Solo Adventure in Húsavík: Exploring Iceland's Whale-Watching Capital
Day 1: A Whale of a Start in Húsavík: Museums, Churches, and Hidden Gems
Discover Húsavík's charm: whale museums, wooden churches, and local crafts. A perfect start to an Icelandic adventure!
First Impressions of the Whale Capital
After a long journey from Berlin, touching down in Húsavík felt like stepping into a different world. The crisp Icelandic air, the quaint town nestled against the bay – it was exactly the kind of immersive experience I was hoping for. Today was all about soaking in the local culture and history, setting the stage for the whale watching adventure that awaits me tomorrow.
My first stop was breakfast at Heimabakarí. This was meant to be a cozy start to the day, but sadly I discovered upon arrival that Heimabakarí has closed down permanently. It appears that the bakery closed its doors last year due to financial difficulties, which is a real shame. I had been looking forward to trying some traditional Icelandic pastries. Instead, I grabbed a coffee and a quick bite at a nearby cafe, making a mental note to explore other local breakfast options tomorrow.
Delving into Marine History
Next, I headed to the Húsavík Whale Museum. As someone fascinated by marine life, this was a must-see. The museum is housed in a large white and grey building that used to be the local slaughterhouse. It was incredible to see the skeletons of various whale species, including a massive blue whale skeleton. The exhibits were informative, detailing the history of whaling in Iceland, whale biology, and the importance of conservation. I spent a good couple of hours here, thoroughly engrossed in learning about these magnificent creatures. It definitely heightened my anticipation for tomorrow's whale watching tour with Salka Whale Watching!

A Spot of Shopping and Local Art
After the museum, I decided to explore the House of Arts and Handcrafts. It was a delightful experience, browsing through locally crafted goods, from intricate jewelry to beautiful ceramics. I even had the chance to chat with some of the artisans, learning about their inspirations and techniques. It's wonderful to see such a vibrant artistic community thriving here in Húsavík. I picked up a few unique souvenirs, feeling good about supporting local talent.

A Moment of Reflection
My afternoon took a serene turn with a visit to the Húsavík Wooden Church. Built in 1907, this charming church stands as a testament to Iceland's architectural heritage. The interior was just as beautiful, with stained glass windows casting a warm light. It was a peaceful spot for reflection, and I took a few moments to appreciate the tranquility before heading out again. I learned that the church was designed by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson and built with wood imported from Norway. Also that the figures in the painting of Lazarus on the altar are based on Húsavík townspeople.

Fish, Chips, and Harbour Views
For lunch, I stopped by Fish and Chips, a small eatery by the harbor. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the chips were perfectly crispy. Eating there while enjoying the view of the harbor was the perfect way to recharge after a busy morning. The staff were welcoming, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great option for budget travelers like myself.

Dinner with a View
As evening approached, I made my way to Gamli Baukur for dinner. This restaurant has been a landmark in Húsavík for centuries, and it's easy to see why. The maritime decor created a cozy atmosphere, and the view of the harbor was simply stunning. I enjoyed a delicious seafood meal, savoring the fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Húsavík.

Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, I'm incredibly excited to embark on a whale watching tour with Salka Whale Watching. I've heard that Húsavík is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, and I can't wait to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. After that, I plan to relax and rejuvenate at the GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths, perhaps even enjoying a drink at the GeoSea Bar. I'm also looking forward to trying out some of the local restaurants, such as Naustið and Röff bistro. It promises to be another unforgettable day in this charming Icelandic town.
As I settle in for the night at Fosshotel Husavik, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Húsavík has already captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings!
