Exploring the Art Haven of Naoshima
Day 9: Delving into the Soul of Art: A Day of Discovery in Naoshima
Explore Naoshima's Art House Project and Shipyard Works, blending art, culture, and serene moments in a captivating Japanese island escape.
Whispers of the Past, Visions of the Future
Today, Lena and I continued our artistic pilgrimage through Naoshima, and it felt like we were peeling back layers of time and creativity. It's amazing how art can transform spaces and perceptions, and Naoshima is a masterclass in this very phenomenon. Today was all about experiencing art that blurs the lines between the past and the present, inviting us to reflect on the stories embedded within the island’s landscape.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. I opted for the Naoshima Burger, a local fish burger, which was absolutely delicious. Lena chose a lighter option, a fresh salad, which she enjoyed immensely. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Art House Project, starting with Haisha.

Haisha, once a dentist's home and office, is now an extraordinary art installation by Shinro Ohtake. From the outside, it's a chaotic collage of rusted tin sheets, wooden panels, and old signboards. It felt like stepping into a living, breathing scrapbook. Inside, the most striking feature was the Statue of Liberty, standing incongruously yet perfectly in this surreal space. The blend of different materials and eras created a unique atmosphere, making me think about the layers of history and memory that exist within a single place.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Lena was particularly fascinated by the traces of the former dental clinic, which Ohtake preserved in his installation. It's like the building itself is telling a story, she said, running her hand along a weathered wall. I couldn't agree more. It's these kinds of details that make Naoshima so special – the way the artists incorporate the island's history into their work.
Next on our list was the Shipyard Works, another creation by Shinro Ohtake. This installation, located near the sea, repurposes elements of the shipyard into striking works of art. The dramatic structures against the backdrop of the sea and sky were perfect for photography, and I spent a good amount of time trying to capture the essence of the place. Lena, ever the architect, was intrigued by the way Ohtake transformed industrial materials into something beautiful and thought-provoking. It was a testament to the transformative power of art, turning what was once functional into something deeply meaningful.

For lunch, we decided to try Tee's DELI GROCERY. This funky little spot offered a small menu, and we both opted for the falafel sandwiches. They were absolutely delicious, and the laid-back atmosphere was perfect for a midday break. I chatted with the owner for a bit, who was happy to share some local tips and stories about the island. It's these kinds of interactions that make traveling so rewarding, connecting with people and learning about their lives and experiences.

After lunch, we decided to take a break from the art and enjoy a cup of tea. We found a small café, where we savored some traditional Japanese tea. The quiet moment allowed us to reflect on everything we had seen and experienced so far. It was a simple pleasure, but it was exactly what we needed to recharge before continuing our exploration.

In the evening, we had dinner at the Terrace Restaurant. The large windows offered stunning views of the Inland Sea, and the French cuisine was a delightful change of pace. I enjoyed a beautifully prepared seafood dish, while Lena savored a vegetarian option. The meal was a perfect end to a day filled with art and discovery.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we stopped by One Rest, a small bar, for a nightcap. It was a cozy place, and we enjoyed chatting with the bartender and a few locals. I tried some Japanese whiskey, while Lena had a glass of wine. It was a relaxing way to end the day, reflecting on all the incredible art we had seen and the wonderful experiences we had shared.

As I write this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow. We plan to visit Kasaneiwa and Tsunosaki, and then explore the Honmura Lounge & Archive. It's hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end. This journey to Naoshima has been more than just a vacation; it's been an immersion into a world where art and life intertwine, where creativity knows no bounds, and where every corner holds a new surprise. I'm grateful for the experiences we've had and the memories we've made. I also realize that I forgot my Japanese phrasebook, which would have helped me to better connect with the locals.
Good night from Naoshima!
P.S. I am thinking of designing an app that helps travelers discover hidden gems and connect with locals. Perhaps Naoshima will be the pilot location for this project!
P.P.S. I wish I had packed my sunglasses. The Japanese sun can be quite bright, especially when reflecting off the art installations.
P.P.P.S. I wonder if there are any tea ceremonies on Naoshima. That would be an interesting experience to explore. I'll have to research that for our next visit.
Tomorrow marks our final day on Naoshima, and while I am sad to leave this artistic haven, I am also excited to see what other treasures the island holds. We plan to start our day with breakfast at Café Ippo before heading to Kasaneiwa and Tsunosaki. Lena is particularly excited about visiting the Honmura Lounge & Archive, and I am keen to see what unique souvenirs we can find at Naoshima Shop Umihotaru before we depart. It feels like there is still so much to discover here.
As we prepare to leave this enchanting island, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we have shared. Naoshima has not only enriched our understanding of art but also deepened our appreciation for the beauty of simplicity and the power of community. I hope that our journey inspires you to seek out your own artistic adventures and to find inspiration in the most unexpected places.
