Finding Serenity in Santorini's Heart

Today was a beautiful blend of history, spirituality, and gastronomy. Greta and I explored some of Santorini's lesser-known treasures, offering a refreshing change of pace from the bustling tourist spots. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to discover the soul of a place, one hidden gem at a time.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ftelos Brewery Santorini - MALT Restaurant. I've always been intrigued by unique dining experiences, and this place definitely delivered. The combination of a brewery and a restaurant was unexpected, but it worked wonderfully. The setting was charming, with a magnificent view. I opted for a traditional Greek breakfast, while Greta chose a lighter, more continental option. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to start our day.

After breakfast, we set off to explore Panagia Episkopi, the oldest church in Santorini. As an ESL teacher, I'm fascinated by history and cultural exchange, and this church was a treasure trove of both. Built in the 11th century, it has withstood numerous invasions and earthquakes. Reaching it via a bumpy road, we admired its orange tile roof and faded façade, a stark contrast to the more common blue-domed churches on the island. Inside, the church was adorned with frescoes and icons dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. I was particularly moved by the icon of the Virgin Mary, a testament to the enduring power of faith.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, away from the well-trodden paths.

Next on our itinerary was the Spring of Zoodochos Pigi. This hidden gem is located on the road from Kamari to Ancient Thira. The natural spring in the cave is the only source of fresh water on the island of Santorini. The walk to the cave was lovely, following a narrow path that led straight to it. Inside, we marveled at the stalactites and stalagmites, and the natural basin filled with fresh spring water. It was a truly serene experience, a reminder of the simple beauty of nature. The spring is named after the church that is found at the entrance of the cave.

After our spiritual and natural explorations, it was time for some retail therapy. We headed to Santorini Shopping, eager to discover local crafts and souvenirs. The shops in Santorini are quite different from the average touristy souvenir shops. We found a variety of handmade items, stylish clothes, shoes, and accessories. I was particularly drawn to the jewelry made of lava, a unique reminder of Santorini's volcanic origins. Greta, on the other hand, was captivated by the local art galleries, where she found a beautiful ceramic object to take home.

For lunch, we decided to try Karma Greek Restaurant. Located in Oia, this restaurant offers a culinary journey that merges tradition with inventive elements. The atmosphere was serene, and the food was amazing. We started with the three-dip combination, a perfect introduction to the rich and vibrant flavors of Greek cuisine. For our main course, I opted for the Mastelo Lamb, while Greta chose the Greek stuffed calamari. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to using high-quality, locally procured ingredients.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Esperisma Bar-Restaurant for dinner. Perched atop the cliffs of the Caldera in Fira, this restaurant offers breathtaking views and a culinary experience to match. The menu showcased fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables, and fragrant herbs. I chose the grilled octopus, while Greta opted for the sea bass. The food was exquisitely executed, and the service was impeccable. We savored every bite, while taking in the stunning sunset views. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on our experiences today, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. Whether it's exploring an ancient church, discovering a hidden spring, or savoring a delicious meal, there's beauty to be found in every moment, if we only take the time to look. I'm also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Greta. Traveling with her makes every adventure even more special.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Santo Wines and Estate Argyros, eager to learn more about Santorini's winemaking traditions. We'll also be stopping by Rocka wine sunset bar for a drink, hoping to catch another stunning sunset. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I realize how much Santorini has to offer beyond its famed sunsets and caldera views. It's a place where history, spirituality, and gastronomy intertwine, creating a tapestry of experiences that are both enriching and unforgettable. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation, eager to uncover more of Santorini's hidden treasures.

I also realize that I forgot to pack an adapter for the Greek power outlets and a hat for sun protection. I'll have to remember to buy those tomorrow.

It's moments like these that make me appreciate the beauty of travel – the unexpected discoveries, the shared experiences, and the simple joys of life. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with gratitude for another day well spent, and excitement for the adventures that lie ahead.

Until tomorrow, Santorini!
