauty and charm. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Hero Eagle, Darb Limoun, and Bab El Ain, continuing our exploration of this enchanting blue city. I'm particularly excited to visit Bab El Ain, as I've heard it's a great spot to witness local life and soak in the atmosphere of the city. And of course, we'll be sure to stop by Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop, as Lena is keen on finding a unique souvenir to take back home to Berlin. I'm also looking forward to trying Restaurant Triana for breakfast, Tissemlal for lunch, and The Magic Lamp House of Aladin for dinner, as I've heard they all offer delicious and authentic Moroccan cuisine.

Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to jot down some notes for tomorrow's adventure. I'm determined to find the perfect angle to capture the essence of Bab El Ain, and I'm already envisioning a stunning shot of Lena admiring the copper lamps. I also made a mental note to pack my travel adapter, as I realized I had forgotten it at home. Luckily, Lena had one with her, but it's a reminder to always double-check my packing list before leaving for a trip. As I closed my eyes, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring even more adventures in this magical blue city.
