Exploring the Enchanting Island of Santorini with My Wife
Day 7: Venturing into Santorini's Volcanic Heart: A Day of Fire and Brimstone
Explore Santorini's volcanic history with a Nea Kameni hike, caldera views, and delightful local flavors. A day of adventure and discovery!
Beneath the Surface
Today, Greta and I embarked on a journey to uncover the fiery heart of Santorini. It was a day filled with volcanic landscapes, breathtaking vistas, and, of course, delicious Greek food. The island continues to surprise us with its blend of natural wonders and cultural richness. Despite some seismic activity earlier in the year, everything felt remarkably stable and safe, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Maestro. Situated conveniently, it was the perfect spot to fuel up before our adventure. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while Greta enjoyed a freshly baked pastry. The strong Greek coffee was just what I needed to kickstart the day. After breakfast, we made our way to the port to catch a boat to Nea Kameni, the volcanic island in the center of the caldera.

The boat ride itself was an experience. The Aegean Sea sparkled under the morning sun, and the views of Santorini from the water were simply stunning. As we approached Nea Kameni, the landscape transformed into a stark, almost lunar scene. The island is a testament to the raw power of nature, a place where you can truly feel the earth's energy.
The hike to the top of the volcanic crater was challenging but rewarding. The path was steep and rocky, and the volcanic soil crunched under our feet. Despite the somewhat barren landscape, there was a strange beauty in the dark, rugged terrain. As we climbed higher, the panoramic views of the caldera became increasingly impressive. I made sure to bring my camera to capture the moment. Greta, ever the historian, read aloud from our guidebook about the island's formation and past eruptions.
To truly appreciate Santorini, you need to feel the heat beneath your feet and witness the vastness of the caldera.
Reaching the summit, we were greeted by the sight of the active volcanic crater. Steam and sulfurous gases rose from the vents, a reminder of the powerful forces still at work beneath the surface. The views from the top were unparalleled – the entire caldera stretched out before us, with the whitewashed villages of Santorini clinging to the cliffs in the distance.
We spent some time exploring the crater and taking photos. I even managed to capture a few shots of Greta with the volcanic landscape as a backdrop. She really has a way of blending into any scenery, making every photo a special one. It's moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to share these adventures with her.
After descending from the volcano, the boat took us to the hot springs for a dip. The water was warm and murky, rich with minerals believed to have therapeutic properties. It was a bit crowded, but we managed to find a spot to relax and soak in the warmth. The experience was both invigorating and soothing, a perfect way to unwind after the hike.
Back on the mainland, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Xeporto for lunch. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. We sat at a table overlooking the caldera, enjoying the stunning views as we savored our meal. I ordered the grilled octopus, a local specialty, while Greta opted for a traditional Greek salad. The food was fresh and flavorful, a true taste of Santorini.

In the late afternoon, we took our time strolling along the caldera, soaking in the views and enjoying the sea breeze. It was so relaxing just walking around, holding hands, and looking around at the landscape and the many different colours. We talked about our experience on Nea Kameni, sharing our favorite moments and reflecting on the island's unique beauty. I couldn’t help but think about the scientists monitoring the volcano and the importance of understanding the earth's natural processes. It’s a humbling thought, knowing that such power lies beneath this idyllic paradise.
As evening approached, we made our way to Theofanis food experience for dinner. Located in Akrotiri, this restaurant promised an authentic Greek culinary experience. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with traditional music playing in the background. We started with a selection of mezze, including tzatziki, dolmades, and spanakopita. For our main courses, I chose the lamb chops, cooked to perfection, while Greta savored the fresh seafood pasta. The meal was a feast for the senses, a true celebration of Greek cuisine.

Theofanis offered something special: plate smashing. I had heard about this tradition, and it was an exciting experience. There’s something cathartic about smashing plates after a delicious meal! It definitely added a unique touch to the evening.
After dinner, we decided to check out Lux Bar Santorini for a nightcap. The bar was lively and buzzing with energy. We ordered a couple of cocktails and sat outside, enjoying the warm evening air and the vibrant atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery. I even managed to learn a few new German idioms from Greta, blending our cultures in a fun and spontaneous way.

As I sit here writing this, reflecting on our day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Santorini has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding you of the beauty and power of nature. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Panagia Episkopi and the Spring of Zoodochos Pigi, continuing our journey of discovery on this enchanting island. I’m also looking forward to visiting Ftelos Brewery Santorini - MALT Restaurant for breakfast. Who knows what other adventures await us?
And as a final note, I should remember to buy an adapter for the Greek power outlets. It would be a shame not to be able to share the pictures I take with my camera, or to be unable to charge it.
Despite the minor earthquake concerns earlier in the year, today was nothing short of magical. The island felt safe, welcoming, and full of life. It’s a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people of Santorini, who have rebuilt and welcomed visitors with open arms.
The local authorities have taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of everyone on the island. I am grateful for their hard work and dedication. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Good night from Santorini!
