Whispers of Ancient Kyoto

Today was a deep dive into the spiritual heart of Kyoto, a day where the ancient and the serene intertwined to create an unforgettable experience. From the thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up a mountainside to the quiet contemplation within a historic temple, Kyoto revealed its soul in ways I hadn't anticipated. It was a day of vibrant colors, hushed whispers, and a profound sense of connection to the past.

Our day began early, fueled by a traditional Japanese breakfast at Gion Nanba. I must say, finding this gem was an adventure in itself. Tucked away in a narrow alley near Yasaka Shrine, it felt like discovering a secret. The restaurant was small, intimate, with only a few counter seats, allowing for a personal connection with the chefs. Lena and I were seated at the counter, watching in fascination as the chefs prepared our meal with meticulous care. The breakfast was a delightful introduction to kaiseki cuisine – a multi-course set menu of small, artfully arranged dishes. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, from the delicate dashi jelly with shrimp to the savory grilled fish. It was a perfect start to a day dedicated to exploring Kyoto's cultural treasures.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off for Fushimi Inari Taisha. The train ride was an experience in itself, a chance to observe the daily lives of Kyoto residents. I couldn't help but notice the impeccable manners and quiet dignity of the people around us. It's a cultural trait I deeply admire and something I wish we could emulate more in Berlin. Arriving at Inari Station, we were immediately greeted by the iconic vermilion color that defines Fushimi Inari. The entrance to the shrine is just a short walk from the station, and as we approached, the sight of the thousands of torii gates stretching up the mountainside took my breath away.

The atmosphere was electric, a mix of reverence and excitement. Despite the February chill, the air was buzzing with energy as visitors from all over the world came to experience this unique place. Lena and I joined the throng, passing under the first of the torii gates and beginning our ascent. Each gate is a donation from a company or individual, their names inscribed on the pillars. It's a tangible representation of faith and gratitude, a testament to the enduring power of Inari, the god of rice, prosperity, and business success.

The path through the seemingly endless tunnel of torii gates is more than just a walk; it's a journey through faith, history, and the vibrant spirit of Japan.

As we climbed higher, the crowds began to thin, and the experience became more serene. The sunlight filtering through the gates created a magical effect, casting shadows that danced along the path. We paused frequently to admire the views, to catch our breath, and to simply soak in the atmosphere. The higher we climbed, the more we were rewarded with stunning vistas of Kyoto sprawling below us. The city looked like a miniature landscape, a testament to the blend of ancient traditions and modern life that defines Kyoto.

I found myself reflecting on the significance of vermilion, the color that dominates Fushimi Inari. I learned that it's considered an amulet against evil forces, a color that expresses bountiful harvests. It's a color that resonates deeply with me, perhaps because it reminds me of the vibrant colors of Foumban, my hometown in Cameroon. The artistry, culture, and vibrant colours are all things that I hold close to my heart.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Arash's Kitchen for lunch. Finding a Persian and Indian restaurant in Kyoto was unexpected, but the reviews were too good to resist. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, filled with the aroma of spices that transported me back to the familiar tastes of home. We ordered a mix of Persian and Indian dishes, savoring each bite. The flavors were authentic and comforting, a welcome change from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been enjoying. It was a reminder that Kyoto, like Berlin, is a city of diverse cultures and culinary experiences.

Our next stop was To-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to Kyoto's tallest pagoda. In contrast to the vibrant energy of Fushimi Inari, To-ji exuded a sense of tranquility and peace. The temple grounds were meticulously maintained, with beautiful gardens and ancient buildings that whispered stories of centuries past. The five-story pagoda was particularly impressive, a towering structure that seemed to reach for the sky.

We spent some time wandering through the gardens, admiring the serene beauty of the landscape. The temple complex also hosts a special opening of the pagoda during this time of year. It wasn't normally possible to enter the beautiful pagoda, but we could enter the first floor to examine some of the fine Buddhist images contained therein. The intricate details and the sheer scale of the structure were awe-inspiring. It was a reminder of the rich history and artistic heritage of Kyoto, a city that has been a center of culture and religion for centuries. It was a truly special experience, made even more poignant by the quiet atmosphere and the sense of reverence that permeated the air.

As evening approached, we made our way to Jiki Miyazawa for dinner, a Michelin-starred kappo restaurant that promised an unforgettable culinary experience. Kappo is a traditional counter-style Japanese restaurant where the chef prepares the food right in front of the guests. The restaurant was small and intimate, with only a few seats at the counter, allowing for a personal connection with the chef. We opted for the chef's tasting menu, a multi-course journey through the flavors of Kyoto. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef used seasonal ingredients to create innovative and surprising combinations, showcasing the best of Japanese cuisine. The grilled sesame tofu was a standout, a signature dish that took three years to perfect. The sake pairings were also exceptional, enhancing the flavors of each dish and adding to the overall experience.

After such a culturally rich day, Lena and I decided to wind down with a nightcap at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its creative cocktails and magical atmosphere. The bar was small and dimly lit, with a Harry Potter-esque vibe that immediately captivated us. The bartenders were true mixologists, creating concoctions that were as visually stunning as they were delicious. I ordered a Smoky Old Fashioned, while Lena opted for a Yuzu Gimlet. Both drinks were expertly crafted and presented with flair. The bar was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a place where we could relax, unwind, and reflect on the incredible experiences we had shared.
