A Day of Golden Visions and Tranquil Stones

Kyoto, on our first day, truly felt like stepping into a postcard. The blend of ancient history and serene beauty was captivating, a perfect start to our cultural immersion. Lena and I were eager to explore the iconic landmarks and savor the culinary delights that Kyoto had to offer, and today did not disappoint.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta. I opted for their signature tonkatsu, a breaded pork cutlet, while Lena chose a lighter, vegetable-based option. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and wonderfully tender inside. I especially enjoyed grinding my own sesame seeds to create the dipping sauce, adding a personal touch to the meal. Lena appreciated the fresh, local ingredients, commenting on the quality of the miso soup and the crispness of the cabbage salad. It was the ideal way to fuel up for a day of sightseeing.

With our bellies full, we headed to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. The temple shimmered in the morning light, its reflection dancing on the surface of the pond. The sight was truly breathtaking. I tried to capture the perfect photo, wanting to preserve the moment, while Lena simply stood in awe, soaking in the tranquility of the scene. The intricate details of the temple, adorned with gold leaf, were mesmerizing. We took our time wandering around the grounds, admiring the meticulously manicured gardens and the serene atmosphere.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest moments.

Next on our list was Ryoan-ji, famous for its enigmatic Zen garden. The garden consists of fifteen rocks arranged on a bed of white gravel, and it's said that no matter where you stand, you can never see all fifteen rocks at once. I found myself pondering the meaning behind the arrangement, while Lena, ever the architect, was fascinated by the garden's minimalist design and the way it evoked a sense of calm and contemplation. We sat in silence for a while, each lost in our own thoughts, before exploring the rest of the temple grounds, which included a beautiful stroll garden with a serene pond.

For lunch, we indulged in a Kobe beef steak at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. This was a culinary experience like no other. The chef prepared the steak teppanyaki-style right in front of us, showcasing his skill and precision. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, practically melting in our mouths. Lena and I savored every bite, agreeing that it was one of the best steaks we had ever tasted. The restaurant itself was elegant and refined, with a modern aesthetic that complemented the traditional flavors of the cuisine.

After lunch, we spent some time browsing the Kyoto Crafts Store. I was on the lookout for a unique souvenir to bring back to Berlin, while Lena was interested in finding inspiration for her architectural designs. The store was filled with beautiful handcrafted items, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles. I finally settled on a small, hand-painted sake set, while Lena purchased a book on traditional Japanese architecture.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kikunoi Roan for dinner. This two-Michelin-starred restaurant offered a modern take on traditional Kyoto cuisine. The meal was a multi-course kaiseki experience, with each dish carefully crafted to showcase the flavors of the season. We sampled a variety of delicacies, from sashimi and grilled fish to tempura and simmered vegetables. The presentation was exquisite, each plate a work of art. Lena and I were both impressed by the chef's creativity and attention to detail.

One dish that stood out was the smoked cherry trout, adorned with a cherry blossom. The smoky flavor of the trout was perfectly balanced by the delicate floral aroma of the cherry blossom. Another highlight was the lily root soup, which had a creamy texture and a subtle, earthy flavor. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, explaining each dish in detail and ensuring that we had a memorable dining experience.

The day ended with us reflecting on the incredible experiences we had. From the shimmering gold of Kinkaku-ji to the tranquil stones of Ryoan-ji, Kyoto had already cast its spell on us. The exquisite meals we enjoyed throughout the day only added to the magic. As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, Lena and I were filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement for the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates and the serene To-ji Temple. I'm particularly excited about trying the local cuisine at Arash's Kitchen for lunch and experiencing the unique ambiance of L'Escamoteur bar in the evening. It's shaping up to be another day of exploration and cultural immersion, and I can't wait to share it with you all.

Kyoto in February is proving to be a truly special experience, offering a unique blend of tranquility and cultural richness. Despite nearly forgetting my umbrella, the weather has been kind, and the atmosphere has been nothing short of magical. I feel incredibly fortunate to be sharing this journey with Lena, whose insights and enthusiasm make every moment even more meaningful. I am also starting to get inspired to try to cook some Japanese dishes when we get back to Berlin.
