A Day of Icelandic Bliss

Today was nothing short of magical. Húsavík, living up to its reputation as the whale-watching capital, offered a day filled with incredible sights, soothing warmth, and delicious flavors. It was a day that reminded me why I started this solo journey in the first place – to embrace the unexpected and find joy in every moment.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Salka Restaurant. The restaurant is located in one of the oldest buildings in town, built in 1883. I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic breakfast, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect start to the day. Salka Restaurant offers fresh seafood, light courses, pizzas and steaks.

A Whale of a Time

Next on the agenda was the highly anticipated Salka Whale Watching tour. As someone who grew up on a Caribbean island, the ocean has always been a part of my soul, but seeing these gentle giants in their natural habitat was an entirely different experience. The anticipation was palpable as we set sail into the Skjálfandi Bay. The crew was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating facts about the different whale species and their behaviors. Fortunately, Salka Whale Watching is now part of the North Sailing family.
The weather was crisp, but the provided warm overalls and complimentary hot chocolate kept everyone comfortable. It wasn't long before we spotted our first humpback whale. The sheer size and grace of these creatures are awe-inspiring. We watched as it breached the surface, its massive body glistening in the sunlight before disappearing back into the depths. We also saw minke whales and white-beaked dolphins. The tour lasted for three hours.
The experience was more than just sightseeing; it was a profound connection with nature. It reminded me of the importance of conservation and respecting the delicate balance of our ecosystem. I managed to capture some incredible photos, which I can't wait to share with Greta back in Berlin. She would have loved this. I know I'll be boring her with the details of this trip for weeks when I get back, but I know she'll secretly enjoy it.

Lunch with a View

After the exhilarating whale watching tour, I was ready for a warm meal. I headed to Naustið, a family-run seafood restaurant in the heart of Húsavík. The bright yellow wooden house felt like stepping back in time and visiting grandma. I opted for their famous lobster soup and fish skewers, and I can confidently say they lived up to the hype. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the soup was rich and flavorful – the perfect comfort food on a chilly day. Naustið uses the right seafood for each season. The cozy, mid-century mariner interior added to the charm, making it a truly memorable dining experience. I felt right at home, reminiscing about my mother's cooking back in Micoud. It’s amazing how a simple meal can evoke such strong memories and feelings of warmth.

Soaking in Geothermal Bliss

With my belly full and my spirit rejuvenated, it was time to experience the renowned Geosea - Geothermal Sea Baths. Located on a cliff overlooking the Skjálfandi Bay, the views were simply breathtaking. The mineral-rich seawater, heated to a soothing 38-39°C, was the perfect remedy for my travel-weary muscles. I soaked in the warm water, gazing out at the snow-capped mountains and the vast expanse of the ocean. Some say that you might spot whales while relaxing in the geothermal pools.
The Geosea baths boast incredible visual elements. The infinity pools offer a remarkable view of Skjálfandi Bay. The design is modern yet functional, with clean, minimalist architecture that complements the natural surroundings. The efficient wristband system made it easy to access the lockers and purchase drinks at the swim-up bar. Sipping on a local Icelandic beer while soaking in the geothermal waters was the ultimate relaxation experience. I even struck up a conversation with a friendly local who shared some interesting stories about the town's history and folklore. It’s moments like these that make traveling so enriching. Geosea offers heated saltwater pools with varying temperatures.

Evening Indulgence

As the sun began to set, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange and pink, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Röff bistro. Known for its fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, the bistro offered a delightful array of dishes. I opted for the fish and chips, a classic comfort food with an Icelandic twist. The service was quick and kind, and the cozy ambiance made it a perfect spot to unwind after a long day. Röff Bistro is known for serving fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. To cap off the evening, I made my way to the Geosea Bar. Perched on the coastline, the bar offered panoramic views of the North Atlantic Ocean. I enjoyed a glass of Icelandic Brennivín, a local spirit, while reflecting on the incredible day I had. The relaxed vibe and friendly atmosphere made it easy to strike up conversations with fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter. With its picturesque backdrop and vibrant atmosphere, Geosea Bar is more than just a place to grab a drink.
