Summiting Húsavík and Sipping Spirits

Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Húsavík, a town that continues to surprise me with its blend of adventure and tranquility. I set out to explore the landscapes that define this corner of Iceland, and ended the day with a taste of local nightlife that was as unique as the scenery.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nesti, a cozy spot known for its traditional Icelandic flavors. Fuelling up with some fresh pastries and strong coffee, I prepared myself for a morning hike. I decided to tackle the Húsavík Mountain Trailhead, a path recommended for its panoramic views. The crisp winter air nipped at my cheeks as I started my ascent, the trail winding its way up the mountainside.

The landscape was a stunning contrast of snow-dusted rocks and icy patches, a true testament to Iceland’s rugged charm. As I climbed higher, the views became increasingly breathtaking. From the summit, I could see the entire town of Húsavík, the glittering bay, and the distant Kinnarfjöll mountains. It was a moment of pure serenity, standing there above the world, feeling the wind and witnessing the vast expanse of Iceland's natural beauty.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that take you to new heights, both literally and figuratively.

After descending from the mountain, I made my way to Húsavík Harbor, eager to experience the heart of Iceland's whale-watching capital. The harbor was bustling with activity, boats bobbing gently in the water, and the air filled with the cries of seagulls. I took a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, soaking in the maritime atmosphere and watching the fishermen prepare their boats for the next excursion. The colorful buildings that lined the harbor added a touch of warmth to the wintery scene.

For lunch, I stopped by Röff bistro, a local spot known for its delicious fish and chips. The bistro had a relaxed vibe, and the food was exactly what I needed after a morning of hiking. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the simple pleasures of travel – good food, stunning scenery, and a sense of peace.

As evening approached, I decided to immerse myself in Húsavík's nightlife. My destination was Jaja Ding Dong, a bar made famous by the movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The bar was lively and welcoming, filled with Eurovision memorabilia and a playful atmosphere. I ordered a classic gin and tonic and soaked in the ambiance, surrounded by laughter, music, and a sense of Icelandic hospitality.

I even took a leap and tried the infamous fermented shark, served with a shot of Brennivín. It was definitely an experience – one that I won't soon forget! The rye version of Brennivín made the shark slightly more tolerable. To my surprise, right next to the bar, I spotted the Elves' Alert sign and some whimsical elf houses, a nod to Icelandic folklore and the movie.

For dinner, I ventured to Naustið, a family-run restaurant known for its fresh seafood and traditional Icelandic cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, old-fashioned interior, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for their signature fish soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

Before heading back to Fosshotel Husavik, I strolled along the harbor one last time, watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky. The ethereal glow painted the landscape in shades of green and purple, a magical display that left me in awe. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with natural beauty, culinary delights, and a taste of Icelandic culture.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Húsavík's cultural side with a visit to the Húsavík Eurovision Exhibition and Grenjaðarstaður - the Old Turfhouse. I’m looking forward to uncovering more hidden gems in this charming town. It’s funny, before I came here, Greta teased me relentlessly about my fascination with Eurovision, but now I can’t wait to tell her all about it!

As I reflect on my day, I realize that Húsavík is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. The combination of stunning landscapes, warm hospitality, and unique cultural experiences makes it a place I'll cherish forever. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this corner of Iceland and share my adventures with you all.

Until tomorrow!
