Chasing Giants in Húsavík

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a day where the raw beauty of Iceland truly sunk its teeth into my soul. From the moment I woke up, I knew adventure was on the horizon. It's day four of my solo trip, and Húsavík has already exceeded all expectations. The crisp Arctic air, the promise of whales, and the charming town itself—it all combines to create an experience that's both exhilarating and deeply peaceful.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Heimabakarí. Or at least, that was the plan. Sadly, I arrived to find the place closed. Apparently, it has closed down due to financial difficulties. It's a shame, as I was looking forward to trying their pastries. Instead, I grabbed a quick bite at the hotel and headed straight for the harbor, eager to start my whale watching tour with Gentle Giants - Husavik Whale Watching.

The anticipation was palpable as I boarded the boat. Bundled in warm coveralls provided by Gentle Giants, I felt ready to brave the Icelandic sea. The boat, a beautiful old oak vessel, had a certain charm that immediately put me at ease. As we set off, the guide shared stories about the bay and the types of whales we might encounter. The excitement grew with each passing moment.

It wasn't long before we spotted our first whale – a magnificent humpback. The sheer size and grace of these creatures is awe-inspiring. I watched, mesmerized, as it breached the surface, its massive tail rising from the water before disappearing back into the depths. The experience was surreal, a moment where I felt truly connected to nature. We even saw a Minke whale and some Harbour porpoises.

Witnessing these gentle giants in their natural habitat was a humbling reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet.

After the whale watching tour, I was eager to soak in more of Húsavík's beauty. I made my way to the Husavik Panoramic View.

The drive up was scenic, and the view from the top was simply breathtaking. The town of Húsavík spread out before me, a colorful tapestry against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the vast expanse of the North Atlantic. I spent a good hour there, just taking in the scenery and capturing photos. The crisp air and the stunning vista were invigorating.

For lunch, I decided to try Grill 66.

It's a cozy little place known for its sandwiches. I opted for the local fish sandwich, which was delicious. The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect spot to recharge after a morning of whale watching and sightseeing.

With my belly full and my spirits high, I decided to explore the local shops. I stopped by Norðlenska.

A shop that sells local meats and other Icelandic products. I picked up some Húsavíkur hangikjöt (smoked lamb) to take back to Greta in Berlin. I know she'll appreciate a taste of Iceland, especially with Christmas just around the corner. Plus, I'm hoping to try my hand at making some Caribbean-Icelandic fusion dishes when I get back. I'm already imagining jerk-spiced hangikjöt tacos!

As evening approached, I made my way to Salka Restaurant.

Located in one of the oldest buildings in town, the restaurant has a charming and cozy atmosphere. I decided to try their traditional Icelandic lamb dish, which was hearty and flavorful. The perfect way to end a day of exploring.

Reflecting on the day, I felt an immense sense of gratitude. Húsavík has a way of captivating you with its natural beauty and small-town charm. The whale watching experience was unforgettable, the panoramic views were stunning, and the local food was delicious. It's a place that I know I'll carry with me long after I leave.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Húsavík Mountain Trailhead and the Húsavík Harbor. I'm also hoping to check out Jaja Ding Dong Húsavík, a local bar. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery. I can't wait to see what Húsavík has in store for me.

As I sit here, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but smile. This solo trip to Iceland has been exactly what I needed. A chance to reconnect with nature, explore a new culture, and discover a part of myself that I had forgotten. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few German idioms along the way to impress Greta!

The thought of returning to Berlin and sharing these experiences with Greta fills me with joy. Maybe next time, I can convince her to come along. Until then, I'll continue to soak in every moment of this incredible journey.

One thing I did forget to pack was sunglasses. The sun reflecting off the snow and water can be quite intense, even in winter. I'll have to remember to pick up a pair tomorrow. And perhaps a portable phone charger, as my battery is constantly running low from taking so many photos. But these are minor inconveniences in the grand scheme of things. I am, after all, in the whale watching capital of Iceland!

As the day comes to a close, I raise a glass to Húsavík, a town that has captured my heart and soul. May tomorrow bring even more adventures and unforgettable memories.
