A Fond Farewell to Chefchaouen

As the sun sets on my final day in Chefchaouen, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey this blue city has offered. It's hard to believe that nine days have already flown by since Lena and I, along with our friends, arrived in this enchanting Moroccan town. From the moment we stepped into the maze-like medina, painted in every shade of blue imaginable, I knew this trip would be something special. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of Chefchaouen's unique charm before our departure.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda. The aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air as we indulged in traditional dishes, fueling up for our final day of exploration. I savored every bite, knowing I'd miss the authentic flavors of this beautiful country. Restaurant Lalla Messaouda offered authentic Moroccan cuisine. I enjoyed the Moroccan lamb.

After breakfast, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through Park Sidi Abdelhamid. The park offered a panoramic view of Chefchaouen, allowing us to appreciate the city's unique architecture and stunning natural surroundings one last time. The fresh air and peaceful atmosphere were a welcome respite from the bustling medina. It was a moment of tranquility that I'll cherish forever. I took some great photos of the city from there.

Next on our list was a visit to the Tetuan Tannery. While not exactly in Chefchaouen (Tetouan is a city not too far away), it was worth the short trip to witness the ancient art of leather production. The vibrant colors and pungent smells were a sensory overload, but the experience was truly fascinating. Seeing the tanners at work, using techniques passed down through generations, gave me a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship involved. It reminded me of visiting Turrialba back in Costa Rica and seeing the artisans there.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in the transformative power of experiencing different cultures and perspectives.

For lunch, we opted for Tissemlal, a restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The menu was full of tempting options, but I decided to try the tagine, a classic Moroccan dish cooked in a conical clay pot. The flavors were rich and complex, and the tender meat simply melted in my mouth. Tissemlal uses fresh, local ingredients from their organic farm. It’s a farm-to-table experience that really highlights the fresh flavors of the region. Lena enjoyed a vegetarian dish and gave it rave reviews.

After lunch, we decided to explore Dar Antonio Chefchaouen, a traditional Moroccan house that has been converted into a guesthouse. The intricate tilework, colorful textiles, and cozy courtyard were a feast for the eyes. It was a perfect example of the unique architecture that makes Chefchaouen so special. I learned that Dar Antonio is known for its hospitality and beautiful decor. It’s a great example of traditional Moroccan architecture and design.

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves seeking a refreshing drink at Restaurante Fatila. We relaxed with some local mint tea, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the last moments of our Chefchaouen adventure. I enjoyed some local mint tea, which was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the trip.

For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Restaurant Jbaria, known for its stunning terrace and traditional Moroccan dishes. As we sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and panoramic views of the city, we savored every bite of our meal. The food was delicious, but the company and the atmosphere were even better. It was a perfect ending to a perfect trip. The restaurant has a beautiful terrace with a peaceful atmosphere. I tried bissara and lentils, which were delicious.
